Teaching White Papers Through Client Projects, Russell Willerton

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

White papers are increasingly prevalent in business and professional settings. Although textbook resources for white paper assignments are limited, a white paper assignment completed for a community client can provide a learning experience that students enjoy and that strengthens ties between the university and the community. This article describes a way to approach the white paper assignment in a communications-focused course and identifies resources to support white paper assignments.

Troubled Consciences: New Understandings And Performances Of Penance Among Catholics In Protestant England, Lisa Mcclain Mar 2013

Troubled Consciences: New Understandings And Performances Of Penance Among Catholics In Protestant England, Lisa Mcclain

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Prior to Protestant reforms of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Catholic clerics frequently preached about the necessity of confessing one's sins to a priest through the sacrament of penance. After the passage of laws in the 1570s making it a criminal offense to be a Catholic priest in England, Catholics residing in Protestant England possessed limited opportunities to make confession to a priest. Many laypersons feared for their souls. This article examines literature written by English Catholic clerics to comfort such laypersons. These authors re-interpreted traditional Catholic understandings of how sacramental penance delivers grace to allow English Catholics to confess …

The Darkling Lights Of Lucifer: Annihilation, Tradition, And Hell, Ross W. Mccullough Mar 2013

The Darkling Lights Of Lucifer: Annihilation, Tradition, And Hell, Ross W. Mccullough

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Gregory of Nyssa is famous for defending both the doctrine of epektasis, the continual ascent of the blessed toward God, and, in places, the doctrine of apokatastasis, the eventual restoration to God of all creation, including the Devil. This is a curious conjunction, for while Gregory connects them more than adventitiously, the tradition of the Eastern Church has largely received the former and rejected the latter.1 The point of this essay is to follow that intuition, not to say inspiration, of the tradition: briefly to challenge Gregory's conjunction and to develop from that challenge and with certain currents in philosophy …

The Enduring Narrative Of “Socialized” Medicine: Oppositional Rhetoric And Obama’S Health Care Reform, Richard Holtzman Mar 2013

The Enduring Narrative Of “Socialized” Medicine: Oppositional Rhetoric And Obama’S Health Care Reform, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

President Barack Obama and his promises of health care reform were met with strong public support when he took office in January 2009. By the time Congress ultimately passed legislation in March 2010, not only had a majority of citizens turned against health care reform, but many had come to interpret it as inimical to American values. Opponents pejoratively branded the president a “socialist” and his reform as “socialized medicine.” A review of the history of health care reform efforts in the United States over the last eight decades illustrates that this rhetoric and the defining patterns of its proliferation …

In 1806, Richmond entrepreneurs built the city’s first theater, the New Theater, at the present-day juncture of Thirteenth and Broad streets. This theater was likely the first in Virginia, and Richmonders of all colors, classes, and genders attended, although a three-tiered system of seating and ticket pricing separated attendees by race and class. Wealthy white patrons paid a dollar or more to sit in boxes thoroughly separated from the rest of the audience. Their middle and working class counterparts paid two or three quarters for orchestra seating. For a quarter or less, the city’s poorest citizens, any people of color, …

Go Local: Morality And International Activism, Aleksandar Jokić Mar 2013

Go Local: Morality And International Activism, Aleksandar Jokić

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

A step towards constructing an ethics of international activism is proposed by formulating a series of constraints on what would constitute morally permissible agency in the context that involves delivering services abroad, directly or indirectly. Perhaps surprisingly, in this effort the author makes use of the concept of 'force multiplier'. This idea and its official applications have explanatory importance in considering the correlation between the post-Cold War phenomenal growth in the number of international non-governmental organizations and the emergence of the US as the sole, unchallenged superpower. Four moral constraints useful for morally assessing international activism are formulated and defended. …

Women Leaders In The Rwandan Genocide: When Women Choose To Kill, Donna J. Maier Mar 2013

Women Leaders In The Rwandan Genocide: When Women Choose To Kill, Donna J. Maier

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The role of women as perpetrators in the Rwanda Genocide has been documented much more so than that of women in other genocides and crimes against humanity: more than in the holocaust of World War II, than in the massacres of Mayan Guatemala's Indians in 1982, and more even than in the widespread atrocities that accompanied the break-up of the former Yugoslavia which were virtually concurrent with the Rwanda Genocide. It is not entirely clear why this is the case. Testimonies of women perpetrators and victims were collected in the immediate aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide by various human rights …

Contemporary Theatre In Catalonia: A Story Of Creative Struggles, Sharon G. Feldman Mar 2013

Contemporary Theatre In Catalonia: A Story Of Creative Struggles, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

The term “normalization” is typically employed within Catalan political and linguistic circles to refer to the process of recuperation, revival, and relegitimization of Catalan cultural and intellectual life that ensued following the period of the Franco dictatorship (1939-1975). Here, to be “normal” is to move from the periphery to the centre, to be regarded as valid rather than illicit, and to be visible and vociferous—even obvious and everyday—instead of obstructed, silenced, or relegated to the margins of exile, the recesses of memory, or the darkness of invisibility. The path along which the contemporary Catalan theatre scene has struggled to recover …

Music Publishing By Subscription In 1820s France: A Preliminary Study, Anita Breckbill Mar 2013

Music Publishing By Subscription In 1820s France: A Preliminary Study, Anita Breckbill

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Subscription lists in six scores published in France in the 1820s open a window onto publishing and distribution practices of that era. The publishers are J. Frey of Paris, with examples of subscription lists from full scores in his complete sets of operas by Mozart and Grétry; Maurice Schlesinger, also of Paris, with a vocal score of Mozart’s Requiem; and Bohem of Lille, with a vocal score of Zémire et Azor by Louis Spohr. The subscription lists contain information about the types of subscribers: male/female, musicians/nonmusicians, and Parisians/provincials/ foreigners. These examples from nineteenth-century France suggest that funding the publishing of …

Serving God In The Midst Of Multiple Sclerosis: A Holistic And Spiritual Model For Physical Sustainment, Timothy Harville Mar 2013

Serving God In The Midst Of Multiple Sclerosis: A Holistic And Spiritual Model For Physical Sustainment, Timothy Harville

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Multiple Sclerosis is a devastating disease that affects not only the one who suffers with MS, but also their family and relationships leaving the patient feeling depressed and without hope. If the disease is disclosed, many churches and the International Mission Board will reject the person's application because of the potential cost and medical care needed. This author was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis in 2008. This writer has experienced the obstacles described above. This model will serve as a motivational tool to help all of us who suffer with MS to use the disability for …

Forgiveness In A Political Context: The Challenge And The Potential, Pol Vandevelde Mar 2013

Forgiveness In A Political Context: The Challenge And The Potential, Pol Vandevelde

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

In this article I examine the challenging question concerning whether communal forgiveness is possible. In order to show that it is in principle possible I articulate and then respond to two of the most powerful objections to communal forgiveness that have been formulated to date, namely: (1) the argument that only victims can forgive; and (2) the argument that forgiveness is unconditional and thus outside the scope of such things as communal or political deliberation.

I argue that communal forgiveness is a process of transformation that requires at the practical level an institutional framework in which a representative of a …
