The Artist And The Rebel: The Art Of Graffiti And Its Impact On Memory Architecture, Stephen A. Setman May 2014

The Artist And The Rebel: The Art Of Graffiti And Its Impact On Memory Architecture, Stephen A. Setman

Celebration

The lasting presence of graffiti in major cities like Berlin raises the question, what kind of perspective does such an art form have on memory? Given that graffiti are written or painted on structures and buildings, which are already their own kind of monument, and that the content of graffiti tends towards the politically and socially critical, how are we to understand the relationship of these works to places of memory creation? Why, for example, do we sometimes give monumental protection (Denkmanlschutz) to works of graffiti, and why so often not? My research investigates the roll of graffiti in cultural …

Wilderness, Kathryn E. Bucolo May 2014

Wilderness, Kathryn E. Bucolo

Celebration

The collection of short stories I have written focuses on how people process (or do not process) tragedy, especially as related to themes of grief, memory, and faith. Most of the stories I have written are dysfunctional narratives in that they do not necessarily provide solid conclusions or solutions for the characters or readers, reflecting current trends in literature to move away from the didactic and moralistic in favor of the ambiguous and unstable, the hopeless and sorrowful. In "Wilderness", one of the pieces I wrote for my collection, Robert struggles with the death of his wife when he realizes …

The Jewish Hasdai Family: A Study Of Its Administrative And Intellectual Role In Andalusia: A Historical Study, Zahraa Mohsen Hassan Al-Samawi May 2014

The Jewish Hasdai Family: A Study Of Its Administrative And Intellectual Role In Andalusia: A Historical Study, Zahraa Mohsen Hassan Al-Samawi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The Hazzady family was one of the Jewish families that received favor and patronage from the Muslim rulers of Al-Andalus. This family converted to Islam and enjoyed prestige, status, and honor in Al-Andalus. What makes this subject particularly interesting and worthy of study is understanding the nature of the privileges that Jews in general, and the Hazzady family in particular, enjoyed during the reigns of Abd al-Rahman al-Nasir and his son al-Hakam, extending into the era of the Taifa kingdoms, both in political and administrative roles, as well as in the intellectual and scholarly spheres. This is especially relevant given …

Features Of Feminine Beauty (A Study Of Andalusian Love Poetry Until The End Of The Almoravid Era), Noha Hussein Kandoh May 2014

Features Of Feminine Beauty (A Study Of Andalusian Love Poetry Until The End Of The Almoravid Era), Noha Hussein Kandoh

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The inclusion of feminine qualities and characteristics in Andalusian poetry is merely a reflection of the poet's appreciation of women, and an emotional outlet; it enriches the poet's experiences with a vibrant artistic vision, allowing him to express himself on a wide range of topics. Like his counterparts in the Eastern Arab world, the Andalusian poet employed certain characteristics that imbued women with a delicate feminine charm, endowing these traits with psychological and artistic functions. Through these, he expressed his inclination towards the concept of freedom, using women as a source of inspiration, enabling him to express himself and enjoy …

Deterioration Of Soviet-Chinese Relations During The Chinese Cultural Revolution, Fatima Jassim Graduates May 2014

Deterioration Of Soviet-Chinese Relations During The Chinese Cultural Revolution, Fatima Jassim Graduates

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The Chinese Cultural Revolution of 1966 is considered one of the most significant events in Chinese political history. It exacerbated tensions between China and its ally, the Soviet Union, and further strained their already fragile relationship. During the Cultural Revolution, Sino-Soviet relations deteriorated dramatically. China launched a comprehensive ideological attack on all aspects of Soviet policy, both domestic and foreign. Mao Zedong's decision to sever party-to-party relations with the Soviet leadership contributed to the complete breakdown of relations, leaving only a few low-level government contacts where once there had been a multifaceted alliance. The impact of the Cultural Revolution was …

The Structural Level In Al-Jahiz’S Letters, Sarhan Jafat Salman, Ali Abdul Hussein Jaber May 2014

The Structural Level In Al-Jahiz’S Letters, Sarhan Jafat Salman, Ali Abdul Hussein Jaber

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Following our initial study of Al-Jahiz's letters, which focused on an important aspect of his poetry—namely, the symbolic significance of characters—and after achieving valuable results, this experience further inspired and motivated us to undertake another critical approach. This is especially true given that this great poet has not been studied from the angles and using the methods of analysis and interpretation that we employed. Furthermore, our current study revolves around "The Lexicon of Animals in His Poetry," a topic that consistently emerged in the literary corpus of this poet. The question that constantly arose during our research was: What circumstances …

Ophelia According To Sheikh Jaafar: “Female Authority In His Poetry”, Kazem Fakher Hajem Al-Khafaji

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

There is no doubt that Arabic poetry, especially modern poetry, draws upon the cultural heritage, both Arabic and universal, and employs it artistically to convey its message and express its underlying themes. Hardly any collection of modern poetry is devoid of religious and mythological allusions and symbols, which are used to express contemporary ideas. Returning to these symbols and drawing inspiration from them is a way of returning to the original sources of human experience. Our poets have turned to Greek, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Egyptian mythology, as well as sacred texts, drawing from them and using them as an artistic …

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

This treatise, which I present today, explains the origin of the phrase "Do not fear," by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Hamdani. It comprehensively and meticulously addresses all aspects of the subject, drawing on relevant linguistic and grammatical rules, and supported by numerous examples and references. The author also included additional insights and explanations derived from the sources used or mentioned, aiming to provide a complete and unified understanding of this topic. While the subject itself is not new, being discussed in various linguistic and grammatical texts, the author sought to present a more cohesive and comprehensive treatment, addressing the shortcomings …

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The study of age structure is of particular importance to geographers, as it helps reveal the demographic characteristics of populations based on age groups and their variations, and the resulting patterns with their distinct forms and features. Furthermore, geographers study the various factors that influence these variations and their relationship to the prevailing conditions within those societies. They also seek to analyze the statistical indicators related to age structure in order to classify populations and describe their nature, characteristics, and attributes.

The Systematic Guide In Reading The Heritage Text: The Problem Of Identity And The Crisis Of The Other, Hazem Hashem Mankhi May 2014

The Systematic Guide In Reading The Heritage Text: The Problem Of Identity And The Crisis Of The Other, Hazem Hashem Mankhi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Within the realm of critical engagement, the preoccupation with the fundamental questions of philosophical inquiry grows. It anxiously observes the creative process as it seeks meaning. This is the deepest driving force leading to the creation of the new, and the exploration of what is hidden, unspoken, postponed, or marginalized—even repressed and silenced. Thus, it is the product of a conscious force that strives but does not always achieve its goals, that attempts but does not always complete its tasks, leaving the doors open in critical discourse for the emergence of new, modified, and evolving conditions in the interplay between …

When Parties Swap Platforms: The Changing Racial Policies Of Democrats And Republicans, Charles O. Boyd May 2014

When Parties Swap Platforms: The Changing Racial Policies Of Democrats And Republicans, Charles O. Boyd

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

This article examines the shift in the Democratic and Republican parties with regard to the rights of African Americans. Debunking partisan distortions of history on both sides, "When Parties Swap Platforms" demonstrates that prior to the 1960s, the Republican Party was more supportive of African Americans' rights and that during the 1960s, the Democratic Party became the more supportive institution. Evidence is also provided showing that Hubert Humphrey played a much larger role in changing the Democratic Party's stance on civil rights than is commonly known.

Male Hypergamy And Social Status, Cedric N. Floyd May 2014

Male Hypergamy And Social Status, Cedric N. Floyd

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

Male hypergamy, a social pattern rarely observed, has been prevalent throughout history as a symbol of social status for men. Hypergamy is the act of marrying into a higher social class or caste. This paper analyzes a few exemplary men ranging from the Italian Renaissance to Twenty-First Century America to make note of this pattern and attempts to understand how it affects the social order in middle-to-upper class society. The research, gathered from various books on class and society, presents an idea of various men who have, in some way or another, used their marriages as a social asset and …

Uncompromising Spirits: The Entwined Careers Of William Lloyd Garrison And Josephine Butler, Anne A. Salter, Charles O. Boyd

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

William Lloyd Garrison and Josephine Butler challenged the political structures of their times. Both employed similar strategies to turn the mind set of American and British citizens. Garrison’s work as an American abolitionist inspired Butler and her work to repeal the Contagious Diseases Acts in Great Britain. Their life long commitment to liberty and justice was successful proving that one person can make a difference. Brief character sketches of each serve to revive interest in these important but somewhat neglected individuals.
