Journals In The Field Of Higher Education: A Racial Analysis, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D., Jamillya Hardley, Darius Jordan, Michael Couch Jan 2014

Journals In The Field Of Higher Education: A Racial Analysis, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D., Jamillya Hardley, Darius Jordan, Michael Couch

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications

Too often, scholarship regarding the concept of race in the United States is absent from top-tier journals across fields. Yet, at some institutions, faculty, including scholars who explore race, are required to publish in top-tier journals to secure tenure. This article highlights the extent to which journals—of all tiers—within the field of higher education publish articles explicitly highlighting race in the study. The authors used Bray and Major’s article, “Status of Journals in the Field of Higher Education” as the data source for the sample. Using a systematic approach, the authors surveyed journals in the field of higher education to …

Hosting Language: Immigration And Translation In The Merry Wives Of Windsor, Kathryn Vomero Santos Jan 2014

Hosting Language: Immigration And Translation In The Merry Wives Of Windsor, Kathryn Vomero Santos

English Faculty Research

I will argue that Shakespeare uses the dialogic form of drama to stage such encounters between the languages of guest and host and to demonstrate that hosting the stranger in the English language causes the play’s English characters, along with its audiences and readers, to become “sensitive to the strangeness of [their] own language” and yet resistant to the idea that the immigrant can ever be fully “Englished” (Ricoeur 2006: 29).7

The French Of Algeria – Can The Colonisers Be Colonised?, Aoife Connolly Jan 2014

The French Of Algeria – Can The Colonisers Be Colonised?, Aoife Connolly

Books/Book Chapters

The Algerian War, 1954– 1962, was arguably the most traumatic war of decolonisation fought by Western colonial powers. The French had occupied Algeria since 1830 and the territory had formed three administrative départements of France since 1848. Thus, when conflict arose in 1954, the French administration could not conceive of a situation in which France was at war with itself and this ‘war without a name’ was referred to as ‘the events’ or ‘operations to maintain order’. Indeed, the war was only officially recognised in France in 1999. The war was particularly violent as Algeria was a settler colony in …

Making An Impact: New Directions For Arts And Humanities Research, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2014

Making An Impact: New Directions For Arts And Humanities Research, Ellen Hazelkorn

Articles

The severity of the global economic crisis has put the spotlight firmly on measuring academic and research performance and productivity, and assessing its contribution, value, impact and benefit. While traditionally, research output and impact was measured by peer-publications and citations, there is increased emphasis on a “market-driven approach”, which favours the bio-, medical and technological sciences, and helped reinforce a disciplinary hierarchy in which arts and humanities research (A&HR) has struggled for attention. This article charts the changing policy environment across Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway. It draws on evidence from the HERAVALUE project which studied how different stakeholders value …

This White Rose: Virginity In The Bloody Chamber, Kate Laurens Jan 2014

This White Rose: Virginity In The Bloody Chamber, Kate Laurens

The Corinthian

Angela Carter’s book, The Bloody Chamber is one of the most interesting takes on fairy tales that there is. Upon first hearing about this book, some people may think that she has re-written some fairy tales or that she has made more “adult” versions of them. However, Carter insists that this is not the case. “My intention was not to do ‘versions’ or, as the American edition of the book said, horribly, ‘adult’ fairy tales, but to extract the latent content from the traditional stories and to use it as the beginnings of new stories.”

Deciphering Irish Catholic Identities: Past And Present, Eamon Maher Jan 2014

Deciphering Irish Catholic Identities: Past And Present, Eamon Maher

Articles

This collection of essays, compiled and edited by Oliver Rafferty, is a significant contribution to making sense of the tangled labyrinth that is Irish Catholic identities. The plural is important here, as there are, in fact, multiple Catholic identities, something that is often forgotten in the rush to blandly link “Irish” and “Catholic”.
