Revenge, Guilt, And Greed: Feast Scenes And Political Order In Shakespearian Society, Ashley Vanderweele Feb 2013

Revenge, Guilt, And Greed: Feast Scenes And Political Order In Shakespearian Society, Ashley Vanderweele

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

Strange to see how a good dinner and feasting reconciles everybody. – Samuel Pepys

Feasts are a time of community unity, a time of imposed order even if chaos abounds. Feasts can be for celebratory reasons, they can be of a religious nature, and as Samuel Pepys points out, they can help mend rifts among people at odds with one another. Even when feasts have celebratory or religious purposes, they may also involve political matters. A monarch, for example, may host a feast to celebrate his wedding, but, while celebrating the joyous royal union, the guests are also celebrating the …

William-Henry Ireland, T. I. Curties Horsley, And The Anti-Catholic Gothic Novel, Diane Hoeveler Feb 2013

William-Henry Ireland, T. I. Curties Horsley, And The Anti-Catholic Gothic Novel, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

The question of the Gothic's use of and attitude toward Roman Catholicism has been increasingly contentious in recent years, with literary historians claiming that its prominence as a thematic concern provides a test case for distinguishing whether or not the Gothic should be understood as an ideology or as an aesthetic mode not primarily invested in ideological issues at all. By examining this critical issue, I argue for an understanding of the Gothic as primarily a form of propagandistic fiction invested in nationalistic Whig and Protestant ideologies. The article also builds on the recent biographical and critical work done on …

The Wisdom Of Athena, Tabitha Clark Ms. Jan 2013

The Wisdom Of Athena, Tabitha Clark Ms.

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Greek goddess Athene, also spelled Athena, is widely associated with the functions of the brain and referred to as the goddess of wisdom, but what type of wisdom does she have? This essay will focus on Athena and the many facets of one of her main characteristics, wisdom. It could be said that the two sides of her wisdom are reflective of the melding and balance of the male and female traits she possesses.

Inuit Myth In The Film “Brother Bear”, Tali M. Schroeder

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

The objective of this paper is to examine the 2003 film Brother Bear and note any mythological aspects that are accurately represented. The film displays an Inuit village and many correct cultural features of Inuit myth and legend. The paper examines the usage of music and dance, animal spirits, revenge, and shamanism in both the film and in Inuit culture. In my research, I found that the film represented these and other facets of Inuit myth extraordinarily well. While some parts of the film were inaccurate, the mythological parts were accurately represented for the most part. The depictions of Inuit …

Reversal Of Gender In Ancient Egyptian Mythology: Discovering The Secrets Of Androgyny, Ashley N. Dawson Ms. Jan 2013

Reversal Of Gender In Ancient Egyptian Mythology: Discovering The Secrets Of Androgyny, Ashley N. Dawson Ms.

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

Historically, the Egyptian view of life after death has been examined based on its spiritual and religious merit. There are other aspects of Egyptian culture, however, that lead us to believe that gender and sexual androgyny played a massive role in their religious practices. Ancient creation myths, such as the stories of Atum’s phallic creation and the separation of Nut and Geb, hint towards a more sexually ambiguous Egypt, created by gender switching gods. In addition, the astronomy of the time pointed towards the center of the universe as being both a masculine and feminine entity; this is embodied in …

In Search Of The Self: Eastern Versus Western Perspectives, Derek C. Wolter Jan 2013

In Search Of The Self: Eastern Versus Western Perspectives, Derek C. Wolter

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

In analyzing a mythological work, a proper understanding of the nature of the self and its relation to the Cosmos is essential. Alan Watts, the late British philosopher, proposed that there were two great myths of the self—myth here not used in the sense of something false, but rather as a way of interpreting oneself and one’s reality. In the West, there is a dualistic conception of the self where there is a clear distinction between creator and created, and Man and the self is viewed as an artifact of creation. In the East, there is a non-dualistic conception of …

The Borderpsychosocial Development Project: Is There A Specific Psychosocial Consciousness That Frames Development For Border Women?, María Gloria Munguía Wellman Jan 2013

The Borderpsychosocial Development Project: Is There A Specific Psychosocial Consciousness That Frames Development For Border Women?, María Gloria Munguía Wellman

American Studies ETDs

Often placed at the center of psychotherapeutic training rhetoric are the notions of cultural sophistication, competency, and responsiveness; however, these notions are often pushed to the margins of practice. This qualitative and interdisciplinary community project explores an important strand of psychosocial development that has always already existed, but had yet to be named. Psychosocial consciousness develops, through time, as a natural human response to our day-to-day experiences and encounters. These experiences and encounters form, reinforce, and perpetuate systems of understanding of self and others which profoundly impact our experience in the world. The exploration of the psychosocial development of a …

Savage Fakes: Misdirection, Fraudulence, And Autobiography In The 1920s, Whitney Purvis Rakich Jan 2013

Savage Fakes: Misdirection, Fraudulence, And Autobiography In The 1920s, Whitney Purvis Rakich

American Studies ETDs

In the 1920s, Americans grew increasingly interested in the figure of the primitive man, who was championed as the antidote to civilization's weakening effects on the modern human spirit. Concurrently in the field of American Studies, Vernon Lewis Parrington theorized about the effects of the "broad currents" of American life. the return to a primitive, natural self was just such a “broad current” of the day. With primitive conduct as the potential salve for civilized humanity, a handful of American authors of the 1920s used fake autobiographies to articulate the savage internal self. In the four texts that comprise this …

War Against Slavery Without A Black Soldier In Sight?, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

I've been lying to people. OK, not exactly lying, just not telling the whole truth. One of my favorite lines to use when I worked in Washington at the Lincoln Cottage was that the, "most important part of the Emancipation Proclamation came near the end, where it says that black men, the former slaves, can serve in the army and navy, that they can fight for their very own freedom." [excerpt]

Physical Activity And Modernization Among Bolivian Amerindians, Michael Gurven, Adrian V. Jaeggi, Hillard Kaplan, Daniel Cummings Jan 2013

Physical Activity And Modernization Among Bolivian Amerindians, Michael Gurven, Adrian V. Jaeggi, Hillard Kaplan, Daniel Cummings

ESI Publications

Background: Physical inactivity is a growing public health problem, and the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Conversely, indigenous populations living traditional lifestyles reportedly engage in vigorous daily activity that is protective against non-communicable diseases. Here we analyze physical activity patterns among the Tsimane, forager-horticulturalists of Amazonian Bolivia with minimal heart disease and diabetes. We assess age patterns of adult activity among men and women, test whether modernization affects activity levels, and examine whether nascent obesity is associated with reduced activity.

Methods and Findings: A factorial method based on a large sample of behavioral observations was employed …
