Know Yourself And You Will Be Known: The Gospel Of Thomas And Middle Platonism, Seth A. Clark
Know Yourself And You Will Be Known: The Gospel Of Thomas And Middle Platonism, Seth A. Clark
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of 114 sayings attributed to Jesus and is primarily composed of rhetorical statements that were used to preserve the teachings of itinerant Greek philosophers. These collections were used to persuade individuals to join the philosophical schools represented, much like the early followers of the Jesus movement would use his teachings to convince others to join them as well. However, the theological background for the text is still debated because it contains esoteric and enigmatic references not fully understood by most scholars. This work argues that the theological and philosophical background for the Gospel …

Indigenous communities in Canada share a common history of colonial oppression. As a result, many Indigenous populations are disproportionately burdened with poor health outcomes, including HIV. Conventional public health approaches have not yet been successful in reversing this trend. For this study, a team of community- and university-based researchers came together to imagine new possibilities for health promotion with Indigenous youth. A strengths-based approach was taken that relied on using the energies and talents of Indigenous youth as a leadership resource. Art-making workshops were held in six different Indigenous communities across Canada in which youth could explore the links between …

Causality In La Mort Le Roi Artu: Free Will, Accident, And Moral Failure, David S. King
Causality In La Mort Le Roi Artu: Free Will, Accident, And Moral Failure, David S. King
Quidditas
The thirteenth-century French La Mort le Roi Artu indicates forthrightly how the Arthurian world comes to an end, but the text leaves less clear what motivates the disaster. Many critics attribute the cause to an external force, God or the goddess Fortune, that obliges Arthur and others to pursue their own destruction. A few offer greater insight into the nature of causality in the romance. They see the characters as exercising some degree of free will or even complete liberty. But these critics err in alienating the notion of free choice from moral concerns. In their reading, the heroes suffer …
The Intersection Of Music Philosophy, Performance And Genre In The Middle English Breton Lay Sir Orfeo, Lisa Myers
The Intersection Of Music Philosophy, Performance And Genre In The Middle English Breton Lay Sir Orfeo, Lisa Myers
Quidditas
The Middle English romance Sir Orfeo is a dynamic and creative retelling of the classical Orpheus myth in which the wife of the English king, Orfeo, is abducted by fairies but eventually restored to her position and husband through Orfeo’s musical prowess. While any retelling of the Orpheus myth would necessarily contain references to music and would, therefore, likely use music as an important cue within the text, the poet of Sir Orfeo displays a sophisticated understanding of musical philosophy, composition and performance, as well as the Breton lay genre. The intersection of these elements all work together not only …

Applied Theater: Giving Voice To Low-Income Teenage Immigrants Through Theater, Nadia S. Garzon
Applied Theater: Giving Voice To Low-Income Teenage Immigrants Through Theater, Nadia S. Garzon
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
In the United States, immigration is feared, criticized, and highly misunderstood. The current immigration debate relies on, and reinforces, anti-immigrant myths. This rhetoric negatively impacts the lives of immigrants, especially that of the 11.7 million undocumented immigrants who currently live in the United States. The first chapter of this paper talks about some of the myths associated with immigration, the situation of many immigrants, and some of the root causes of immigration, including the role of the United States. The second chapter describes Augusto Boal’s life and his Theater of the Oppressed. The third chapter describes the process, challenges, and …
Unveiling The Veil: Debunking The Stereotypes Of Muslim Women, Jennifer Sands
Unveiling The Veil: Debunking The Stereotypes Of Muslim Women, Jennifer Sands
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
It is not unusual for people to express prejudices against others who look or act differently than the predominant culture. Regrettably, Muslim women are not excluded from this behavior. One of the outward observations of the Islamic religion is the hijab, a veil that covers the head, neck, and chest. Muslim women wear the hijab or similar covering by choice, as it reminds them of the modesty that Islam requires. Yet, this symbol of modesty is often attacked and tainted, leaving many outsiders to question the women who wear the veil and their Islamic culture. In this thesis, I explored …
The Role Of The Artist As A Social Critic: As Interpreted Through The Art Of Swoon, Allora & Calzadilla, And Ai Wei Wei, Jessica A. Hasara
The Role Of The Artist As A Social Critic: As Interpreted Through The Art Of Swoon, Allora & Calzadilla, And Ai Wei Wei, Jessica A. Hasara
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Abstract: This thesis argues that the artists Swoon, Allora & Calzadilla, and Ai Weiwei rep-resent three approaches to contemporary art drawing on the traditions of street art, performance art, and conceptual art to change our expectations of art, public space, and civil disobedience, challenging the limits of what we know as social criticism and building community. These new and lively ways of making art can be viewed in association with systems of thought like Danto’s work which pro-poses a redefined way of looking at art; and Dewey’s work which emphasizes the importance of an aesthetic experience as a way of …
Precursors And Processes For The Growth Of Metallic First Row Transition Metal Films By Atomic Layer Deposition, Lakmal Charidu Kalutarage
Precursors And Processes For The Growth Of Metallic First Row Transition Metal Films By Atomic Layer Deposition, Lakmal Charidu Kalutarage
Wayne State University Dissertations
As a result of the continuous miniaturization of microelectronics devices, atomic layer deposition (ALD) has gained much attention in the recent years. ALD allows the deposition of ultra-thin conformal films with accurate thickness control due to the self-limiting growth mechanism. The microelectronics industry requires the growth of metallic first row transition metal films by ALD. Due to the positive electrochemical potentials, the ALD growth of noble metal thin films has been well developed in the past. By contrast, the ALD growth of first row transition metal films remains poorly documented. The reasons for this scarcity include the lack of suitable …
Models Of Faith And Learning In Theatre At Colleges And Universities Affiliated With Churches Of Christ: Selected Case Studies, Catherine Louise Parker
Models Of Faith And Learning In Theatre At Colleges And Universities Affiliated With Churches Of Christ: Selected Case Studies, Catherine Louise Parker
Wayne State University Dissertations
The Churches of Christ, a body of Christian believers descending from the nineteenth century American Restoration Movement, have a well-documented history of establishing and supporting liberal arts colleges and universities. This study of theatre programs at three of these institutions--Lipscomb University, Pepperdine University, and York College--examines the model of faith and learning operating at each school and in its respective theatre department. This study utilizes a mixed-methods approach combining a multiple case study with a self-administered Likert-scale questionnaire, illuminating the ways that the schools describe their model of faith and learning, the ways that the theatre departments at the schools …

Spheres Of Semi-Legality: Discourse, Media And Informal Economic Practices In St. Petersburg, Russia (2000-Present), Maria Rosaria Roti
Wayne State University Dissertations
My dissertation project focuses on how the post-Yeltsin (2000 onwards) market economy actually works and how people define, identify and engage within this newly structured market economy. In order to understand this phenomenon my ethnographic study focuses on business in Russia from two perspectives. First, it discusses how Russian enterprises operate in Russia with the socially embedded informal economic practices inherited from the Soviet system, including trust, personal networks, patron-client relationships, system avoidance, bribery, and corruption. Second, it examines how foreign firms operate under these existing economic conditions in Russia while simultaneously still following FTC regulations and international law. Keeping …

Subjugated Bodies, Normalized Subjects: Representations Of Power In The Panamanian Literature Of Roberto Díaz Herrera, Rose Marie Tapia And Mauro Zúñiga Araúz, Sara Escobar-Wiercinski
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation examines the dissemination of power represented in the works of Panamanian writers Roberto Díaz Herrera, Rose Marie Tapia and Mauro Zúñiga Araúz. My work focuses on two important periods in Panama's history: the repressive dictatorial era of Manuel Noriega and the post-dictatorial era during which subjugation and power operate in subtle ways, through institutions, mechanisms of civil society, and globalization. The primary sources are Díaz Herrera's testimony, and the novels of Tapia and Zúñiga Araúz. In my analysis, I draw upon the notions of power, subjugation and normalization developed by the French philosoher Michel Foucault. I also draw …

December 2014
Advisor: Dr. Francisco Javier Higuero
Major: Modern Languages (Spanish)
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
This dissertation explores the development of the characters in particular plays and poems of Spanish writer Federico García Lorca. The main theory that is applied in the analysis is that of Habitus, which was greatly elaborated upon by French philosopher Pierre Bourdieu. The first chapter discusses the character development of the women in the rural trilogy which includes the plays Yerma, Bodas de sangre and La casa de Bernarda …

The percentage of German immigrants in Argentina, measured by the total population of the country, never exceeded the 2% threshold, but their integration took many different forms. ' This was already proven by the 2008 colloquium in Buenos Aires on the subject "La inserci6n de la minoria alemana en Argentina entre 1900 y 1933" (published in 2008 as Volume IV of the Anuario Argentino de Germanfstica). Even this colloquium, which does not commit itself to any period of time, will further broaden the integration therna. What makes the writer Robert {o) Schopflocher interesting in this context is an incorporation in …

Citing ‘Whatever’ Authority: The Ethics Of Quotation In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
Citing ‘Whatever’ Authority: The Ethics Of Quotation In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This paper seeks to lay out an analysis of Giorgio Agamben’s central claims with regard to the formation of a theory of citationality. By juxtaposing Walter Benjamin’s theory of citations alongside his more recent, critical engagements with the western theological tradition, Agamben sets himself the goal of redefining ethics along Levinasian lines in order to arrive at a respect for the face of ‘whatever’ being before us, the true source toward which all citations point.

The Problem Of Having Both A Body And A Name In The Work Of Jean-Luc Marion: Names, Fathers And The Hopeful Possibilities Of A Queer Phenomenology, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In this essay, and following upon both Jacques Lacan’s and Jacques Derrida’s personal struggles with fatherhood and the naming of their children, I take up what I consider to be Jean-Luc Marion’s failure to deal with the embodiment of fatherhood through an examination of patriarchal signification, or, specifically, the naming of one’s children after the father—at least insofar as Marion’s brief analysis of this symbolic act points toward his failure to think through the various potential and lived embodiments of the father. I aim to illuminate how his efforts to continue this naming of the child with the father’s name …
Searching For A Self-Reflexive Theology: Ways Forward For Systematic Theology In Relation To (Non) Religious Thought In Contemporary Western Culture, Colby Dickinson
Searching For A Self-Reflexive Theology: Ways Forward For Systematic Theology In Relation To (Non) Religious Thought In Contemporary Western Culture, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article aims to draw attention, first, to the need to explore the inner plurality of theological discourse, as such plural discourses serve to promote a certain dynamism and fullness within theology as a field, especially in relation to religious studies today. Second, such a potential fullness is reflected in the modern struggle to characterize the relationship between faith and reason. Comprehending the misunderstandings, often construed as an impasse between faith and reason, could foster new relations between scientific methods and theological imaginations. Third, understanding these tensions from a systematic theological perspective also entails a more precise analysis of the …
Business And Merchants Will Not Enter The Places Of My Father: Early Christianity And Market Mentality, Edmondo Lupieri
Business And Merchants Will Not Enter The Places Of My Father: Early Christianity And Market Mentality, Edmondo Lupieri
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
At the time of the redaction of the New Testament (NT), the relatively newly constituted Roman Empire seems to have brought some sort of political uniformity to the whole Mediterranean world. This phenomenon must have had some kind of financial repercussions due to a more centralized administration and a relatively larger diffusion of a standardized monetary system. Can we understand if this had any impact on the preaching of (the historical) Jesus? Did his early followers have the memory of any teaching of his regarding money, its possession or its use? And, in the times and areas they were living …

The Profanation Of Revelation: On Language And Immanence In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
The Profanation Of Revelation: On Language And Immanence In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay seeks to articulate the many implications which Giorgio Agamben’s work holds for theology. It aims therefore to examine his (re)conceptualizations of language, in light of particular historical glosses on the ‘name of God’ and the nature of the ‘mystical’, as well as to highlight the political task of profanation, one of his most central concepts, in relation to the logos said to embody humanity’s ‘religious’ quest to find its Voice. As such, we see how he challenges those standard (ontotheological) notions of transcendence which have been consistently aligned with various historical forms of sovereignty. In addition, I intend …

Are The Only True Atheists Actually Theologians?, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Contemporary continental European philosophy circulates around particular apocalyptic themes, offering new insights and suggestive proposals for theology to think through the implications of this often most difficult of religious subjects. As such philosophies manoeuvre to define apocalyptic through its return to questions of antinomian thought, of the 'interruption' of normative religious imagery, and of the negation of our most cherished theological representations (including our representations of God and the Law), we constantly find these philosophers engaged with the most basic foundations of Western religious history. From its inception, apocalyptic has been a genre of literature, and more generally of religious …

Developing Information Literacy Skills For Tomorrow’S Music Industry Leaders, Keith Hatschek, Veronica Wells
Conservatory of Music Faculty Articles
What research skills should undergraduate music industry studies majors develop over the course of their studies? With the non-stop proliferation of news and information sources available, how are students being trained to do research appropriate to their field to make informed decisions? Some employers now screen for information literacy skills as a preferred qualification, due to the perception that recent graduates lack advanced research skills. This paper discusses one model of developing research skills that a future music industry leader will need. The authors show the collaboration between faculty and librarians that progressively teach students to find, access, evaluate, and …

In an address at the Twelfth International Congress of Papyrology in 1968, the late Naphtali Lewis famously rejected the terrn·”Greco-Roman", specifically as used in studies of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt. To support his position, one based, so he claimed, on substance not mere linguistic fussiness, he presented arguments against the then prevailing orthodoxy that the Roman replacement of the Ptolemies was characterized by ,essential continuity". Instead, according to Lewis, the changes wrought by the Romans were themselves ,more fundamental and sweeping" than previously thought. He returned to the same theme fifteen years later in Naples in his presidential address to …

Chasing The Writer, Joyce Wexler
Chasing The Writer, Joyce Wexler
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
"Why does the writing make us chase the writer?" Julian Barnes asks in Flaubert's Parrot. In the past, the answer was easy-we studied the writer to understand the writing. But Barnes suggests that now we study the writing to understand the writer. Barnes's interest in the writer marks a new direction in fiction and criticism.
