This scene from the Annunciation is all that remains of a commission for the Church of Santa Margherita, the devotional center of a hospital and monastery in the Tuscan city of Prato. Its daring color and figural exaggeration are aspects of a late-Renaissance Mannerist style for which the Florentine artist Mirabello Cavalori was known. Numerous historians have offered explanations for both Europe's response to the American Civil War as well as motivations behind Europe's refusal to extend recognition to the Confederacy and/or militarily intervene in the war. All previously published explanations included in this thesis are plausible, credible and most likely valid. Therefore, this thesis argues that the historiographical explanations offered, prior to now, have been far too narrowly focused and therefore too myopic to provide a proper, comprehensive explanation. At the behest of Pope Gregory the Great (c. 540- 604), Augustine (later called Augustine of Canterbury) embarked on a mission that would end with Britain reentering the Christian fold. Most historical records record Augustine's deeds, but say little directly his character or his personality. This paper examines some indirect inferences we can gather from legends and traditions, in the hope of producing a better understanding of Augustine the man, that we might properly understand his deeds in the context of a living, breathing person. The paper also explores the plausibility of these legends.
