The Forgotten Fruitway: Folk Perspectives On Fruit Farming On The Providence Bench, 1940-1980, Amy C. Maxwell
The Forgotten Fruitway: Folk Perspectives On Fruit Farming On The Providence Bench, 1940-1980, Amy C. Maxwell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As a whole, Cache Valley, Utah, residents have experienced dramatic changes in population size and economy over the last century. Providence, Utah, was once characterized by the farmers that worked the land surrounding it. The importance of agriculture has especially declined due to expanding urbanization. Despite these changes, Providence residents are aware of and celebrate their history. The purpose of this thesis is to add to the official account of local history. I attempt to capture a segment of the agricultural economy that often goes uncelebrated in current histories—fruit farming. Alongside the oft-cited sugar beet and pea production was a …
Feeling The Drive: The International Meridian Highway, Regional Boosters, And The Redefinition Of Space, 1911-1930, Amanda N. Johnson
Feeling The Drive: The International Meridian Highway, Regional Boosters, And The Redefinition Of Space, 1911-1930, Amanda N. Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis explores the origins of the International Meridian Highway, now U.S. Highway 81, from its naissance in 1911 until the late 1920s. In these two decades, regional boosters in the middle of the United States joined a national movement, the Good Roads Movement, to promote new, democratic understandings of space and geography. The boosters of the International Meridian Highway promoted their road as a “Main Street of North America,” centering the focus of both movement and activity through the middle of the United States. While these boosters were successful in developing and promoting their highway, ultimately they became victims …
Time, History, And Providence In The Philosophy Of Nicholas Of Cusa, Jason Aleksander
Time, History, And Providence In The Philosophy Of Nicholas Of Cusa, Jason Aleksander
Faculty Publications
Although Nicholas of Cusa occasionally discussed how the universe must be understood as the unfolding of the absolutely infinite in time, he left open questions about any distinction between natural time and historical time, how either notion of time might depend upon the nature of divine providence, and how his understanding of divine providence relates to other traditional philosophical views. From texts in which Cusanus discussed these questions, this paper will attempt to make explicit how Cusanus understood divine providence. The paper will also discuss how Nicholas of Cusa’s view of the question of providence might shed light on Renaissance …
Retrospective Writing, Melissa B. Cavaliero
Retrospective Writing, Melissa B. Cavaliero
Senior Honors Projects
The past four years I have devoted my studies to science and mathematics. While I have loved studying these subjects, I wanted to take the opportunity of the Senior Honors Project to explore a different field. I chose the field of writing. Being able to tell a story is one thing, but being able to tell a story well and in writing is another. The focus of my project is retrospective writing. The six written essays will be from the age of five when I entered first grade through my college years. A series of pictures will correlate with each …

The Sand In The Glass: A Journey Through The Writing Process, Cory Wentworth
Senior Honors Projects
“At one time I thought the most important thing was talent. I think now that — the young man or the young woman must possess or teach himself, train himself, in infinite patience, which is to try and to try and to try until it comes right.”
—William Faulkner on writing
Storytelling is one of the oldest traditions and forms of entertainment in the history of the human race. Whether through oral storytelling, wall paintings, or the written word, storytelling may be as old as language itself. I yearn to be a part of this history and to have my …
The Percussion Music Of Donald Martino, Glenn Webb
The Percussion Music Of Donald Martino, Glenn Webb
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Donald Martino (1931-2005) made important contributions to the percussion repertoire with his chamber music and solo percussion pieces spanning from the 1950s to his last compositions written just before his death in 2005. Many of his chamber music pieces include percussion, and are some of the most significant contributions to the contemporary chamber medium of the last half of the twentieth century. The compositions often include performance techniques that require additional instruction, or demonstration. Some of his chamber works such as Notturno and From the Other Side include several pages of notes, explanations, and instructions detailing notational devices such as …
Slavery, Sacred Texts, And The Antebellum Confrontation With History, Jordan Tuttle Watkins
Slavery, Sacred Texts, And The Antebellum Confrontation With History, Jordan Tuttle Watkins
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the first six decades of the nineteenth century, America's biblical and constitutional interpreters waged their hermeneutical battles on historical grounds. Biblical scholars across the antebellum religious spectrum, from orthodox Charles Hodge's Calvinism to heterodox Theodore Parker's Transcendentalism, began to emphasize contextual readings. This development, fueled by an exposure to German biblical criticism and its emphasis on historical exegesis, sparked debate about the pertinence of biblical texts and the permanence of their teachings. In the 1830s, the resurfacing slavery issue increased the urgency to explore the biblical past for answers, which exposed differences between ancient and American slavery. Some still …
The Influences Of The American Boxer Indemnity Reparations Remissions On Chinese Higher Education, Xiaojuan Zhou
The Influences Of The American Boxer Indemnity Reparations Remissions On Chinese Higher Education, Xiaojuan Zhou
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to consider the influences of the American Boxer Indemnity Reparations Remissions (ABIRR) on Chinese higher education. These remissions were used to establish two universities, to establish the American Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program (ABISP) to support Chinese students’ studying in America, and to support other higher education- related projects.
This study focused on higher education considering ABISP as an individual case. The ABISP students were selected from all the students who studied in America in the corresponding period in part because of the inconsistencies of research before 1949.
Through tracking 1,152 ABISP students of Type …
Jeanne D' Arc : La Sainte De La Patrie?, Nathalie Mahoney
Jeanne D' Arc : La Sainte De La Patrie?, Nathalie Mahoney
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This thesis concentrates on the use of Joan of Arc by various political groups during the period of 1870-1914, which marks the period of La Belle Époque. Nineteenthcentury France witnessed an acute anti-clerical campaign led by the Third Republic, which saw the French Church as a threat to the progress of its modernist ideas. The schism between the Republicans and the Catholics dates back to the French Revolution of 1789, when the Civil Constitution of the Clergy of 1790 placed the church under the control of the government. A de-Christianization process began, but was temporarily resolved with the signing of …

Threading Art: The Dynamics Of Costume Design And Costume Studies., Tavares De Melo Isabela Marchi
Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this research is to demonstrate the strong relationship between design and history in the process of studying and creating costumes for theatre. Costumes are considered an important area in the study of material culture, which has been given more visibility within academia. Over the past few decades, the number of museums and universities with collections dedicated exclusively to costumes and textiles has noticeably increased, recognizing them as works of art worthy of being preserved. Considering costumes’ ability to document time and space, and to visually tell stories, many theatre departments have implemented methods to organize their …

Mass Customization! An Approach Through Generative Design, Aamina Karim Malik
Mass Customization! An Approach Through Generative Design, Aamina Karim Malik
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract Historically, design has been associated with unique, handmade products and utilities; however, the advent of the Industrial Revolution introduced the system of mass-production, which generated a recurrent and ambivalent problem: the lack of customized products. Generative Design redresses this issue. This new design method is based on a system of rules, which produce a design that maintains individuality and character. Generative Design takes one away from natural elements and the distinct personalities of designs and products. Forming a design out of certain algorithms and sets of rules constricts it to artificiality and separates it from the natural. Hence, Generative …

Personified - Objects With Personalities That Illustrate Applied Empathy As A Mechanism To Document Qatar’S Changing Phenomena., Maryam Al-Homaid
Theses and Dissertations
In the past, a user’s interaction with objects was usually limited to a core function. Whereas today, there is a trend toward objects that can offer multi-layered experiences with the potential to not only serve a core function, but to communicate information and emotion. These interactions offer a give-and-take relationship between the user and the object, with the potential for characteristics, individualistic features, and even personalities to appear. Interactions with such objects provide the potential for empathic relationships to form between human and object. Empathy becomes the bond that gives a user the opportunity to view the world from the …
Hospital: A Creature Of Duality, Gordon Mccormick
Hospital: A Creature Of Duality, Gordon Mccormick
Theses and Dissertations
Hospitals can no longer be thought of as simply healing machines--they are healing organisms. It is Nature that permits every miracle of medicine, and it is Science that permits our understanding of medicine. By combining the two into a single idea, we aim to strike a balance between the duality of Nature and Technology, in order to design a space that relies more on the healing powers of Nature and less on the intrusiveness of Technology.
Handling The “Curation Crisis:” Database Management For Archaeological Collections, Karen Thomson
Handling The “Curation Crisis:” Database Management For Archaeological Collections, Karen Thomson
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Archaeological collecting practices have created a predicament for museums and archaeological repositories that today is commonly referred to as the “curation crisis.” As new excavations continue to be organized each year, accumulated collections find themselves haphazardly stored in museums with few plans for their long-term management, care and preservation. While the existence of a “curation crisis” has been widely accepted in the United States since the 1970s, there is little agreement as to a solution that can be accomplished in a practical, affordable, and effective manner. As a consequence, it may take a long time for the crisis to be …

Printing And Protestants: An Empirical Test Of The Role Of Printing In The Reformation, Jared Rubin
Printing And Protestants: An Empirical Test Of The Role Of Printing In The Reformation, Jared Rubin
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
The causes of the Protestant Reformation have long been debated. This paper seeks to revive and econometrically test the theory that the spread of the Reformation is linked to the spread of the printing press. I test this theory by analyzing data on the spread of the press and the Reformation at the city level. An econometric analysis that instruments for omitted variable bias with a city's distance from Mainz, the birthplace of printing, suggests that cities with at least one printing press by 1500 were at minimum 29 percentage points more likely to be Protestant by 1600.
The Feminization Of The Literary Voice And The Rhetorical Tradition In The Lais Of Marie De France, The Mirror Of Simple Souls, And The Book Of The City Of Ladies, Elisa B. Filippone
The Feminization Of The Literary Voice And The Rhetorical Tradition In The Lais Of Marie De France, The Mirror Of Simple Souls, And The Book Of The City Of Ladies, Elisa B. Filippone
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This study demonstrates how The Lais of Marie de France (12th c.) by Marie de France, The Mirror of Simple Souls (14th c.) by Marguerite Porete, and Christine de Pizan’s The Book of City of Ladies (15th c.) serve as the three progressive steps in the transformation of the rhetorical theory and the feminine literary voice, redefining woman from the idea of inferior entity written by men over centuries into the concept of an intellectual and virtuous female human being. The development of a strong feminine literary voice starts as de France feminizes the masculine language she borrows from masculine …
Tejanos And The Texas Revolution: Their Reaction To The Centralist Threat, Michael Marino
Tejanos And The Texas Revolution: Their Reaction To The Centralist Threat, Michael Marino
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The purpose of this study is to ascertain Tejanos’ reasons for rebelling against the Mexican government. Texas was first colonized by the Spanish in the sixteenth century. After the Mexican independence in 1821, Texas became a Mexican territory. Tejanos (Texas Mexicans) lived under Spanish rule and Mexican rule. México enacted a colonization program allowing Anglo immigrants to settle in Texas. Tejanos and Anglo colonists developed a mutual working relationship. This thesis will compare the Spanish and Mexican administrations and how they failed to support and protect Tejanos. This failure is one of the causes for their rebellion. Another cause is …

Creating Her Own Power: "Morte Darthur's" Morgan Le Fay, Cynthia A. Scott
Creating Her Own Power: "Morte Darthur's" Morgan Le Fay, Cynthia A. Scott
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Morgan le Fay is one of the most recognizable female characters in Thomas Malory’s Morte Darthur as she persistently creates conflict for King Arthur and his knights. While many scholars have focused on the idea of a subjugated female presence in Malory’s text, this paper addresses the power that Morgan displays and how it suggests underlying masculine anxieties existing in a patriarchy. Three specific components of Morgan’s power are discussed: her ability to reject and manipulate prescribed gender codes, her power of enchantment, and her disruption of homosocial bonds. The strategic combination of these three components allows Morgan to exhibit …

Transylvania, Texas, Joshua Murray
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This thesis is a collection of poems about my experience realizing that I was transgender, working through my feelings prior to this realization, the moment of realization, and the fallout that comes afterword. It begins by dealing with the feelings of depression and alienation that accompany unrecognized feelings of gender dysphoria, examining feelings of disconnect from the body, the mind, and everyday life. It builds to the slow realization of being a trans woman, a woman taught to be a man by society, and the joy and relief that comes with that epiphany. Finally it looks at what comes afterword, …
Manuel Guerra And The Politics Of Starr County, Texas 1880-1920, Jesus Perez
Manuel Guerra And The Politics Of Starr County, Texas 1880-1920, Jesus Perez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This study demonstrates the success of the Mexican American leadership of Starr County in maintaining their hold on power in defiance of Anglo American migrants in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. What aided Mexican American leadership in Starr County was that the major figure Manuel Guerra was highly educated, and his ancestors had settled the region as early 1767, which led many Mexican Americans both upper class and lower class to be loyal to him and those closely allied with him. The tactics used by Manuel Guerra and his allies were equal to the tactics used by political …

The story incorporates traditional Gothic and Southern Gothic influences described by Bailey, De Vore et al., Radcliffe, and others. The issue of format is analyzed using insights by Felicia Day, Syd Field, Tennessee Williams, and Robert McKee. The Web Series remains a pioneering medium. Shows such as The …

Posmodernismo E Identidad En La Narrativa De Juan Villoro, Jonathan Godinez Perez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
