La « Langue Fantôme » : Une Présence Familière Dans L’Écriture – Présentation Du Poète Malek Alloula Suivie D’Un Entretien, Yamna Abdelkader-Chaldi. Jun 2014

The evolution of Malek Alloula’s works, an important poet of Algerian literature whose first works date back to the sixties, is analyzed by Yamna Abdelkader. Afterwards, she interviews him on his poetic work and its relationship to language. The poet thus explains his writing ; how he composes his poetry in relation to the creative process ; his technique ; the influence of its cultural origins, and its relationship to language. In using the term “phantom language”, the poet refers to the haunting presence of the Arabic language spoken in Algeria, which, while unseen, has a major influence on his …

I consider myself as a poet of oral tradition, using a pen. Somebody who passes on words I received from my ancestors, speakers of the essentials, masters of words, who could not write but who knew the basics: words and proverbs which give birth to the light necessary to progression. So my quest is turned towards a poetry of initiation and passing on whose only purpose is to teach men to trust on their fragility. So I created my mother tongue in a midway zone between Tégué, my parental tongue and French, my written language. Both languages are flowing inside …

The African sitcoms in the wake of South American telenovelas build steps to win spaces on TV screens. The case of Burkina Faso shows the vitality of filmmaking in second language, with breakable structure of production context.

Why have I chosen to write in French? My personal engagement in front of French language, my profession of teacher and researcher in French linguistics, my quality as a writer and the years I worked as director of French at the International Organization of Francophonie have largely contributed to increase my link with this tongue. We say, the language belongs to his speakers and particularly to the people who use it as the place of expression of art and original thought.

Behind the existence of a social malaise in the suburbs and of numerous stereotypes, a linguistic innovation characteristic of young people has developed. Most of these young people, who consider themselves excluded from society, have created their own social and linguistic space. They have appropriated the French language and transformed it after introducing their own identity marks. The resulting language turns out to be a linguistic refuge for identity, which leads to the finding of a subjective stability.

Where Have All The Good Men Gone? A Psychoanalytic Reading Of The Absent Fathers & Bad Dads On Abc's Lost, Melissa R. Ames Jun 2014

Where Have All The Good Men Gone? A Psychoanalytic Reading Of The Absent Fathers & Bad Dads On Abc's Lost, Melissa R. Ames

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Fictional fathers in narratives are often allegorical in nature and contemporary television is not immune from this. ABC’s groundbreaking television drama, Lost, offers a multitude of father figures that suggests not only a crisis concerning the role of the father in the 21st century but also the crisis of national security experienced by Americans after the attacks. In particular, the program showcases three specific types of troubled father/child relationships: those in which the father is absent and/or dead, those where the father is portrayed as abusive and/or evil, and those where the father and child are estranged and/or their relationship …

Connecting Globally And Giving Back: Using Video Conferencing And Iclickers For Academic Service Learning, Kathryn Johnson

Conference Presentations

This paper examines the best practices and lessons learned from implementing an academic service learning project based on an interactive video conference and using iClickers. Seventy students in an undergraduate World History class explored the rich history and culture of Syria by interacting with a Fulbright Scholar from that country. Inspired by the scholar’s emphasis on the human face of Syria rather than current political turmoil, the students initiated a fundraiser through UNICEF to benefit the innocent youth victims currently in refugee camps. Students expressed their opinions using iClickers and voted in true democratic fashion on every direction and step …

The Narrators And Narratees Of Kazuo Ishiguro, Katherine E. Harrell Jun 2014

The Narrators And Narratees Of Kazuo Ishiguro, Katherine E. Harrell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis examines the narratees of three novels by Kazuo Ishiguro: An Artist of the Floating World, The Remains of the Day, and Never Let Me Go. In each novel, a first person narrator directs his or her story toward an unidentified narratee. Through their narration, the narrators reveal who they imagine their narratees to be and why they are telling their stories to these particular types of people. In relating their narratives, Ono, Stevens, and Kathy H., the respective narrators, each reveal a secret they have sought to hide from the other characters in the novel, …

A Study On What Factors Influence Teachers To Remain In The Teaching Profession, Louis S. Jensen Jr. Jun 2014

A Study On What Factors Influence Teachers To Remain In The Teaching Profession, Louis S. Jensen Jr.

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the employment factors that schools have control over and how teachers and administrators perceive these factors to have the most effect in influencing teachers to remain in the profession. This study was conducted by administering a survey to public school building administrators and public school teachers in Indiana. Teachers’ and administrators’ perceptions were measured on what reasons a teacher (hypothetically) might leave the profession. A total of 2,219 teachers and 208 building administrators submitted complete responses to the Teacher Retention Survey. The Teacher Retention Survey was developed by this researcher to quantitatively …

Kim So-Wŏl’S Chindallaekkot (Azaleas) As An Immersive Environment, Wayne De Fremery, Jusub Kim

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship

According to English poet Sir Philip Sidney’s well-known Apology, poetry is meant to instruct and delight. In the spirit of this assertion, our ongoing experiments algorithmically detect patterns in vernacular Korean poetic texts and manifest them creatively in digital environments. Our aspiration is to deepen the discussion of vernacular Korean poetry by enabling engagements with Korean poetic texts that privilege image over discourse, if only temporarily. The aim is to see, quite literally, what Korean poems can be in order to deepen discussions of what they are or might mean. This project extends the authors’ previous work by attempting to …

Nous Avons Survécu. Enfin Je Parle, Leon Malmed Jun 2014

Nous Avons Survécu. Enfin Je Parle, Leon Malmed

Zea E-Books Collection

After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Center College in the summer of 1860, he entered medical school at the University of Virginia. Ambroise Paré (1510 To 1590): A Surgeon Centuries Ahead Of His Time., James T. Shen, B.S., Michael Weinstein, Md, Alec C. Beekley, Md, Charles J. Yeo, Md, Scott W. Cowan, Md

Department of Surgery Gibbon Society Historical Profiles

In their extensive writings, Hippocrates and Celsus counseled physicians to be knowledgeable in both the medical and surgical management of patient recovery. However, their words fell by the wayside because cutting of the body was forbidden by the Roman Catholic Church. Furthermore, the contemporaneous Arabic medical teachings emphasized tradition and authority over observation and personal experience. This created an ever-growing rift between the schools of surgical and pharmacologic medicine with both groups denying their involvement in the other domain. Surgeons had been plagued by postoperative complications including infection, malnutrition, and muscular wasting for centuries. Surgeons were forced to re-examine how …

Pavel Tretiakov’S Icons, Wendy Salmond Jun 2014

Pavel Tretiakov’S Icons, Wendy Salmond

Art Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Between 1890 and his death in 1898, the Moscow art collector Pavel Tretiakov acquired sixty-two icons of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. With this comparatively late entry into the world of icons, Tretiakov laid the foundation for one of the world’s greatest collections of medieval Russian paintings. Why is it, then, that Tretiakov’s icons are today so rarely mentioned and so hard to find? The most practical explanation is that they were simply swallowed up into the vast repositories of the reorganized State Tretiakov Gallery in 1930, along with thousands of icons from churches and private collections nationalized afer 1917. …

To Be A Man: A Re-Assessment Of Black Masculinity In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun And Les Blancs, Julie M. Burrell Jun 2014

To Be A Man: A Re-Assessment Of Black Masculinity In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun And Les Blancs, Julie M. Burrell

English Faculty Publications

The first Black woman to pen a Broadway play, Lorraine Hansberry scripted a majority of male protagonists. Critics tend to see Hansberry’s depiction of Black men as either an unfortunate departure from her feminist concerns, or as damaging representations of Black masculinity. In contrast to such views, this essay maps the trajectory of Hansberry’s career-long project of scripting positive visions of Black masculinity, from the politically progressive, while still patriarchal, structures of masculinity in A Raisin in the Sun, to the heterogeneous performances of revolutionary masculinity in Les Blancs. Further, in her role as public intellectual, Hansberry questioned prevailing assumptions …

Ejemplos De Jejeo Salvadoreño En Cuentos De Barro De Salarrué., Juan Rodríguez Prieto Jun 2014

Ejemplos De Jejeo Salvadoreño En Cuentos De Barro De Salarrué., Juan Rodríguez Prieto

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

By expanding the definition of jejeo with aspirations of fricative consonants in syllable/ word initial position, dialectal examples which previously did not have a precise terminology to be identified, as fuerte ['hwer.te], can now be defined. In Salarrué’s Cuentos de barro there are dozens of terms that justify the expansion of the definition of jejeo, suggesting, in addittion, the need to determine the subgroup of fricative consonants that can suffer such an aspiration process.
