The Broad, Toiling Masses In All The Continents: Anticolonial Activists And The Atlantic Charter, Mark Reeves May 2014

Shinto: An Experience Of Being At Home In The World With Nature And With Others, Marcus Evans May 2014

Shinto: An Experience Of Being At Home In The World With Nature And With Others, Marcus Evans

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This suggests that Shinto, in communicating its objective, appeals to the emotions more so than to the intellect; and that Shinto’s sacred objective does not transcend the natural world of both nature and everyday affairs. This study pursues this goal by showing the experiential and existential dimensions of the three primary features of Shinto: it shows how kami (or kami-ness) is thought of …

Teaching Asian Religions From Within Asian American Community, Emily Wu May 2014

Teaching Asian Religions From Within Asian American Community, Emily Wu

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Article Excerpt:

Our 87 year-old Elder, a third-generation descendent of a Chinese American fishing village in Northern California, gives us a timid smile from behind the bar of the small diner that he and his family have operated since the 1940s. My students and I have just set up a laptop and microphone for recording a first-person account of his life story. The Elder looks over our shoulders, where a man stands with a stern face and his arms crossed—this is a member of the non-profit organization that now operates the village as a park. The twinkles in the eyes …

Self-Control Helps People Avoid Violence, Zoe Thomas

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"When Martin Luther King Jr spoke these words, he was addressing the masses of mainly Black Americans who were fighting for freedom from discrimination and for the right to be treated as equally as any other human being. The struggle was long and hard. They had to endure abuse from the white men around them, who felt that they did not deserve to have equal rights. This was a struggle that easily erupted into physical violence. The white men fought the blacks and the blacks fought back. However, Dr. …

The most thought‐provoking of these include “Is religion inherently violent? Why or why not?” and “Could teaching religion be an act of violence? Why or why not?” Religion is not inherently violent"
