The Poetics Of Talk In Robert Louis Stevenson’S Treasure Island, Amy Wong

This essay considers the relationship between Robert Louis Stevenson’s well-loved adventure classic Treasure Island and his philosophical commitments to talk. For Stevenson, talking and adventuring share an experiential poetics that emphasizes responsiveness to unpredictable interactions. By examining several of Stevenson’s prose pieces, including “Talk and Talkers” and “My First Book” as well as Treasure Island, this essay argues that the novel aspires to translate the poetics of talk into a print medium. Treasure Island imagines itself as a form of “living print,” a work that, like Long John Silver’s parrot, seems more dynamic than print typically is, yet is …

The model of the interactions between scientific activities and values (M-CV) provides tools to criticize the scientific activities that are currently predominant in scientific institutions, and to identify some alternative possibilities for research that are not receiving due recognition in them. Most importantly, M-CV helps us to identify a deep incoherence in the common self-interpretation of the modern scientific tradition, and also to recognize that there are available two competing coherent interpretations - 'commercially oriented technoscience' and 'multi-strategy research' - that maintain continuity with the great cognitive successes of modern science.

This dissertation looks at the details of Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of the revaluation of all values. The dissertation will look at the idea in several ways to elucidate the depth and complexity of the idea. First, it will be looked at through its evolution, as it began as an idea early in Nietzsche's career and reached its full complexity at the end of his career with the planned publication of his Revaluation of All Values, just before the onset of his madness. In the past few decades, web technologies and increasingly accessible digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printers and laser cutters have made it easier for individuals and communities to create complex material objects at home. As a result, communities of individuals who make things outside formal institutions, known as maker communities, have combined traditional crafts and technical knowledge with digital tools and web technologies in new ways. Pourtraits divers is an unusual book of illustrations, printed in octavo format in the Lyonnais workshop of Jean de Tournes. A first edition contains no text apart from the place of publication, printer and date (Lyon: Jean de Tournes, 1556). A second edition (1557) also bears the title Pourtraits divers. The work in question is a collaborative project between printer Jean de Tournes and illustrator Bernard Salomon (aka Le Petit Bernard), both noted figures in the print culture of Renaissance Lyon. Christ As Chrism, Christ Given Away, Anna Mercedes

This article develops the concept of Christ not as static body but as chrism for bodies. Christ as chrism travels in the matrix of relationality, on a vector toward the benefit of others. Conceptualizing christ as chrism potentially avoids both exclusionary and colonizing tendencies in Christian polity, and frames a Christian ethics that, while vulnerable and risky, marks the sanctity of the one giving Christ away.

Chinese Undergraduate Students’ Preference For Chinese Tas And American Tas In The U.S. Context, Ruochen Li

This study researches and compares Chinese undergraduate students' (N=70) perceptions of and preferences for American TAs and Chinese TAs, and identifies factors that play significant roles in influencing Chinese students' perceptions and preferences. Multiple independent variables were measured, including age; gender; years at Purdue; years in the U.S.; GPA; overall TOEFL score; experiences with Chinese TAs; effectiveness of Chinese TAs; effectiveness of American TAs; English ability of Chinese TAs; and native speaker preference, ethnic identity, and level of acculturation, among which ethnic identity and level of acculturation are the major variables the current study aims to examine. The attempt to use later sources, interpreted in ways that are at best open to dispute, in an attempt to argue against what generations of skeptical scholars have concluded to be likely with respect to the early Christian sources, is never going to make mythicism seem more probable than the hard-earned and intensely-researched consensus of historians and scholars, namely that there was a historical Jesus of Nazareth.
