Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Thursday morning finds me presenting to a group of fellow NPS folks on the possibilities of the interpretive futures. So I've dragged out some older, weirder interpretive dreaming from a few years back. It's something I worked up for my friend and boss David Larsen to prove that topics like Climate Change can be discussed from any perspective and in any context. But this sort of dreaming can't stay locked in drawers, left on the backs of envelopes and stuffed away in digital filing cabinets back at work. So here's a peek at what I'm presenting. It's a way of …

Artefak Budaya Narasi Lisan Dan Visual Indonesia Menuju Komik Dan Animasi Global, Moch. Abdul Rohman
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Oral and visual narratives in local culture contain profound meanings and philosophical values that require deeper analysis. Influences from other countries’ cultures are evident in many literary and creative works, such as novels, comics, children’s stories, as well as multimedia productions including films and game software. Through the use of oral narrative cultural artifacts and visual cultural artifacts, both forms are expected to inspire the creation of scripts or stories and visual designs in comics and animated films that promote Indonesian local wisdom.

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
In general, the goal of this research is to explain persuasive messages in advertorial forms found in printed advertisements. The study employs a qualitative approach oriented toward discourse analysis theory. The research findings indicate that messages of product superiority, promises of fulfillment, factual status, and opinion status are used to establish a positive image of products. The content of persuasive messages in advertorial advertisements is engineered by capitalists to build the hegemony of potential customers and encourage consumptive actions.

The Poet Resigns: Poetry In A Difficult World, Robert Archambeau
The Poet Resigns: Poetry In A Difficult World, Robert Archambeau
University of Akron Press Publications
What are we really wishing for when we want poetry to have the prominence it had in the past? Why do American poets overwhelmingly identify with the political left? How do poems communicate? Is there an essential link between formal experimentation and political radicalism? What happens when poetic outsiders become academic insiders? Just what makes a poem a poem? If a poet gives up on her art, what reasons could she find for coming back to poetry? These are the large questions animating the essays of The Poet Resigns: Poetry in a Difficult World, a book that sets out to …

An English Major’S Revelation: Dominican’S Big History Summer Institute, Jaime Castner
Office of Academic Affairs
Perhaps English majors are predisposed to appreciate Big History. After all, the epic of our universe is just that: an epic. The longest story ever told. My introduction to Big History came in my last year as an undergraduate at Dominican University of California, when I was given the unique opportunity to provide staff support for the world’s first general education program with Big History as its content.
