Getting To The Stories: Research On Participant Perceptions Of Race- And Equity-Focused Professional Development, Kehaulani Haupu

This qualitative research study explored participant perceptions of district-sponsored race-and equity-focused professional development, specifically as it applies to racial consciousness. This study utilizes Singleton’s (2006) Courageous Conversations About Race (CCAR) Protocol to examine participant perceptions of district race-and equity-focused professional development and its impact personally, professionally, and as members of an organization engaged in ongoing conversations about race and equity. Results showed that participants perceived a change in their racial consciousness as a result of participation in the district’s ongoing race-and equity-focused professional development. Traditional Ecological Knowledge: A Model For Modern Fire Management?, Gail Wells

For many thousands of years, aboriginal peoples worldwide used fire to manage landscapes. In North America, the frequency and extent of fire (both human caused and natural) were much reduced after European colonization. Fire exclusion became the policy in the United States for most of the 20th century as the country became more settled and industrialized. Past fire exclusion has helped produce landscapes that are highly susceptible to uncharacteristically severe wildfire. An urgent challenge for land managers today is to reduce fire risk through several means, including prescribed burning, without harm to culturally significant resources or human communities. I'm interested in how one goes about integrating digital tools into the liberal arts, and my perspective is that of a long-time faculty member in a small department at a small school. The common wisdom is that today's students know and can do more than most faculty in all things digital, and we need merely provide opportunities for them to use those skills. Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies

Introduction: This study examines three data sets from the recently released American Community Survey (ACS) of 2013 to estimate the population sizes of the largest Latino national sub groups in New York City and in the City’s surrounding counties.

Methods: Data on Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, reorganized for public use by the Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota, IPUMSusa. Cases in the dataset were weighted and analyzed to produce population estimates.

The United States is facing a continuous increase in the amount of refugees seeking refuge in the States. This continuous increase places a strain on the current education system that is underequipped to handle an influx of students with very special and unique needs. This thesis discusses these needs and one method of addressing these needs in a way beneficial to refugee students. The method involves traditional storytelling in refugee family's homes being used in the classroom. This method was put into practice into a classroom without any refugee students and is also discussed in this thesis.

Political changes in Yugoslavia in the 1990s triggered a series of changes in the ethno-religious field. The ethnological problems faced by the residents of Bosnia formed part of more general ethnological reshuffling in former Yugoslavia, promoting idealized nations, non-existent ethnic ideologies and fabricated state designs. However, these nations already constitute part of the reshuffling of the reform of New Europe. A major part was played in the formulation of the ethnic identity of Bosnian Muslims by the Islamic Community, under unique conditions and in cooperation with the Communist Yugoslavia of Josip Broz Tito from 1945 to 1990. In this chapter I propose a preliminary response to the transhumanist challenge to natural law by investigating six basic questions: ( 1) Is human nature relevant to morality? (2) Is human nature mutable? (3) How would we know if human nature had changed? ( 4) Could cultural evolution replace biological evolution? (5) How would human nature and human will relate to each other under these new transhuman conditions? (6) Is it possible to construct a dynamic ethic to fit a dynamic nature, and if so, what might that ethic be?

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Over the past centuries Bulgarian people experienced severe religious and ethnic threats due to which they have developed defense mechanisms and a strong sense of sympathy for persecuted ethnic and social groups. In recent history, this reflex was manifested most clearly in the behavior of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in defense of the Bulgarian Jews. At the same time two other events, however, reveal its controversial image that caused it a severe damage. In recent years, many Bulgarians are seeking the moral dimensions of these phenomena that influence the spirituality and morality of the younger generations.
