A Case Study Of Perceived Self-Efficacy In Writing Center Peer Tutor Training, Shaun T. White May 2014

A Case Study Of Perceived Self-Efficacy In Writing Center Peer Tutor Training, Shaun T. White

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This explorative case study used mixed methods to examine and analyze the two following research questions using the psychological framework from Perceived Self-Efficacy Theory: 1) what variables of writing center tutor training affected the trainees’ perceived self-efficacy levels towards their work, and 2) what aspects of this training contributed to the attainment of persistence? Both questions were answered using quantitative and qualitative methods for analyses. The quantitative research revealed that the initial six week period of observation for peer tutors at the beginning of their training was highly beneficial for increasing their perceived self-efficacy levels in believing they could complete …

Behind His Father's Saying: Robert Frost's Wisdom Tradition, James H. Altman May 2014

Behind His Father's Saying: Robert Frost's Wisdom Tradition, James H. Altman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

It is no coincidence that Robert Frost draws on the European/American aphoristic wisdom tradition. From the fables of Aesop, to the esotericism of pre-Socratic Greek philosophers such as Pythagoras and Empedocles, to the works of moralists like Blaise Pascal and Michel De Montaigne, to Erasmus, Frederick Nietzsche and others, Robert Frost weaves diverse wisdom into his work. He does not, however, as much take verbatim the words or sentiments of those who inspire him. Rather he adapts the spirit of their thoughts for his own purposes. Why and how does he do this? What are those purposes, and their subsequent …

Takes Dying Animals, Brittany Leigh Bronson May 2014

Takes Dying Animals, Brittany Leigh Bronson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The following collection represents three years of creative work in the Masters of Fine Arts-Fiction program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The majority of these stories operate in the realm of the surreal with comic and farcical leanings. All of the characters portrayed deal with death in some way--whether it a parent, a marriage, an animal, or a friend--and each cope their loss by pushing grief to the periphery, often masking it with humor or denial, until the story requires them to consciously confront it. These stories should not be considered finished work, but as a summation of …

Walt Disney And The Propaganda Complex: Government Funded Animation And Hollywood Complicity During Wwii, Amanda Michelle Cunningham May 2014

Walt Disney And The Propaganda Complex: Government Funded Animation And Hollywood Complicity During Wwii, Amanda Michelle Cunningham

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The focus of this proposed thesis will be on the animated propaganda films the studios of Walt Disney produced for the government during World War II, analyzing three of the most widely viewed animated features: The New Spirit (1942), Der Fuehrer's Face (1943), and Education for Death: The Making of the Nazi (1943). These government-financed films were used to encourage Americans to pay their taxes; they generally depicted Germany as a threatening enemy and encouraged support for America's effort and involvement in the war. Using a semiotics theoretical approach, the thesis will analyze these films as propaganda to demonstrate how …

Morning's Porch, Colby Gillette May 2014

Morning's Porch, Colby Gillette

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Morning's Porch continues and follows the walking, waiting, watching that begins and ends off the page. It begins "underway," with two already on the road, and ends in an eye wanting light. In between, childhood, Easter, Winter, Spring, Venice, asphalt, Summer, Fall, sunsets, moorhens, grackles, billboards, dogwoods and cottonwoods walk along the poems. They walk through the poems as they continue to walk in the world. In a similar way, the poems of René Char, George Herbert, Paul Celan, Emily Dickinson, William Blake, Arthur Rimbaud, Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, William Carlos Williams and Pierre Reverdy walk through the pages of …

Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear, Jean Ho

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The short stories in this collection move between two women, Fiona and Jane, who were close friends as teenagers but drift apart in their twenties. The women find each other again, later in life, and ease into an unsettled truce. As a writer I am interested in questions of gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity; in these stories, I have tried to explore the intersections of these identities through Fiona and Jane's lives in Los Angeles and New York, and the histories of their families in Taiwan.

The Dakini Project, Kimberley Harris Idol May 2014

The Dakini Project, Kimberley Harris Idol

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation merges creative writing with scholarship using the novel, The Dakini Project, to provide the subject matter to which the criticism applies. It will focus on the source of mystery format as that codified by Edgar Allan Poe that is later taken in hand by his fellows Arthur Conan Doyle, Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett (as novelists), authors of the hard-boiled American style, and it will use Chaos theory to assess to idea of catastrophe in terms of emergence rather than disintegration. Though the format comes from American beginnings, the scope of the stories discussed here are tangled around …

All Is Ripe For Fire, Dana Marie Killmeyer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

All is Ripe for Fire is a two-part lyrical meditation that captures the world of the unnamed speaker who is visited by the image of a woman, such as the one who appears in the very first poem, "The Unnamed," which begins with an invitation to reader: "Let us look at the French woman's hand touching the flame to her sleeve." However, no sooner is the reader's attention drawn to the woman's hand, the flame, and then to her sleeve, than the image of the woman is gone entirely. In a matter of a few words, the figure of the …

Technical Theatre: Bridging The Gap Between Academic And Vocational Training While Preparing Students For Careers And Life, Megan Morey

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Most people do not realize that Technical Theatre even exists, and of those who do, not many realize the great potential that Technical Theatre programs have for reforming education. Through an examination of the basic history of education in the United States, as well as of the current trends in student preparation for careers and the workforce, it is clear that Technical Theatre offers an educational model that addresses many of the difficulties experienced in today's educational systems. By integrating the core subjects with hands-on learning, technical skills, 21st century soft skills, and both learner-centered and group-learning methodologies, Technical Theatre …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

My thesis is a collection of short stories titledBefore You Knew Me. The collection centers on people whose lives have been affected by addiction or loneliness. Families attempt to get through adversities and piece together the fragments of a life they once had. Happiness for both the adults and the children depends on their ability to resist the cycle of dysfunction and the pressures of their peers.

The collection begins with a Gothic story about an abduction. My story "Goldfish" was inspired by Joyce Carol Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been," where a young girl meets a …
