Roosevelt, Boy Scouts, And The Formation Of Muscular Christian Character, Gordon J. Christen
Roosevelt, Boy Scouts, And The Formation Of Muscular Christian Character, Gordon J. Christen
Religious Studies Honors Projects
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, many prominent Christians and political leaders saw a degenerative influence in industrializing America. For them, urban culture had eroded gender roles, personal strength, and moral fiber. So-called “Muscular Christians” prescribed physical exertion and wilderness experience to cure these ills. I argue that these values were embodied in idealized characters such as Theodore Roosevelt, Jesus, and the Boy Scout to give a form to cultural remedies. In the process, they became the terms upon which proper Americanism, and proper Christianity, were constructed.

A Biography Of Inez Knight Allen: The First Single Proselytizing Sister Missionary For The Lds Church, Amy Connelly, Dr. Rachel Cope
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Inez Knight Allen, the daughter of Amanda and Jesse Knight, was born on September 8, 1876, on the Knight Family ranch just outside of Payson, Utah. Inez received a formal education at Brigham Young Academy. Originally intending to go on a study abroad to Europe, Inez instead received the unexpected call to be a proselytizing sister missionary for the Church in England. Inez served from 1898-1899. Through this mission service, Inez represents the broader context of Mormonism as a sister missionary in Great Britain during the 19th Century. She serves as a representative of the shifting of the Latter-day Saint …

“Mary Is Now To Be The Sower”: The Rebellious Proselytizing In Mary Sturlaugson’S Memoirs, Jennifer Duqué, Dr. Rachel Cope
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My project focuses on Mary Sturlaugson’s memoirs, and discusses how the memoir genre allowed Sturlaugson to both faithfully and subversively voice her position on the LDS Church’s denial of salvational ordinances to Black people. The ORCA grant has generously subsidized my research, providing the financial assistance that allowed me to focus on my project during my last year at BYU. My mentor, Dr. Rachel Cope, and I have carefully inspected Sturlaugson’s memoirs and historically contextualized them using primary sources and existing literature regarding Black Mormon history. I anticipate submitting the manuscript to A|B: Autobiography Studies, the Journal of Mormon History, …

Poets Don't Ride Motorcycles, Andrew G. Tully
Poets Don't Ride Motorcycles, Andrew G. Tully
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This is a collection of poems that focus more on minutia and happenstance than larger universal themes. Using free-form lines and stanzas, spare construction, and dark yet powerful imagery, these poems remind readers of the meaningful emotional impact everyday items and interactions can have. The extraordinary and unusual are important too, and form a stark contrast to the poems about the mundane. These poems are not meant to be a final collection, but are a solid base for a book-length manuscript that will expand on the themes, images, and stories contained in this thesis.

This is an assignment toward the end of the semester of our study of the literature of Genocide. We have raced through the Holocaust, addressing Mary Berg's diary of her life in the Warsaw Ghetto and the Vittel internment camp, and then have moved on to address genocide in Cambodia and Rwanda. The films I have asked students to see are NOT linked here.
Interpreting Invisibility: In Defense Of Regan, Brittany Ginder
Interpreting Invisibility: In Defense Of Regan, Brittany Ginder
Theses and Dissertations
Most scholarship regarding Shakespeare’s King Lear rests on the analysis of Lear and Cordelia, with the odd reference to the eldest daughter, Goneril, and brief homages to the Gloucester subplot. Lear’s middle daughter, Regan, is rarely mentioned at all, unless it is in conjunction with one of her more scholastically popular sisters. Within these marginalized moments of notice, Regan is routinely simplified as being just another sinful sister, fitting nicely into the accepted binaries of good and evil outlined within the play. Despite the fact that most binaries, like characters, are flawed, Regan has been given little to no chance …

Much More Than Longing: Nostalgia For Fin De Siècle Vienna, Dana Hicks
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
While much is known about Fin de Siècle Vienna, there has been little study of how it is understood in memory. Up to this point nostalgia for Fin de Siècle Vienna is almost entirely built from the experiences of the male Jewish intellectual. This memory is superimposed on all people who lived in Fin de Siècle Vienna. However other strains go unconsidered, such as from the arts of the age evoking wonder. There is also nostalgia from academics who interpret Fin de Siècle Vienna as a primordial ground for modernity. There is more to this past in memory than meets …

Eight Figurines From Fag El-Gamous, Egypt Interpreting Style And Function In Relation To The Culture Of The Graeco-Roman Fayoum, Aubrye Young, Dr. David Whitchurch
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Ongoing archaeological evidence provides scholars new opportunities to glean information to better understand the history of Roman Egypt. In 1981, Brigham Young University began excavating a site in Egypt locally referred to as Fag el-Gamous (“Way of the Water Buffalo”) which, to date, has resulted in the exhumation of hundreds of mummies. Artifacts collected with these burials provide a unique opportunity to examine firsthand these artifacts within the cultural context of Roman Egypt.

Prophetic Harmony: Bringing Together The Disparate Voices Of Isaiah, David B. Ridge, Dr. Shon Hopkin
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the academic year 2012–2013 I received an ORCA Grant from BYU. Under the mentorship of Dr. Shon Hopkin of the Department of Ancient Scripture, I began working on a project to create a textual harmony of four different versions of the Book of Isaiah; the King James Version, the Joseph Smith Translation, the Isaiah chapters in the Book of Mormon, and the various manuscripts of Isaiah among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Our intention was to create a manuscript of this textual harmony suitable for publication as a textbook for classes on the Book of Isaiah.

The Construction Of Female Identity In Mughal Painting: Portraits Of Women From The Shah Jahan Period (Ca. 1628-1658), Leila Prasertwaitaya
Theses and Dissertations
Paintings of women as individual subjects were a popular theme in the Mughal court during the mid-seventeenth century, or the Shah Jahan period (ca. 1628-1658). These portraits depict idealized archetypes with subtle differences in facial and bodily features. The same portrait conventions were used for both historical and imaginary women. This thesis has three aims: (1) identify and explain the significance of three elements that visually represent an ideal Mughal woman using a case study from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts called Page from the Nasir al-Din Shah Album: Portrait of a Mughal Woman (ca. 1630-45), (2) combine visual …

THE STORY OF DON RABBIT AND SEXY CARROT
FOR VARIETY ORCHESTRA
Lisa M. Eleazarian
58 Pages May 2014
This thesis project follows the form and model of a tone poem using a compositional style of cartoon music.
The piece acts as a musical representation of a cartoon, in which a rabbit falls in love with a carrot, chases the carrot, and finally catches the carrot only to eat it and die at the end of his meal. The plot line fits well into sonata form, a common western classical music form. The piece is divided into three movements based on …

The U.S. Department Of State Office Of Faith-Based And Community Initiatives: What Does The U.S. Engage When They Engage `Religion'?, Belgica Marisol Cucalon
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In August of 2013 the U.S. State Department launched the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives with the objective to foster and promote religious engagements in foreign diplomacy. The language used by the architects and proponents of the initiative suggests that even though religion can be a source of great conflict, religion is also a powerful force for good capable of mitigating conflict and fostering progress. The present optimistic belief of American foreign diplomats that religious engagement will foster beneficial partnerships capable of advancing U.S. foreign interests has led scholars to pose the question, "what will the U.S. engage when …
