Oral Interviews For Testing In The High-School Spanish Classroom, John C. Akers, Casey Calvert, Kalle Davis Apr 2014

Oral Interviews For Testing In The High-School Spanish Classroom, John C. Akers, Casey Calvert, Kalle Davis

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

Our project offers strategies and materials for the beginning Spanish classroom to increase oral proficiency of students through an emphasis on individual and small-group interviews with the teacher, which will be an integral part to every classroom test. These interviews will be referred to also as “One-On-One orals,” “OOOs,” or simply “encounters,” inspired by the oral proficiency interviews (OPIs) first developed in the 1980s to measure speaker competence in a second language--as per the proficiency guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). (Our project’s classroom materials begin on page 5.)

As we know today, the …

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

The focus of this project is to improve oral and written proficiency and enhance cultural awareness of students enrolled in Spanish III Honors. Students will be assessed at the beginning of the project in October and again in March through taped …

Teaching To The Test: De/Reconstructing The Argument, Natalie S. Grinnell, Caley Rogers, Adam Christenson Apr 2014

Teaching To The Test: De/Reconstructing The Argument, Natalie S. Grinnell, Caley Rogers, Adam Christenson

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

With the implementation of the Common Core Standards, the new Common Core test will start in Spring of 2015. This standardized test is given during the spring of a student’s junior year. Though the test is given junior year, the onus for making sure students are ready is also that of teachers working with freshmen and sophomores. Preparing students to be proficient in the skills necessary for college and potential careers is paramount; one way to ensure such preparation is creating exercises similar to that of the performance task on the sample test. The performance task focuses on assessing a …

Never Myles From The News: The 'Meta-Journalism' Of Myles Na Gcopaleen, Ian Kilroy Apr 2014

Never Myles From The News: The 'Meta-Journalism' Of Myles Na Gcopaleen, Ian Kilroy

Books/Book chapters

This chapter will interrogate and assess the substantial body of journalistic work of Irish novelist Brian O’Nolan, considered to be one of the founding fathers of the postmodern novel, as exemplified in his classic works At-Swim-Two-Birds and The Third Policeman. Locating his satirical journalism in the context of the Swiftian tradition from which it stems, O’Nolan’s journalism will be read in the societal content in which it was produced: namely 1940s, 1950s and 1960s Ireland, decades in which the country was marked by widespread censorship, increased Church influence on the affairs of state, economic stagnation and sexual repression.

Concentrating …

Stop The Silence, Victoria J. Reynolds Apr 2014

Stop The Silence, Victoria J. Reynolds

SURGE

I am tired of the numbers. The statistics. We all know them. One out of every six women are the victims of sexual assault. One out of thirty-three men are victims of sexual assault. Forty-four percent of victims are under the age of eighteen at the time of their assault. The transgender and queer communities are three times as likely to be targeted for sexual assault. But numbers don’t carry meaning, the don’t carry identity, and they (very quickly) lose their weight and are forgotten. Names mean much more. Stories make an impact.

Bakhtin’S Carnivalesque: A Gauge Of Dialogism In Soviet And Post-Soviet Cinema, Randy Davis

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines fifteen films produced in seven political eras from 1926 thru 2008 in Soviet / Post-Soviet Russia. Its aim is to determine if the cinematic presence of Bakhtin’s ten signifiers of the carnivalesque (parody, death, grotesque display, satirical humor, billingsgate, metaphor, fearlessness, madness, the mask, and the interior infinite) increase in their significance with the historical progression from a totalitarian State (e.g., USSR under Stalin) to a federal semi-residential constitutional republic (e.g., The Russian Federation under Yeltsin - Putin). In this study, the carnivalesque signifiers act as a gauge of dialogism, the presence of which is indicative of …

The Moral Panic About The Socializing Of Young People In Minangkabau, Lyn Parker Apr 2014

The Moral Panic About The Socializing Of Young People In Minangkabau, Lyn Parker

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper analyses the discourse surrounding the perceived threat of free seks and pergaulan bebas (free socializing) to the moral health of young Minangkabau people, and in particular, young women, in West Sumatra. It uses the sociological frame of "moral panic" to examine contemporary discussions about globalization and the influence of "the West" in West Sumatra. The paper examines the way in which "the authorities" in West Sumatra (media, such as teen magazines and newspapers, academics, government and law, teachers, and community leaders) present the threat, and the way in which young people, who are the target of the moral …

Early Marriage, Adolescent Motherhood, And Reproductive Rights For Young Sasak Mothers In Lombok, Linda Rae Bennett Apr 2014

Early Marriage, Adolescent Motherhood, And Reproductive Rights For Young Sasak Mothers In Lombok, Linda Rae Bennett

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article focuses on Indonesian adolescents who are wives and mothers, demonstrating how early marriage and adolescent motherhood are normative among women from poor Sasak communities in Western Lombok. It is based on ethnographic research with 28 young mothers that included focus group discussions, in depth interviews, and observations. Demographic and ethnographic data on the aetiology of early marriage and adolescent motherhood are discussed, and confirm that low educational attainment for girls, lack of employment prospects, poverty, and low levels of economic development are all associated with a higher probability of adolescent marriage and motherhood in Indonesia. The article also …

Through analytical reading, the readers will find that historians paid attention to three issues: the relationship between …

Lynn Riggs: Forgotten Genius, Jason Michael Apr 2014

Lynn Riggs: Forgotten Genius, Jason Michael

Theses and Dissertations

Lynn Riggs was an early to mid-20th century Native American playwright who wrote twenty-four full length plays, his sole enduring success being Green Grow the Lilacs, the play upon which the musical Oklahoma! is based. For much of the early part of Riggs’s career, he was considered a uniquely pioneering and promising playwright, cited in competition with Eugene O’Neill as vying for the position of best playwright of their age. But while O’Neill has gone on to be considered America’s Greatest Playwright, the life and works of Lynn Riggs, save for his contribution to Rodgers and Hammerstein, have gone largely …

Queeranimal Imaginary: An Intra-Active Investigation Of Ecology, Performance, And Sound, Caryn Brissey Apr 2014

Queeranimal Imaginary: An Intra-Active Investigation Of Ecology, Performance, And Sound, Caryn Brissey

Theses and Dissertations

Through interrelated experiments in writing, video, sound, and movement, this research investigates the intersections of intimacy, ecology, and performance. Integrating an autoethnographic approach to gender and sexuality with creative practice and theoretical inquiry, this layered investigation offers implications that are both deeply personal and widely accessible. I am using my own experiences growing up as a queer child to generative corporeal and experience-based material, while also incorporating the ideas of current queer and gender theorists to frame my own research within the larger context of feminist studies. This research culminated into an evening length performance at Dogtown Dance Theatre on …

Theses and Dissertations

In 1902, Larz Anderson III, a Washington diplomat, and his wife, Isabel Weld Perkins Anderson, a Boston author, commissioned the Boston architects Arthur Little and Herbert W. C. Browne to design their winter residence in the District of Columbia. Completed in 1905, this Beaux-Arts mansion now serves as an historic house museum and as the national headquarters for the Society of the Cincinnati, a patriotic organization established by Revolutionary War officers in 1783. Larz Anderson was a member and a descendant of one of the founders of the Society. The fact that Anderson House was designated a national historic landmark …

Youth Culture And Islam In Indonesia, Pam Nilan, Michelle Mansfield Apr 2014

Youth Culture And Islam In Indonesia, Pam Nilan, Michelle Mansfield

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Indonesian youth culture is sometimes depicted through a moral panic discourse about mixed sex socializing. In this article, the authors challenge that view by presenting some ethnographic material on young Muslim Indonesians of both sexes socialising in an internet caf and gathering during Ramadhan in a mall in Solo, Central Java. Young Indonesians enact everyday youth culture through the negotiation of space, time, and technology within the strong discourse of moral propriety and gender separation advised by contemporary Islam. The intense social bonding between same sex age peers provides security and reassurance for young men and women in the transition …

Information is derived from discussions and personal contact with different groups of youth and parents (adults with children) in Jakarta; literature review, observations, as well as from flashbacks given by the adults, providing a portrait of anak Jakarta since late 1980's. Let's Judge A Magazine By Its Cover; A Textual Analysis Of The Covers Of Gadis, Suzie Handajani Apr 2014

Let's Judge A Magazine By Its Cover; A Textual Analysis Of The Covers Of Gadis, Suzie Handajani

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In this article, I analyse the covers of Gadis, a magazine for Indonesian teenage girls, from 2009 to 2013. Using textual analysis, I examine these magazine covers as manifestations of local gender ideology amidst pressures from a globalized market. The models on the magazine covers are the embodiment of ideal teenagers and they reflect the magazine's personification of Indonesian adolescents. Images of the models in conjunction with the article titles displayed on the covers construct dominant themes surrounding the lives of female adolescents. In this article, I argue that the dominant gender ideology is perpetuated by the magazine; however, the …

Youth Culture And Urban Pride; The Sociolinguistics Of East Javanese Slang, Tom G. Hoogervorst Apr 2014

Youth Culture And Urban Pride; The Sociolinguistics Of East Javanese Slang, Tom G. Hoogervorst

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This study offers an overview of the characteristics and social functions of youth slang in the Indonesian province of East Java. It examines Boso Walikan and various types of Surabayan slang. Boso Walikan emerged in Malang as a secret language that was deliberately made unintelligible to outsiders. Over the decades, large parts of Malang's urban population developed proficiency in the language and appropriated it as an identity marker. The situation in nearby Surabaya is different. While lacking a uniform local slang comparable to that of Malang, several communities make an effort to differentiate themselves through specific linguistic habits, which are …
