On Sport and Society

There are many terrific and zany baseball quotations that make there way across the nation at this time of year. Between Dizzy Dean, Yogi Berra, and Phil Rizzuto almost all aspects of the game were covered. Broadcasters too have added to the diamond lexicon. My favorite, however, comes from the former pitcher for the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals, the incomparable Joaquin Andujar whose most memorable line covers nearly all of the possibilities of the game.

The Everyday As Involved In War, Tammy M. Proctor

This essay examines how the "everyday" functions in war, not only for those on the home fronts, but for those in combat roles and for those living between the lines. Five important qualities, among others, shape the everyday in World War I: Waiting, Staying Connected, Food and Shelter, Managing Fear, and Camaraderie. Each of these themes plays out at the homes of those left behind, in the camps of civilian and military prisoners, in occupied zones, and at the fronts.

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

For such a young man, William Henry “Lebbie” Lebkicher (Company D, 122nd Regiment PA Volunteers) appears in his Civil War Era letters as a keen observer of society. Curiously, he rarely spoke of the larger war or even his friends from the regiment. The few people he alluded to are family members or family friends, mostly in discussion of their well-being. The letters are more a collection of observations on his experiences than a series of back-and-forth conversations with his father. His thoughts are insightful and fairly objective. [excerpt]

This paper is a report of a collaborative research project that identified the competencies undergraduate history majors should have related to finding and using archival materials. The boundary-spanning collaboration involved archivists, librarians, and history faculty.

Historians have long relied upon archives as essential source material, and recent studies confirmed the continued significance of archives to research in this field. However, there is no detailed listing of the archival research competencies that college history students should attain. Without a clearly defined list upon which history faculty, archivists, and library liaisons to history departments agree, teaching about archives research is difficult and …

Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) have inhabited the southern Great Basin for thousands of years, and consider Nuvagantu (where snow sits) in the Spring Mountains landscape to be the locus of their creation as a people. Their ancestral territory spans parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California. My research identifies and describes the heterogeneous character of Nuwuvi ecological knowledge (NEK) of piñon-juniper woodland ecosystems within two federal protected areas (PAs) in southeastern Nevada, the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNRA) and the Desert National Wildlife Refuge (DNWR), as remembered and practiced to varying degrees by 22 select Nuwuvi knowledge holders. The minutes of the Caverna (later Horse Cave), Kentucky Board of Trustees from 1871 to 1892. Full text of the minutes, in 50-page increments, can be seen by clicking on "Additional Files" below. The community was known as Horse Cave, but changed its name to Caverna in 1869 and later changed its name back to Horse Cave in 1880. Stray material was scanned where it was found in the minute book; blank pages were not scanned. Game Design And The Writing Process: Designing The Board Game Lineage: 1434, Bradley Isaac Sims

This thesis details the design and production of Lineage: 1434, a board game based on building a family dynasty similar to the Medici family of 15th century Italy. From the initial idea of creating a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game to reimaging the game as a board game, this project draws on multiple influences like Carcassonne (Wrede, 2000), Settlers of Catan (Teuber, 1995), Agricola (Rosenberg, 2008), and Edgebee Game's Swords & Potions (2011) and Critter Forge (2010). Game design decisions were driven in part by the flaws in existing games, including the problems of resource scarcity in pay-to-play MMO games, …

This project is an intertextual study of the theoretical projects of Kenneth Burke and Michel Foucault. It outlines their relationship in terms of points of cohesion and points of departure in their works. The similarities and differences between the projects of Burke and Foucault is described in terms of the relationship between language, knowledge, power, and society, then described in terms of the dichotomy of Reduction and Expansion. This dichotomy gives us a starting point from which to outline the commonalities and differences between these authors' projects. The Legacy Of Alexander Bain, Stephen Lindsay Satterfield

Theses and Dissertations

Alexander Bain's key works are reviewed once again from a rhetorical and historical perspective. Bain was a Scottish empiricist who lived during the Industrial Revolution and contributed to rhetoric, psychology, education, and logic. Bain's emphasis on contiguity, modes of discourse, and grammar are explained. A brief Bain biography is provided along with Bain's interactions with notable friends. Researching Bain again from an interdisciplinary perspective is undertaken to avoid the usual problems with simply repeating prior academic findings and set opinions. However, the way in which Bain was accepted and then discredited is also discussed.
