Honors Theses
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, “of the 281 million people aged 5 and over in the United States, 55.4 million people (20 percent of this population) speak a language other than English at home” (Center for Applied Linguistics). As this number of English language learners, also known as ELLs, continues to grow, families and educators alike are looking for effective programs and instructional strategies to serve these children and adults (CAL). “Dual-language education” is an umbrella term used for an additive form of education in which students are taught literacy and other content (reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social …

Reproduction Of An Original Edith Head Design, Rebekah Jackson, Dr. Mary Farahnakian
Reproduction Of An Original Edith Head Design, Rebekah Jackson, Dr. Mary Farahnakian
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project has been an involved approach to studying the history of costume design both through conventional research and the more tactile, construction process. While Edith Head is a renowned costume designer with many books and articles on her life work, less has been done to understand how her designs functioned and evolved from idea to costume. This process is essential to understanding her career’s success and is exactly what my project is meant to explore. Studying how her design for The Great Race (1965) was changed from concept to construction gives valuable insight to how Head thought as a …

Creating Virginia’S War Memorial Carillon In The Shadow Of The Civil War, Witek Jessica Lambertz
Creating Virginia’S War Memorial Carillon In The Shadow Of The Civil War, Witek Jessica Lambertz
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the creation of the Virginia’s War Memorial Carillon in relation to the persistent significance of the Civil War in Virginia. By focusing on the debates about Virginia’s War Memorial Library, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and Carillon, this thesis reconstructs the sentiments and historical legacy that shaped the multitude of decisions leading to the creation of Virginia’s World War memorial. Virginia seriously considered two other proposals for war memorials—the War Memorial Library and the Virginia Tomb of the Unknown Soldier—before ultimately constructing the War Memorial Carillon. Concerns for appropriateness and residual attachments to the Lost Cause of …

SURGE
Most people can recall their first crush. They think fondly back to age ten or eleven when they first “went boy-crazy” or couldn’t focus on sixth-grade English because that cute girl was in their class.
This did not happen for me. I do, however, vividly remember it happening for everyone around me. [excerpt]

Martial Arts In Modern Dance, Kaitlin Fayles, Dr. Jiamin Huang

The purpose of my ORCA project was to learn the history and basic techniques of Chinese martial arts and incorporate these movements into a modern dance piece that I, as a dance major (and martial arts student), would choreograph for my senior project.
Modern Method For Guitar, Brady Bills, Dr. Larry Green
Modern Method For Guitar, Brady Bills, Dr. Larry Green
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Over the last semester and summer I have been developing a modern guitar method book. I have been consulting with Larry Green (my faculty mentor) as well as reading many different guitar method books. I came to find that the reason why many of the method books were failing was due to a lack of attractive content and a early focus on chords rather than single notes. I developed my method based upon single notes then progessively moving into small chords (2 or 3 notes only) and gradually move into full chords (4,5 and 6 notes).
