A Critical Examination Of Justin Ukpong's Inculturation Hermeneutics., Matthew Lanser
A Critical Examination Of Justin Ukpong's Inculturation Hermeneutics., Matthew Lanser
CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses
The interpretation of the Bible in Africa is a broad and rapidly developing field, and also one that has attracted relatively little attention in the academy. While Justin’s Ukpong’s theory and method of biblical interpretation has generated significant discussion in the field, this study offers the first broad, critical examination of the internal coherence of Ukpong’s inculturation hermeneutics and of its broader usefulness for the theory and practice of interpreting the Bible in Africa. I begin by describing the assumptions, method, and practice of Ukpong’s inculturation hermeneutics. I proceed by using Schreiter’s criteria for contextual theologies to evaluate the coherence …
Decay And Perversion In Jacksonian America: George Lippard’S The Quaker City, Keith Lydon
Decay And Perversion In Jacksonian America: George Lippard’S The Quaker City, Keith Lydon
Undergraduate Review
In the United States, the period between the termination of the 18th century and the commencement of the 19th century is characterized by the struggle to forge a national identity that was uniquely American in its independence from European influence. American writers of this period understood that the creation of an American literature distinct from the influence of Europe and shaped by the social, political, and natural environment of the United States would provide the country with the first vestiges of the autonomous cultural identity it so desperately desired. However, this work proved to be problematic, as with little financial …
The Experiences Of Transgender Students In Massachusetts’ Colleges And Universities, Kayla Spagna
The Experiences Of Transgender Students In Massachusetts’ Colleges And Universities, Kayla Spagna
Undergraduate Review
This research examines the experiences of transgender students attending four-year colleges or universities in Massachusetts. I pursued a series of qualitative interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the resources available to transgender students and to identify potential barriers to full integration on college campuses. Ten transgender students were interviewed; all were between the ages of 18 and 24 years. Data were coded using grounded theory and a constant comparative approach. Themes include: awareness, safety, college and university policies, and support by trans-inclusion through programs and policies. These findings highlight the importance of transgender-specific information and broader education for both …

Somos y Estamos
Welcome to our Somos y Estamos 2014 newsletter edition. The past year was marked by wonderful achievements on the part of our students, alumni, faculty and staff. It was a year of much gain, as we welcomed Dr. Mercedes Tubino Blanco to the department to teach linguistics and coordinate the 2000-2010 levels of basic Spanish (see the bio-sketch below for more information about her.) It was also a year of a significant loss with the passing of Dr. Carolyn Harris, our Somos y Estamos editor, last September. She left a lasting mark among all of us who knew her. In …

The Pit Bull's Discourse: An Examination Of Discursive Construction, Karen Jennings
The Pit Bull's Discourse: An Examination Of Discursive Construction, Karen Jennings
Bridges: A Journal of Student Research
Since the early 1980s, news reporters have used the pit bull as a scapegoat to get media attention by plastering the frightening image of a snarling, bloody dog across all news outlets. Over the years, the pit bull's image has suffered major blows to its already battered reputation with every new "dog attack" news story published. Each reporter's word choice, in both past and present news stories, has an effect on the reader's perception of the topic. By analyzing several unrelated stories about pit bulls, both good and bad, I reveal how word choice alone shapes a reader's perception while …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The historical novel, Cortes Cenquizqui, set in sixteenth century Mexico and Spain, follows the conflicted lives and minds of several characters through an age of freshly crossing culture, language, and power. The narrator, Maria de Quesada of high ranking Spanish and Mexica parents, resents the white world for condemning her work as a female healer or curandera. Yet she acknowledges that she is ill-equipped to leave Mexico City to live in the outlying Indigenous villages. Maria recalls the tale of her three brothers who were caught in a web of pride and prejudices. Her interjections throughout shed light on questions …

Tigers In The Trenches: The Clemson College Class Of 1917 In The First World War, Alan C. Grubb, Brock M. Lusk
Publications
Clemson University proudly proclaims that the Class of 1917 volunteered en-masse for service during the First World War, after President Woodrow Wilson sought a declaration of war from Congress in April 1917. A bullet stating the claim is the first on the Clemson Corps’ “Stories & Highlights inside the Scroll of Honor” web page,1 and the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) on campus trumpets this to incoming cadets. I personally remember hearing this as a young Cadet 4th Class from my ROTC instructor in 1998 and imaging the men who graduated sailing to Europe to serve beside one another in …
God’S Dominion: Omar Ibn Said Use Of Arabic Literacy As Opposition To Slavery, Akel Kahera
God’S Dominion: Omar Ibn Said Use Of Arabic Literacy As Opposition To Slavery, Akel Kahera
Publications
Omar ibn Said’s Th e Life of Omar Ibn Said, Written by Himself (1831) occupies a unique position within the slave narrative tradition. As the only surviving Arabic autobiography written by a slave from the United States, the Life juxtaposes a religious exegesis based on the textual authority of the Qur’an with a first-person account of Omar’s life. Only recently rediscovered, having been found in a trunk in a Virginia at-tic in 1995 and sold to a private collector after being lost since 1920, the manuscript has sparked renewed interest in writings by enslaved Muslims in America, and in particular …

Interfaith Dialogue And A Lotus Practitioner: Yamada Etai, The Lotus Sutra, And The Religious Summit Meeting On Mt. Hiei, Stephen G. Covell
Interfaith Dialogue And A Lotus Practitioner: Yamada Etai, The Lotus Sutra, And The Religious Summit Meeting On Mt. Hiei, Stephen G. Covell
Comparative Religion Publications
This article is an examination of Yamada Etai, the 253rd head priest (zasu) of the Tendai denomination and his efforts to host the Religious Summit Meeting on Mt. Hiei. Following an in-depth analysis of Yamada’s understanding of the Lotus Sutra, especially as it relates to interfaith outreach, Yamada’s efforts to reshape contemporary Tendai Buddhism through a focus on compassionate service and salvation are examined in light of his efforts to put on a large-scale international interfaith meeting.
Neoliberalism And Public University Agendas: Tensions Along The Global/Local Divide, Peter Wanyenya, Donna Lester-Smith
Neoliberalism And Public University Agendas: Tensions Along The Global/Local Divide, Peter Wanyenya, Donna Lester-Smith
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
Over the last decade, internationalization efforts have accelerated at leading postsecondary institutions in North America and elsewhere, with universities now aggressively competing for the most talented students worldwide. With the focus on recruiting international students, one of the major attendant objectives has seemingly been a social-justice-oriented agenda on tackling pressing global issues; the local has indeed become the global. However, not everyone is ostensibly benefiting from this new global focus. For some, their local issues and conditions are increasingly precarious and nonprioritized in institutional and broadening neoliberal governmental agendas. In the Canadian context, various Indigenous and low-income racialized communities, youth …

Beginning With The Body: Fleshy Politics In The Performance Art Of Rebecca Belmore And Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Samantha Balzer
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
This article examines what I term the "fleshy" politics of Rebecca Belmore's 2002 Vigil and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha's contributions to the 2009 version of the performance project Sins Invalid: An Unshamed Claim to Beauty in the Face of Invisibility. Focusing on the embodied performances of both Belmore and Piepzna-Samarasinha, I read the skin of the artist as a site where complex politics develop. This analysis is broken into three sections: the first considers the relationship between the performing body and the performance space; the second attends to specific movements each artist makes; the third focuses on garments worn in each …
