On This Journey: Suite For Big Band And Five Voices, Kara L. Baxter Jul 2014

On This Journey: Suite For Big Band And Five Voices, Kara L. Baxter

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

On This Journey: Suite for Big Band and Five Voices is a four-movement, programmatic work that explores traditional big band instrumentation with the addition of five voices used as instruments. Violin and cello are added in the last two movements.

This is the story of a journey, with each movement representing a phase of that journey. The first movement, Charmed with Possibilities, is a musical representation of Chicago. During the improvisation solos, the time moves fluidly between a measure of six and five. The meter and key change often, evoking a sense of the ever-changing city.

The second movement, Stop, …

Agent Red: Fashioning Agency In Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Christopher M. Yalen Jul 2014

Agent Red: Fashioning Agency In Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Christopher M. Yalen

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

In Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, we are introduced to a dystopian patriarchal society named Gilead, where women are relegated to the roles of wife, servant, and surrogate. Although the men of Gilead have built this society with men at the top, the women of the novel show a surprising amount of agency within their own spheres of influence. So the question remains: who is really in control of Gilead? While men are certainly remain the figureheads of power in The Handmaid's Tale, we find that the women of the novel have copious influence within their own realms, …

A secondary goal of this study is to reveal students' perceptions of the use of both Spoken and Standard Arabic in the classroom, and what effect their perceptions may have on their developing attitudes toward Arabic, and their motivation to learn the language and study its …

Portrayals Of Women In Chen Hongshou’S Figure Paintings, Lai Na Wan Jul 2014

Portrayals Of Women In Chen Hongshou’S Figure Paintings, Lai Na Wan

Lingnan Theses

Chen Hongshou (1598/1599-1652), a famous artist of late Ming and early Qing China, was particularly well-known for his figure paintings, which exerted a noticeable influence on later generations and has been the subject most commonly discussed by scholars. Among Chen’s figure painting oeuvre, this study is especially concerned with his portrayals of women ranging between the 1630s and 1650s with an intention to explore what their representations, audience and function reveal about the artist. The existing monographs on Chen’s female figures is limited to only few case studies, from which the artist’s depictions of women have not been clearly sorted …

An English Newspaper For British And Chinese : The South China Morning Post Study (1903-1941), Yizheng Zou

Lingnan Theses

This thesis studies the relationship between the South China Morning Post and its audiences. To be viable and profitable in the Hong Kong media market, the SCMP had to meet the various needs of its Chinese and British readership. For example, British readers were serious sports fans and the SCMP endeavoured to be the best newspaper to target its wealthy British audience who was obsessed with the game of lawn bowls. Because playing fields were mainly granted to the British ex-pats over Chinese citizens, the sports pages of the SCMP mainly attracted British audiences. Chinese readers were generally merchants who …

Beyond The Pages: The Significance Of The Social Self Proposed In Jane Austen's Persuasion, Veronica Grupico Jul 2014

Beyond The Pages: The Significance Of The Social Self Proposed In Jane Austen's Persuasion, Veronica Grupico

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This paper focuses on Austen's novel Persuasion and how she rejects the Romantic notion of the self defined by individualism, which leads to the breakdown of society. Instead of the Romantic self, with its emphasis on self-examination, retrospection, and emotion, Austen advocates for an older notion of the self, a view based in eighteenth-century notions of social networks, mutual responsibility, and the moral function of emotion. Persuasion links Romanticism’s self, which was popular at the time that Austen was writing, with the breakdown of society, arguing that not just social stability but much-needed social vitality depends on the interdependence and …

Limitation, Subversion, And Agency: Gendered Spaces In The Works Of Margaret Mahy, Cynthia Voigt, And Dia Na Wynne Jones, Elizabeth Ann Pearce Jul 2014

Limitation, Subversion, And Agency: Gendered Spaces In The Works Of Margaret Mahy, Cynthia Voigt, And Dia Na Wynne Jones, Elizabeth Ann Pearce

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I argue that adolescent literature featuring female protagonists often illustrates complicated relationships between gender and space. My contention is that because of their gender, these protagonists are uniquely constrained to the home, which creates a literary pattern that has serious ideological implications. While I argue that the dominant discourse of these novels implies that girls should adhere to specific cultural norms, some of these works, however, provide room for subversion and agency, including new ways of looking at patriarchal constructions. To demonstrate these issues at work, I use the novels of three female authors from three different …

The Discipline Of History And The “Modern Consensus In The Historiography Of Mathematics”, Michael N. Fried Jul 2014

The Discipline Of History And The “Modern Consensus In The Historiography Of Mathematics”, Michael N. Fried

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Teachers and students of mathematics often view history of mathematics as just mathematics as they know it, but in another form. This view is based on a misunderstanding of the nature of history of mathematics and the kind of knowledge it attempts to acquire. Unfortunately, it can also lead to a deep sense of disappointment with the history of mathematics itself, and, ultimately, a misunderstanding of the historical nature of mathematics. This kind of misunderstanding and the disappointment following from it--both raised to the level of resentment--run through the paper "A Critique of the Modern Consensus in the Historiography of …

A Critique Of The Modern Consensus In The Historiography Of Mathematics, Viktor Blåsjö Jul 2014

A Critique Of The Modern Consensus In The Historiography Of Mathematics, Viktor Blåsjö

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The history of mathematics is nowadays practiced primarily by professional historians rather than mathematicians, as was the norm a few decades ago. There is a strong consensus among these historians that the old-fashioned style of history is “obsolete,” and that “the gains in historical understanding are incomparably greater” in the more “historically sensitive” works of today. I maintain that this self-congratulatory attitude is ill-founded, and that the alleged superiority of modern historiographical standards ultimately rests on a dubious redefinition of the purpose of history rather than intrinsic merit.

Joining ``The Mathematician's Delirium To The Poet's Logic'': Mathematical Literature And Literary Mathematics, Rita Capezzi, Christine Kinsey

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This paper describes our team-taught interdisciplinary mathematics and literature course, Mathematical Literature and Literary Mathematics, which invites students to consider Raymond Queneau's challenge: "Why shouldn't one demand a certain effort on the reader's part? Everything is always explained to him. He must eventually tire of being treated with such contempt.'' We study works by Berge, Borges, Calvino, Perec, Queneau, Robbe-Grillet and Stoppard, among others. From a literary critical perspective, the course highlights the play of language rather than the primacy of meaning. We choose texts where mathematical concepts are subjects or structuring elements of the literature, and ideally both. …

How The Postmodern Literary Theories Entered China And Inserted Influences?, Liyuan Zhu Jul 2014

How The Postmodern Literary Theories Entered China And Inserted Influences?, Liyuan Zhu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This article reviews and examines the five stages during which postmodern literary theory currents gradually entered China and exerted influences since the 1980s. With a significant amount of empirical evidence, the paper demonstrates that the influences of the Western postmodernism filtered slowly through the field of Chinese literary theory in the process during which Chinese theoretical circle did not unreservedly embrace the theories but accepted the influences through borrowing and assimilation, refutation and criticism. The paper takes the essentialist way of thinking as an example and expounds the characteristics of the positive and negative impacts which the postmodern literary theories …

Ecolinguistics And The Foundational Construction Of Language Theory For Contemporary Ecological Literary And Cultural Studies, Kuiying Zhao Jul 2014

Ecolinguistics And The Foundational Construction Of Language Theory For Contemporary Ecological Literary And Cultural Studies, Kuiying Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Language research is closely related with eco literature and cultural studies, while a dilema in the study of eco literature and cultural theory is the need for a proper linguistic theory as its foundation. Ecolinguistics emphasizes the two-way interactions both between language and environment and between language and the world, and takes language as the intermedia between nature and culture, and put the environment of language into the complexity of nature, socity and psychological elements. Therefore, ecolinguisitics can transcend the one-way determinism between the world and language on the one hand and the either-or dualism of the naturalness and artbitrariniess …

Shih-Hsiang Chen's Theory On Chinese Lyrical Tradition And Its Limitation, Cheng Xu Jul 2014

Shih-Hsiang Chen's Theory On Chinese Lyrical Tradition And Its Limitation, Cheng Xu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Shih-hsiang Chen, deeply affected by the revolution of modern Chinese literature, conceived a theory on Chinese lyrical tradition, which took as its standard the ideal of Western Romantic literature and rendered ancient Chinese literature to be monistic. At the present vantage position, the method Shih-hsiang Chen's adopted to study comparative literature was to use Western principles in Chinese literature, which, due to its dominant monistic discourse, concealed the complexity of Chinese literature. While his study might have promoted the academic interest in the West, it was basically an early effort to establish the discipline of comparative literature in China. Therefore, …

The Possibilities And Paths Of Art History, Yichuan Wang Jul 2014

The Possibilities And Paths Of Art History, Yichuan Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Art history has been under question and is now in urgent need for explorations of its possibilities and paths. As the discipline of art history has been established and in continuous operation, the academic domain and possibilities of art history will be gradually opened, and along with these developments, the discipline of Chinese art history is also opening its possibilities and path, given the fact art historians are actively opening up and expanding art history. A multiplanar framework of art history research can be constructed to include the history of a uni-modal art in the universal perspective, the comparative history …

The Value Re-Establishment Of Modern Chinese Literature And The Reconfiguration Of Literary History Since The 1980s And Overseas Chinese Studies, Yi Huang Jul 2014

The Value Re-Establishment Of Modern Chinese Literature And The Reconfiguration Of Literary History Since The 1980s And Overseas Chinese Studies, Yi Huang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Since 1980s, the influence of overseas Chinese studies has been significant in the value re-establishment of Chinese modern literature and the reconfiguration of the liteary history, which has helped to form an important line for literary history narrative, especially in the transmission of literay values and the remodelling of canons, the explorations into modernities and the promotion of the great literary history, and the re-finding of new literary tradition. Needless to say, the limitations and biases of overseas Chinese studies also showed in this process. The proposition of "the literature of the Republic of China" in recent years is in …

Wang Yuanhua's Concept Of Ideology-Academics As Social Remedy And Its Implications To Intellectual History, Chengwan Lao, Guoqiao Lan Jul 2014

Wang Yuanhua's Concept Of Ideology-Academics As Social Remedy And Its Implications To Intellectual History, Chengwan Lao, Guoqiao Lan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Wan Yuanhua (1920-2008) believed that academic research and ideology should be integrated with each other, and this idea of ideology-academics integration is Wang's preposition to redress the social maladies. Although his idea has not found fervent echoes in the academic circle, the paper claims that his idea could not be ignored during the development of our cultural intellectual history and can be done full justice by scholars who have investigated the origin, trajectory and outcome of his idea. What worried Wan Yuanhua was the spiritual rootlessness shown in the cynicalness toward and mindless challenge of serious academic pursuit. Wang Yuanhua's …

Ye Shi's Distinction Between Discourse And Literariness And His Concept Of Literary History, Qingcai Guo Jul 2014

Ye Shi's Distinction Between Discourse And Literariness And His Concept Of Literary History, Qingcai Guo

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Ye Shi (1150-1223) was erudite in Confucian classics, historiography and literature equally, with an awareness of the fundamental commensurability between them, believing that their division was resulted from the split of "yan (discourse)". Discourse was epitomized in the language use in the Three Dynasties, with the nature of political practice. Literariness flourished after the Han Dynasty, gradually becoming trivial rhetorical strategies. In general, the attentions to "literariness" and to political culture were reciprocally causal. Ye Shi advocated the idea of "pursuing 'The Tao (Logos)' by tracing 'discourse'," that is, reconstructing the Tao governance through re-interpreting the Five Classics. For him, …
