A Revolutionist's Loyalty Crisis And Its Dissolution: A Re-Reading Of Wang Meng'sBu Li, Dongfeng Tao

Wang Meng's novel Bu Li ("Bolshevistic Salute") is about the loyalty crisis of the protagonist Zhong Yicheng, a Chinese revolutionist. The terror of the loyalty crisis lies in that Zhong can never be an independent being but is totally attached to revolution itself. The faith of a revolutionist and the loyalty to Chinese Communist Party serve as the foundation of Zhong's identity, and his relation with revolution becomes the sole reason and meaning for his life as well as the guarantee for him to be a "human." In the international circles of comparative literature and literary theory, comparative poetics dealing with literary theory still occupies a position although elite literature and its theory are impacted by cultural studies. In this aspect, American comparatist Earl Miner's pioneering contribution should not be neglected. Although Miner was not the first to shift scholarly attention to the study of Eastern comparative literature and literary theory, it may be argued that his intercultural explorations into comparative poetics have surpassed his precursors or contemporaries like René étiemble, Douwe Fokkema and James Liu, entering the field of general literary and theoretical studies. Since the early 20th century, a somatic turn has presented itself as increasingly influential in the Western aesthetics. As the science of sensory recognition, it initiates a return to the body-subject and life-world. In this process, the contribution of pragmatism is prominent. Since Charles Peirce proposed the principle of practice, the perspective which values the body has been introduced. The endeavors of scholars like William James, John Dewey and Charles William Morris have all constructed the artistic-esthetic paradigm on the basis of body experience. Between 1957 and 1959, under the backdrop of the Central High School Crisis, the Arkansas General Assembly worked to evade compliance with the U.S. Supreme Court's 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision that outlawed segregation in public schools. The three legislative sessions passed laws that mostly sought to maintain segregated schools and limit the NAACP's ability to function in the state. However, religious leaders, parents, and the NAACP sough to have many of these laws overturned and tested their legality in court. The lawsuits were successful and by 1963, all the laws related to school desegregation and the NAAP …

Visual Fantasy Themes In The Ebony Fashion Fair (1963-1965): An Interdisciplinary Study, Brittany Estoria Blanton

Ernest G. Bormann's fantasy theme criticism and the media studies analysis were used to analyze and critique images from the Ebony Fashion Fair from 1963 - 1965. The importance of this fashion show was revealed during a time when the Civil Rights Movement was at its climax. The results concluded that John H. Johnson and Eunice Johnson, founders of Ebony magazine and the , challenged the prevailing social situation with their actions by showcasing positive images and experiences in Black and European communities.

During his lifetime, Thomas Waterman Wood (1823-1903) was one of America's most beloved genre painters. Since his death, very little has been published to document his career and great achievements. Although the exemplary production of his rural genre subjects is enough to demand further attention, an additional oversight is Wood's unique treatment of African American subjects. Painting during the Reconstruction era when the discourse concerning black citizenship was at its height, Wood created a series of works which portrayed African Americans in a positive light, silently advocating for their rights as U. In 1952, Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn appointed Arkansas Democrat Representative Ezekiel Candler "Took" Gathings to lead a select committee and investigate the potential effect of allegedly obscene literature on the morals of American society. The House Select Committee on Current Pornographic Materials, informally known as the Gathings Committee, issued a majority report in 1953. It claimed the distribution of obscene literature was a pervasive problem, and recommended the federal government censor the distribution of material deemed inappropriate. Ultimately, the House of Representatives discarded the committee's recommendations. However, questions of whether or not literature could affect social morals, or …

Saint George was a soldier of the Roman Emperor Diocletian who accepted martyrdom rather than denounce his Christian faith. This carved and painted sculpture was likely to have been pulled or carried outdoors in religious processions commemorating his feast day, now celebrated on April 23. He was frequently depicted astride a horse, holding a shield and an upraised sword, symbols of both protection and sacrifice. During the Middle Ages, Saint George was the subject of widespread devotion, from Russia and Greece in the east to as far west as the British Isles. Perceived as defender of the Crusades and the …
