People Of The Apokalis’: Spatial Disability And The Bhopal Disaster, Jina B. Kim Jan 2014

People Of The Apokalis’: Spatial Disability And The Bhopal Disaster, Jina B. Kim

English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications

This paper considers Indra Sinha's Animal's People (2007), a fictional re-telling of the Union Carbide Bhopal disaster, as a productive site of mutual engagement between postcolonial studies and disability studies, two fields rarely in dialogue. Dominant models of disability, I argue, do not translate to formerly colonial sites and/or sites that bear the burden of global capitalism. The uneven processes of globalization—which produce disabling environments—necessitate that we revise established conceptions of disability, which are derived largely from US/UK contexts. I explore a socio-spatial model that emphasizes the necessity of specific locational axes in figurations of disability. This enables more flexible …

Scientific Research, Technological Innovation And The Agenda Of Social Justice, Democratic Participation And Sustainability, Hugh Lacey Jan 2014

Scientific Research, Technological Innovation And The Agenda Of Social Justice, Democratic Participation And Sustainability, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

Modern science, whose methodologies give special privilege to using decontextualizing strategies and downplay the role of context-sensitive strategies, have been extraordinarily successful in producing knowledge whose applications have transformed the shape of the lifeworld. Nevertheless, I argue that how the mainstream of the modern scientific tradition interprets the nature and objectives of science is incoherent; and that today there are two competing interpretations of scientific activities that are coherent and that maintain continuity with the success of the tradition: "commercially-oriented technoscience" (CT) and "multi-strategy research" (MS). The greater part of this article is devoted to discussing what is involved in …

Teaching As Formation: The Vision Of Ephesians 4:11-16 And Pedagogical Implications For Routine Teaching Tasks, Joy Ames

The Asbury Journal

This paper seeks to incorporate the vision of teaching in Ephesians 4:11-16 into an understanding of theological education that involves the holistic formation of students. First, a brief exegetical study of Ephesians 4:11-16 is presented in order to accentuate its vision for teaching as formation. Secondly, the task of grading is viewed as a major opportunity for student formation. Thirdly, an emphasis is placed on hearing the voice of the text for today in the task of teaching the text- based exegetical course.

Influence Of Popular Television Programming On Students’ Perception About Course Selection, Major, And Career, Kristy Tucciarone Jan 2014

Influence Of Popular Television Programming On Students’ Perception About Course Selection, Major, And Career, Kristy Tucciarone

Faculty Scholarship

This study explores the ways in which television programming influences undergraduate students’ perceptions of careers in advertising and related fields. Drawing on cultivation theory, the research examines how repeated exposure to television portrayals of professional life can shape expectations and decision-making about college majors and career paths. The analysis focuses on two series—Mad Men and Trust Me—which depict advertising professionals in contrasting but influential ways.

Using a focus group methodology, the study engaged undergraduate students enrolled in advertising and communication-related courses. Participants were asked to discuss their viewing experiences, perceptions of advertising careers as presented on television, and …

Leave Creation To The Creator: The Corrupt Creator In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Faith Borland '17 Jan 2014

Leave Creation To The Creator: The Corrupt Creator In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Faith Borland '17

Outstanding Gateway Papers

My paper discusses the impact that Mary Shelley’s theistic views and the science of her time had on the writing of Frankenstein. Her Christian ideals helped her to shape the character of Victor and play out the consequences of his actions. She discusses many questions about the human soul and the afterlife in her novel. Using writings from her diary, it is clear that Shelley was a very dedicated Christian and believed absolutely in the presence of an eternal soul. A large theme in the story is the question of whether or not the Creature has a soul and, …

Goddard Bookcase And Desk, Risd Museum, Robert Emlen, Timothy Philbrick Jan 2014

Goddard Bookcase And Desk, Risd Museum, Robert Emlen, Timothy Philbrick

Channel

This lustrous mahogany desk and bookcase represents a pinnacle of achievement for American cabinetmakers. One of nine known examples, this block-front desk and book-case with six carved shells is associated with the Goddard/Townsend family of cabinetmakers in Newport. The desk exemplifies their superb craftsmanship in the delicate dovetailed construction of the drawers. Their mastery of proportions is evident in the piece’s well-balanced broken-scroll pediment, alternating convex and concave surfaces, and integrated flame finials. In a Rhode Island house of the period, the desk and bookcase was the most expensive piece of case furniture. A combination office, safe, and library, it …

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

This article describes a feminist community-based research project involving faculty and student collaboration to evaluate a dating and domestic violence awareness initiative. Using a critical ethics of care that emphasizes relationships and allows for constant reflection about power dynamics, role, positionality, and emotions, the authors reflect on what was learned during the research process. Faculty and student researchers share their perspectives and offer suggestions for future feminist collaborative research projects. Significant lessons learned include ensuring that all are invested from the outset of the project, guaranteeing that student researchers understand why their role is so critical in community-based research, and …

Teaching Against Hierarchies: An Anarchist Approach, Stephanie Spoto Jan 2014

Teaching Against Hierarchies: An Anarchist Approach, Stephanie Spoto

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

The state of California spends more on prisons than on colleges and universities, and the fact that these two budgetary figures are often compared shows the relationship between the two state institutions. Our classrooms, starting from a very early stage, not only prepare children to be productive members of the consumer economy but educate them for complacency in the face of state violence and mass incarceration. In attempting to move away from hierarchical models of education, this article looks at the feminist pedagogical theory of bell hooks and antiauthoritarian and anarchist theorists such as Jacques Rancière and Derrick Jensen in …

Coast Salish Spinning: Looking For Twist, Finding Change, Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa Jan 2014

Coast Salish Spinning: Looking For Twist, Finding Change, Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Coast Salish textiles from the Pacific Northwest (northwest Washington state and southwest British Columbia) are relatively rare and unknown yet are masterpieces of sophisticated weaving and spinning techniques. Coast Salish blankets and robes, and the tools used to make them, have been the subjects of a few seminal works (Gustafson 1980; Loughran-Delahunt 1996; Marr 1979; Vanderburg 1953), but other than the occasional recording of the direction of twist, the spinning characteristics of the yarn itself have not been the focus of research. This gap is curious, given the uniqueness of Coast Salish spinning tools, the corresponding techniques, and the fibres …

Dressing The Leader, Dressing The Ancestor: The Longue Durée In The South Central Andes, Ann H. Peters Jan 2014

Dressing The Leader, Dressing The Ancestor: The Longue Durée In The South Central Andes, Ann H. Peters

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The preservation and adornment of the dead in the South Central Andes can be traced over some twelve thousand years. The potential for preservation of human bodies and fine textiles in desert sands and high altitude caves contributed to a continuing social and political role of the dead in the lives of the living. Colonial period documents describe well-dressed mortuary bundles that participated in public ritual and could be cited as proof of heritage and validation of social leadership. However, the nature of social and political ancestry and its relationship to power change over time with the development of large-scale …
