Reaching The Nations Through Our Cities, Chris Clayman Jul 2014

Reaching The Nations Through Our Cities, Chris Clayman

Great Commission Research Journal

While the American public perceives New York City to be a post-Christian environment, reality is that the city is moving into a post-secular existence largely influenced by religious immigrants. These immigrants are symbolic of a new era in pioneer missions—one in which migration, transnationalism, globalization, and urbanization pose newer challenges and opportunities than uncharted geographies, isolated societies, and foreign cultures. “Reaching the Nations Through Our Cities” proposes that the next challenge for missionary pioneers is reaching busy, hidden, influential unreached peoples who have migrated to cities. Based on several years of research on the immigrant populations in Metro New York, …

The Church Of The Nazarene And Church Growth: Better Together?, Duane H. Boady Jul 2014

The Church Of The Nazarene And Church Growth: Better Together?, Duane H. Boady

Great Commission Research Journal

The essence of the article is to offer a fresh look at Church Growth to the Church of the Nazarene. Perhaps the Church of the Nazarene is one of many denominations that struggle with plateaued and declining churches. It seems to this writer that we have failed to ask difficult questions about what we are doing and why we do those things. If we are part of the Body of Christ, then we ought to be flourishing. Instead the converse is often more true. The Church Growth movement may have brought out some people hoping to sell their latest and …

Why Multiply Healthy Churches?, Charles Van Engen Jul 2014

Why Multiply Healthy Churches?, Charles Van Engen

Great Commission Research Journal

This article examines biblical motivations to multiply new, healthy churches. Such motivations emerge from the following five biblical truths: a) God the Father seeks and finds the lost, b) The love of Christ obligates us, c) God sent the Holy Spirit for all human beings, d) The local congregation is the primary locus of the rule of the King, and e) Multiplying churches is for the glory of God. Our loving and compassionate triune God desires that all women and men become disciples of Jesus Christ, active participants in a local Christian church, and committed agents of the transformation of …

The Ripple Effect: The Influence Of Don Quixote In Modern Artistic Mediums, Zack Newman

World Languages and Cultures

This paper focuses on the influence of Don Quixote in modern cinema, television, literature, and magazines. It explores the ground breaking episodic nature of the work which has continued on to television, comic books, and graphic novels today. The project demonstrates timeless tropes and motifs that have been used in Don Quixote, Greek mythology, 20th and 21st century cinema, and television programs. This document takes a specific look at the social commentary of women’s rights and the double standards that are displayed in this work that still exist today. And finally, it explores the similarities of military and religious criticism …

Machado De Assis: Uma Nova Leitura Através Das Lentes Do Corpus Lingu?Stico, Liege Christiane Pradera

Theses and Dissertations

Review: 'Harold Frederic’S Social Drama And The Crisis Of 1890s Evangelical Protestant Culture', William Vance Trollinger Jul 2014

Review: 'Harold Frederic’S Social Drama And The Crisis Of 1890s Evangelical Protestant Culture', William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

Harold Frederic’s The Damnation of Theron Ware (1896) is a terrific novel. The title character is a young, naïve, poorly educated Methodist minister who — when the narrative begins — has been appointed to take the pastorate of a small-town church in upstate New York. It is within only a matter of weeks after moving to Octavius with his wife, Alice, that Theron makes the acquaintance of exotic and compelling individuals who challenge his heretofore unexamined evangelical faith. Abandoning his Methodism with impunity, Ware is soon hurtling toward his “damnation.”

Damned but not dead: At the end of the novel, …

One Year On: Obliterated By Degrees, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

The battle anniversary loomed in the waning days of June. And Gettysburg was preparing. Aside from the feasting in the Spangler Meadow on the 4th, the holiday would undoubtedly see tourists swarming the fields and hills where just a few dozen weeks before time had stood still and Death held a grand carnival. Theoretical Review Of Phonics Instruction For Struggling/ Beginning Readers Of English, Pragasit Sitthitikul Jul 2014

Theoretical Review Of Phonics Instruction For Struggling/ Beginning Readers Of English, Pragasit Sitthitikul

PASAA

Learning to read is a complex task for beginners of English. They must coordinate many cognitive processes to read accurately and fluently, including recognizing words, constructing the meanings of sentences and text, and retaining the information read in memory. An essential part of the process for beginners involves learning the alphabetic system, including, letter-sound correspondences and spelling patterns, and learning how to apply this knowledge in their reading (National Reading Panel, 2000). Systematic phonics instruction is a way of teaching reading that stresses the acquisition of letter-sound correspondences and their use to read and spell words (Harris & Hodges, 1995). …

Idea Sharing: Using Shakespeare's Measure For Measure As A Means Of Developing Different Modes Of Student Authorship, Stella Smyth Jul 2014

Idea Sharing: Using Shakespeare's Measure For Measure As A Means Of Developing Different Modes Of Student Authorship, Stella Smyth

PASAA

Shakespeare's Measure for Measure is a critique of King James I's concept of an absolute monarchy, in his constitutional treatise, namely Basilikon Doron. In the light of modern reader response theories, and with due regard to Renaissance literacy practices, I show how Shakespeare's authorial method of appropriating Basilikon Doron can be emulated through the design of writing activities for advanced EAP classes, or as part of university English language and literature syllabuses.

Assessing The Depth And Breadth Of Vocabulary Knowledge With Listening Comprehension, Feng Teng

PASAA

This study was inspired by Qian (1999) and Stæhr (2009) and researched 88 Chinese learners who had already passed the College English Test 4 (CET). These learners volunteered to participate in the study regarding the depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge and its relationship with listening comprehension, which was assessed by analyzing the results of a series of comprehensive tests including the vocabulary size test (VST), depth of vocabulary knowledge (DVK), and listening comprehension test (LCT). The findings suggested that a vocabulary level of 5,000 word families had a higher correlation with academic listening comprehension (r=0.86), while a vocabulary level …

Teachers' Reflections Towards Performance-Based Language Assessment, Bordin Chinda

PASAA

This research aims at examining the reactions of tertiary EFL teachers towards the use of performance-based language assessment. The study employed a mixed-method research methodology. For the quantitative method, 36 teachers responded to a questionnaire survey. In addition, four teachers participated in the in-depth interviews which were conducted twice, at the beginning and at the end of the semester. The data from the survey revealed that the teachers were aware that the assessments (performance-based and traditional methods) could have both positive and negative impacts on teaching and learning. In addition, the participants in the interviews pointed out that they had …

Reader's Theater: An Alternative Tool To Develop Reading Fluency Among Thai Efl Learners, Panya Lekwilai

PASAA

Fluency in reading is critical for becoming a successful reader and strongly correlates with reading comprehension. Fluency in reading refers to appropriate reading speed, accurate word recognition, appropriate phrasing, and appropriate expression when reading orally. Reader's Theater (RT) is a reading instructional method that requires readers to read aloud from scripts. It is recognized as a method that helps develop reading fluency of L1 and ESL/EFL learners of different levels of proficiency. RT also incentivizes and persuades learners to re-read the same text several times. This paper will explore the benefits of RT as well as suggestions about how it …

Manipulation: Jan Švankmajer's Animation Technique And Criticism On Civilization, Haruka Kawakami Jul 2014

Manipulation: Jan Švankmajer's Animation Technique And Criticism On Civilization, Haruka Kawakami

Journal of Urban Culture Research

"Manipulation" is an important concept in the films of Jan Švankmajer, an influential Czech surrealist filmmaker. As a surrealist artist who aims for the liberation of humans from any kind of restraint, he insists that people should resist all kinds of societal manipulations. His insistent exposure of manipulation can be seen as a protest against its concealment as a convention. However, the idea of manipulation has more ambiguous meanings in his films. Švankmajer brings inorganic objects to life through careful manipulations, such as stop-motion animation, while applying the same techniques to humans to disrupt their identities. Consequently, both humans and …

ETSU Faculty Works

This work offers an interdisciplinary study of preventative health in 16th and 17th century Italy. Her-Storicizing Baldness: Situating Women's Experiences With Baldness From Skin And Hair Disorders, Kasie Holmes Jul 2014

Her-Storicizing Baldness: Situating Women's Experiences With Baldness From Skin And Hair Disorders, Kasie Holmes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A general goal to my study was to promote an inclusive approach to baldness by sharing and centering women's experiences with baldness from skin and hair conditions, such as autoimmune alopecia areata conditions and monilethrix. Specifically, a main goal of my study was to her-storicize the lived experiences of women who are bald from skin and hair conditions by examining medical and cultural discourses surrounding these conditions, femininity, and female baldness. Additionally, my study considers strategies of accommodation and resistance that bald women perform in a given context, space, or time. For instance, I consider the ways participants manage their …

Navigating With Harriet Quimby, Rachael Peckham Jul 2014

Navigating With Harriet Quimby, Rachael Peckham

English Faculty Research

My maternal grandmother Ruth never missed an episode of the game show Jeopardy! One night in 2008, while I was working on my dissertation about a long-forgotten aviatrix with whom my family and I share connections, Grandma Ruth called to tell me about a Jeopardy! clue she had just heard: "The first woman to fly across the English Channel." My grandmother was reserved and soft-spoken, but I imagine her slapping the armrests of the recliner, disturbing the outstretched cat at her side, and beating all three contestants to the buzzer: "Who is Harriet Quimby?"--the subject of my dissertation.

Computer Animation For Learning Building Construction Management: A Comparative Study Of First-Person Versus Third-Person View, Jun Yu

Open Access Theses

In this paper, we have explored the effect of perspective view in educational animations on students' learning of building construction management tasks and on students' preference of perspective views. We conducted a pre-test and post-test and found no significant advantages of computer animation presented in different perspective views across three different groups. Results showed that although students have preference on perspective views, perspective views did not influence learning outcome. The study also investigated the efficacy of animation as a teaching/learning tool in comparison to the traditional textbook. Findings showed that animation enhanced student learning, although the difference was not statistically …

Experiencing Our Only Comfort: A Post-Reformation Refocus In The Heidelberg Catechism, Jan Van Vliet Jul 2014

Experiencing Our Only Comfort: A Post-Reformation Refocus In The Heidelberg Catechism, Jan Van Vliet

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Last year marked the 450th anniversary of the publication of the Heidelberg Catechism. In celebration of this momentous occasion and as a reminder of the contemporary applicability of this highly-regarded confessional document, this essay examines the earliest and most complete Puritan commentary extant: that of second-generation Puritan thinker William Ames (1576–1633), protégé of William Perkins (1558–1602), the “father” of the Puritan movement. We examine methodological considerations and two topical issues that arise when the venerated Catechism is placed in the hands of a practically oriented, post-Reformation divine for whom theology was none other than “living to God”: Theologia est doctrina …

"Do You Bant?" William Banting And Bantingism: A Cultural History Of A Victorian Anti-Fat Aesthetic, Jaime Michelle Miller Jul 2014

"Do You Bant?" William Banting And Bantingism: A Cultural History Of A Victorian Anti-Fat Aesthetic, Jaime Michelle Miller

English Theses & Dissertations

In the second half of the nineteenth century, a retired Victorian undertaker named William Banting (1796-1878) dramatically altered attitudes toward fat by initiating the profoundly consequential idea of the diet as a saleable commodity capable of marking identity within particular social and racial contexts and connecting obesity with degeneracy, illness, and evil. His work Letter on Corpulence Addressed to the General Public self-published in 1863 describes how, with physician William Harvey, Banting reduced his weight by nearly fifty pounds by following a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Banting and his dieting phenomenon transformed the English cultural consciousness of fatness, and created a …
