“A Crime Too Terrible For Contemplation:” Samuel Ralph Harlow And Missionary Influence On The History Of The Responsibility To Protect, Shelby Kendrick
“A Crime Too Terrible For Contemplation:” Samuel Ralph Harlow And Missionary Influence On The History Of The Responsibility To Protect, Shelby Kendrick
Senior Honors Theses
As a prominent and influential missionary in Turkey in the early 20th century, Samuel Ralph Harlow offers a new perspective that should be included in historical literature on foreign missionaries and human rights. Through his correspondence and academic works, Harlow’s story unveils internal conflict among United States officials and missionaries in regard to Turkish treatment of Greeks and Armenians in the interwar period. Samuel Ralph Harlow represents the position in support of American intervention to rescue Greeks and Armenians from massacre and deportation, but as his superiors’ views on the matter changed, Harlow was silenced. The U.S. may have decided …
Language, Technology And The “They Self”: How Linguistic Manipulation Of Mass And Social Media Distract From The Authentic Self, Edith M. Talley
Language, Technology And The “They Self”: How Linguistic Manipulation Of Mass And Social Media Distract From The Authentic Self, Edith M. Talley
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis examines German philosopher Martin Heidegger’s concepts of being and time, the role of language in being, and ways of authentic being through the lens of modern media practices in the Information Age. It relates Heidegger’s philosophy to the media ecology theory introduced by Marshall McLuhan in the 1960s by exploring McLuhan’s themes of tribal, typographical and electronic man. In addition, this thesis considers the role of mass media in information dissemination. The goal of this report is to explicate the shaping effects of mass media, especially social media, on individual perceptions and societal culture and identify ways in …
A Semantic Conception Of Truth, Jonathan Lumpkin
A Semantic Conception Of Truth, Jonathan Lumpkin
Senior Honors Theses
I explore three main points in Alfred Tarski’s Semantic Conception of Truth and the Foundation of Theoretical Semantics: (1) his physicalist program, (2) a general theory of truth, and (3) the necessity of a metalanguage when defining truth. Hartry Field argued that Tarski’s theory of truth failed to accomplish what it set out to do, which was to ground truth and semantics in physicalist terms. I argue that Tarski has been adequately defended by Richard Kirkham. Development of logic in the past three decades has created a shift away from Fregean and Russellian understandings of quantification to an independent conception …
La Prostitution Dans La Culture Française Du Dix-Neuvième Siècle: Classe, Sexe, Et Contagion, Kelsey Callahan
La Prostitution Dans La Culture Française Du Dix-Neuvième Siècle: Classe, Sexe, Et Contagion, Kelsey Callahan
Senior Honors Theses
The creation of the French Penal Code of 1791, which failed to address the legality of prostitution, and the social climate of nineteenth-century France led to the rapid development of sexual commerce. The spread of syphilitic diseases soon became a serious crisis, and the fault of the spread of syphilis and disease was quickly ascribed to purchasable women. Other social crises of the time, such as problems with sewage and the spread of disease and decay also came to be associated with prostitution. My thesis will examine ways in which male artists of the time used literature and painting to …
The Politics Of Peace For Vietnam: The Paris Peace Conference 1972/1973, Jonathan Lumpkin
The Politics Of Peace For Vietnam: The Paris Peace Conference 1972/1973, Jonathan Lumpkin
Senior Honors Theses
The 1972 Paris Peace Talks between Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho brought the American involvement in the Vietnam War to a close by early 1973. The main sticking points theretofore were stipulations in draft cease-fire agreements allowing Northern troops to remain in the South and the National Liberation Front's participation in South Vietnam's government. President of South Vietnam Nguyen Van Thieu adamantly opposed both proposed stipulations lest his power be diluted. Thus, Kissinger had to broker a diplomatic agreement between Thieu and Le Duc Tho which was acceptable to US foreign policy viz. “peace with honor.”

Divine Economy: George Rapp, The Harmony Society, And Jacksonian Democracy, James Tomney
Masters Theses
Divine Economy: George Rapp, the Harmony Society, and Jacksonian Democracy is a chronological exploration of the sucesses achieved, conflicts encountered, and eventual demise of George Rapp's Harmony Society. During its one-hundred year existence as it awaited the Second Coming of Christ, three successful agricultural and manufacturing towns were created by the Society out of the wilderness. Also explored is the impact Jacksonian Democracy had on George Rapp's Harmony Society during the 1824 to 1847 period, as is the contribution the Society made to American industrialization after George Rapp's death in 1847.
"They Cannot Catch Guerrillas In The Mountains Any More Than A Cow Can Catch Fleas": Guerrilla Warfare In Western Virginia, 1861-1865, Karissa Marken
"They Cannot Catch Guerrillas In The Mountains Any More Than A Cow Can Catch Fleas": Guerrilla Warfare In Western Virginia, 1861-1865, Karissa Marken
Masters Theses
The American Civil War unleashed great violence and chaos in the western mountains of Virginia. The guerrilla warfare there between Unionists and secessionists remained bitter throughout the war. No historical study has considered the entirety of pre-war western Virginia during the time it underwent a unique civil war within the context of the national struggle from 1861-1865. This study supports findings from studies of other areas of Appalachia that seek to explain the prevalence of such conflict in the mountains, challenges the myth of a Union Appalachia during the war, offers the backdrop for the political wrangling on both state …
Old Gods In New Clothes: The French Revolutionary Cults And The "Rebirth Of The Golden Age", Jennifer Boyet
Old Gods In New Clothes: The French Revolutionary Cults And The "Rebirth Of The Golden Age", Jennifer Boyet
Masters Theses
The French Revolution's state cults were possible because of French intellectuals' preference for pre-Christian Greco-Roman civilization, as well as France's history of heterodoxy. The philosophes endorsed ancient Greco-Roman civilization as embodying mankind's ideal and more "natural" state; French revolutionary leaders avidly read these ideas of the Enlightenment philosophers. This Enlightenment Classicalism influenced the designers of the French state religions to mirror Greco-Roman paganism in the new regime's festivals and iconography. The French people's fascination with the Occult further created the cultural and intellectual climate for the creation and acceptance of these new religions of the dechristianized republic. Under this worldview, …
Black Radicals And Marxist Internationalism: From The Iwma To The Fourth International, 1864–1948, Charles R. Holm
Black Radicals And Marxist Internationalism: From The Iwma To The Fourth International, 1864–1948, Charles R. Holm
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This project investigates historical relationships between Black Radicalism and Marxist internationalism from the mid-nineteenth through the first half of the twentieth century. It argues that contrary to scholarly accounts that emphasize Marxist Euro-centrism, or that theorize the incompatibility of “Black” and “Western” radical projects, Black Radicals helped shape and produce Marxist theory and political movements, developing theoretical and organizational innovations that drew on both Black Radical and Marxist traditions of internationalism. These innovations were produced through experiences of struggle within international political movements ranging from the abolition of slavery in the nineteenth century to the early Pan-African movements and struggles …
Leaving Myself Behind, Shea Montgomery
Leaving Myself Behind, Shea Montgomery
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This work presents poems detailing different events of my life in an almost chronological order, while at the same time juxtaposing them against the backdrop of a life changing car accident I suffered through when I was 21. The events detailed within the poems reflect moments in my life that occurred either before or after this car accident, and I have arranged them in such a way that I hope will show my own struggles with masculinity while growing up, while at the same time realizing my own mortality by the end.
The poems contained within this work detail my …
“Could Fulfillment Ever Be Felt As Deeply As Loss?”: A Postcolonial Examination Of The West’S Influence On India As Reflected By Kiran Desai’S Portrayal Of Twentieth Century Female Education In The Inheritance Of Loss, Ambreen Hooda
English Honors Theses
Drawing upon cultural, historical, and postcolonial methods, I analyze how Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss reflects twentieth century India, an India heavily influenced by the West. This analysis seeks to answer questions the effects of colonization and whether or not the formal education the main female character inherits is worth what she loses in the process. One of the two main storylines in Desai’s novel focuses on Sai, an educated teenage girl in Kalimpong, India. Buried within the flashbacks of her story is that of Bela “Nimi” Patel’s, Sai’s grandmother. Shortly after Nimi’s wedding, her husband, Jemubhai, leaves to …

An Overview Of The Medieval Iberian Peninsula Culture: From The Pages Of The Literature Of Medieval Spain To Its Cultural Context, Matthew Burner
An Overview Of The Medieval Iberian Peninsula Culture: From The Pages Of The Literature Of Medieval Spain To Its Cultural Context, Matthew Burner
HIM 1990-2015
The literature of Medieval Europe has been studied so extensively that there are a great number of academic contributions that can be analyzed by current and future generations. The purpose of this particular work is to examine this topic, but as it pertains to the Medieval Iberian Peninsula. The medieval age of Spain has been considered a period wrought with conflict and religious persecution throughout the confines of its borders. From the inception of the invasions of various European tribes into the Iberian Peninsula, the stage was set for a continual onset of conquest for many years to come. This …

Setting The Stage For A Sober Community On Campus, John Delisa
HIM 1990-2015
In the last thirty years, a movement in America helps students struggling with substance abuse and dependency. Only recently, in the 1970s to be precise, has there been any significant documentation that unveils the problem of substance abuse in college. Schools like Texas Tech University and Kennesaw State University are in the forefront helping hundreds of thousands of students who struggle to have a safe and productive college experience. These schools provide support systems, scholarships, and mentorship to those students who are free from drug use and dependence and are looking to further their education. It is my intent to …
The Accompanied Experience And The Aesthetics Of Memory, Allyson Dickerson
The Accompanied Experience And The Aesthetics Of Memory, Allyson Dickerson
HIM 1990-2015
For me, a memory is the thought of a feeling. Feeling, in this case, is the appreciable radiation of sensory emanating from all objects and persons in a given moment of time. “All thought, like all feeling, is a relationship between one human being and another human being or certain objects which form a part of his universe†(Astruc). Be it an instance of attraction to another person, a place, a creation, an object, or purely an aesthetic pleasure, said instance will become ingrained as a part of an aggregation of moment-to-moment experiences that form an individual’s universe and lifetime …
Investigating Flow, Presence, And Engagement In Independent Video Game Mechanics, Jon Dunaj
Investigating Flow, Presence, And Engagement In Independent Video Game Mechanics, Jon Dunaj
HIM 1990-2015
Video games are being studied today more than ever before. The engagement that they generate with the user, if harnessed, is thought to have applications across numerous other fields. Educators especially wish to implement elements of gaming into supplemental activities to help further interest students in the learning process. Many claim that this is because classroom’s today are in direct contradiction with the real home life of students. Student’s today were born into the fast paced world of the digital realm, frequently multi-tasking between watching television, playing games, doing homework, and socializing. As educators begin to create game like experiences …
The Incompatibility Of Freedom Of The Will And Anthropological Physicalism, Ariel Gonzalez
The Incompatibility Of Freedom Of The Will And Anthropological Physicalism, Ariel Gonzalez
HIM 1990-2015
Many contemporary naturalistic philosophers have taken it for granted that a robust theory of free will, one which would afford us with an agency substantial enough to render us morally responsible for our actions, is itself not conceptually compatible with the philosophical theory of naturalism. I attempt to account for why it is that free will (in its most substantial form) cannot be plausibly located within a naturalistic understanding of the world. I consider the issues surrounding an acceptance of a robust theory of free will within a naturalistic framework. Timothy O’Connor’s reconciliatory effort in maintaining both a scientifically naturalist …
The Hellenic Axel: The Greek Hellenization Of Central Asia And Its Impact Of The Development Of Buddhism, Ledio Hysi
The Hellenic Axel: The Greek Hellenization Of Central Asia And Its Impact Of The Development Of Buddhism, Ledio Hysi
HIM 1990-2015
The study of the Hellenistic period has produced a historical construction of the various relationships that formed between the Greco-Macedonian settlers and the natives they came into contact with. Hellenic kings established kingdoms as far as modern day Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, bringing them into contact with the Persian and Indian natives. The study herein is focused on the relationship that formed between the Greco-Macedonian descendants and the Buddhist group that emerged out of India. Numismatic evidence shows that Greco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kings held political control over regions bordering the Hindu Kush; furthermore, the Indo-Greek coins indicate a relationship between …
African-American Men And A Journey Through Musical Theatre And Opera, Shonn Mccloud
African-American Men And A Journey Through Musical Theatre And Opera, Shonn Mccloud
HIM 1990-2015
The purpose of this study is to outline the origins of African-American men in musical theatre, uncover their contributions to the art form, and explore how their legacy is continued today. I was inspired to do this research because through my undergraduate curriculum I have only narrowly studied African-American men in musical theatre and opera history. Upon realizing the lack of attention to this subject matter, not only in my curriculum but in historical resources, I was inspired to address the need for this research. The courses I have taken included Theatre History 1 and 2 and Musical Theatre History …
Ten-Minute Playwriting: A Study Of Design, Method, And Structure, Jeffrey Peacock
Ten-Minute Playwriting: A Study Of Design, Method, And Structure, Jeffrey Peacock
HIM 1990-2015
The purpose of my research was to discover the most effective ways to write ten-minute plays. I adapted various "suggestions" proposed in the many playwriting books I gathered to find the way that worked best for me as an artist. The majority of the books I read suggest writing ten-minute works before attempting a one-act or even a full-length play. My resources yielded a plethora of information on how to actually write a play. Three of my sources that proved to be enlightening were The Art and Craft of Playwriting by Jeffrey Hatcher, Playwriting for Dummies by Angelo Parra, and …
The Use Of Foley In Live Theatre As Demonstrated Through Theatre Ucf's Production Of Shipwrecked! An Entertainment - The Amazing Adventures Of Louis De Rougemont (As Told By Himself), Anthony Narciso
HIM 1990-2015
Foley, a term named after Universal Studios sound pioneer Jack Foley, is an allencompassing word for the creation of sound effects with materials that can emulate the sound of real world occurrences. While it is used heavily in the film and television world, Foley does not see much direct use in live theatrical performances. The widespread availability and use of prerecorded sound effects has altered the field of theatrical sound design. With thousands of audio files at a designer’s disposal, the need to create custom sounds is reduced. However, certain scripts do call for the use of live Foley. While …
The Oppression And Sexism Of African-American Women: Then And Now: Substantial Contributions To The History Of Musical Theatre, Kelli Owens
HIM 1990-2015
A wise Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Freedom is never given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed (King 1)." For as long as men and women have shared the planet, sexism has been a universal issue in civilization. In a social justice context, American society has found ways to oppress people for centuries. The Oxford Dictionary defines sexism as a "prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex ("sexism")." Voting rights in America were established in 1790, but it took years of petitioning at various women's rights conventions before the Nineteenth …
Positive Individualism, Rebecca Perdomo
Positive Individualism, Rebecca Perdomo
HIM 1990-2015
I will present and defend the notion of what I call Positive Individualism. Its purpose is to set forth a standard by which people are to treat others and themselves. I consider a common conception of individualism, its flaws, and a process of refining it. I formulate Positive Individualism, an idea in which every individual is valuable and therefore ought to be treated with respect and dignity by others. If this conception and the standards set forth were to be applied, communities would be able to function successfully and without compromising the individual since, as I argue, the individual is …
The Girl In 14g: Analyzing Solutions For Vocal Issues Through Vocal Pedagogy, Catherine Pires-Fernandes
The Girl In 14g: Analyzing Solutions For Vocal Issues Through Vocal Pedagogy, Catherine Pires-Fernandes
HIM 1990-2015
The intent of this thesis is to study a variety of vocal techniques and identify how to solve different vocal challenges in the musical theatre song, "The Girl in 14G." In order to be successful in the entertainment business, it is imperative that a singer performs healthily and in a variety of music styles. Through an exploration of Lessac Kinesensic Training, Estill Voice Training Systems and Bel Canto techniques, a singer can gain a holistic perspective about voice. I will study with three voice teachers, each of whom specializes in one of the aforementioned techniques. This thesis will reveal how …
Levinas On The 'Origin' Of Justice: Kant, Heidegger, And A Communal Structure Of Difference, Olga Tomasello
Levinas On The 'Origin' Of Justice: Kant, Heidegger, And A Communal Structure Of Difference, Olga Tomasello
HIM 1990-2015
The way we understand community fundamentally structures the way we approach justice. In opposition to totalizing structures of justice founded upon an ontological conception of community, Emmanuel Levinas conceives the possibility of a political or social structure of difference. I argue that the conceptions of community presented by Kant and Heidegger, either as a harmonious, unified being in common, or as a common-identity disclosed beneath the ontological horizon of being-with, necessarily leads to violence. This violence is reflected in the forms of justice instantiated by these philosophies, which privilege the ‘light’ of the universal over the particularity of individuals in …

Preparing Teen Girls To Enter The Workforce Through A Job-Readiness Training Program In The Dominican Republic, Genevieve F. Corrin
Preparing Teen Girls To Enter The Workforce Through A Job-Readiness Training Program In The Dominican Republic, Genevieve F. Corrin
Capstone Collection
A recent shift has concentrated international community development efforts on women, many specifically aiming to work with adolescent women. This capstone explores the design, facilitation and potential developmental impact of work-readiness training for teen girls in Cabarete, Dominican Republic. Such training comes with many challenges and possibilities for positive outcome. Methodologies and frameworks introduced through SIT courses aid in the examination of these challenges, the solutions used to transform them and possible preventative approaches. Tools gleaned from the spring SIT TDEL course, to which this capstone is linked, inspire the creation of the training. These tools are also used to …
Behind The Meatball: A Reflection On Italian Cuisine, Lost And Found, Christina Deray
Behind The Meatball: A Reflection On Italian Cuisine, Lost And Found, Christina Deray
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This thesis is a memoir about the lives of the matriarchs of my family: my grandmothers, Carmina and Marie, but in many other ways the memoir becomes a point of entry for a personal essay that explores the culture of authenticity in American cuisine. As a memoir, I offer a personal history of an original Italian cuisine from my very Italian family— how it was transplanted from the European “boot” to American soil, how it flourished through the lessons Carmina taught my family, and how it got transformed when it hit American. I reflect upon the appearance, after the Second …
