Manifestations Of History In The Novel “Contemporary Basra Maqamat: The Story Of A City”, Mohammed Abdul Hussein Huwaidi
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
History deals with objective facts that can be labeled as relative, because we cannot distance the political whims and factional interests that contributed to writing history. When the art of the novel took history as a subject for narration, the first stage witnessed the dominance of the presence of the historical event at the expense of its aesthetic employment, as the novel became a template for conveying historical material. The art of the novel introduced the elements of plot and suspense into the historical material. With the development witnessed by the novel throughout its long history, the historical material was …

Features Of Religious Rebellion In Ancient Iraq, Walid Saadi Al-Mayali
Features Of Religious Rebellion In Ancient Iraq, Walid Saadi Al-Mayali
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The changes that occurred in the worship of natural elements after their migration to the southern part of Iraq had the greatest impact on human life and their concept of divinity. They led to the undermining of the foundations of that worship. Moreover, political conflict, social injustice, and economic inequality weakened religious belief. The themes of deification themselves were a source of doubt and suspicion, given the duality of divine action within them, oscillating between good and evil, virtue and vice, justice and injustice, strength and weakness, which led to confusion, doubt, and rebellion. Such ideas emerged at the end …
Crowdsourcing Transcriptions Of Archival Materials, Aaron G. Noll
Crowdsourcing Transcriptions Of Archival Materials, Aaron G. Noll
Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston
Crowdsourcing is a method that has been effectively used to pool the knowledge and skills of large numbers of online volunteers for the creation of information resources utilized by historians, genealogists, and scientists. In recent years, archivists have begun to crowdsource the transcription of their handwritten records. Transcription of such records has traditionally been completed by professional transcribers who are skilled in reading multiple handwriting styles, knowledgeable about the creators and historical context of the records, and can interpret varying record formats and genres. However, increasingly limited resources of time and money have made traditional transcription more difficult to accomplish. …
Recovering A Sordid Past: Public Memory Of Scollay Square, Joan Ilacqua
Recovering A Sordid Past: Public Memory Of Scollay Square, Joan Ilacqua
Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston
Boston’s own entertainment district, Scollay Square, has been eradicated from Boston’s landscape, both physically and in public memory. In its prime, Scollay Square housed dime museums, theaters, burlesque attractions and its answer to Nathan’s hot dogs, Joe and Nemo’s. Eventually, Scollay Square deteriorated and was targeted for urban renewal. At present, Boston’s Government Center and City Hall Plaza occupy what once was a thriving local attraction. Beyond the plaque dedicated to the Howard Athenaeum, a strong public memory of Scollay Square is not evident in Boston. Following the rise and fall of Scollay Square and analyzing rhetoric used to support …
Researching Stonewall Nation: Interdisciplinary Considerations For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Historical Research, Jacob Carter
Researching Stonewall Nation: Interdisciplinary Considerations For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Historical Research, Jacob Carter
Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston
The Alpine County Project, a climactic event in the gay liberation movement when activists took steps to create a self-governing separatist community in a remote region of rural California, is a largely forgotten topic of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) history. Though historical scholarship treated the project marginally within broader conceptual or regional contexts of gay liberation, the project had not been examined comprehensively in its own right. When approaching the topic, the initial historical problem to resolve was determining whether the project was a hoax staged to generate publicity or part of a genuine gay and lesbian separatist movement. …
Born Digital: Event-Driven Archives, Vincent Capone
Born Digital: Event-Driven Archives, Vincent Capone
Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston
The growth of the internet has brought numerous tools and opportunities for archivists to both enhance their collections and reach out to potential patrons. Archives across the globe have begun immense digitization efforts to bring collections into the digital age and make them accessible to a broader audience. But what challenges face new archives whose collections are born-digital? How do these archives prove that they are indeed an archival facility and not simply a memory institution? These questions have risen around numerous digital archives born in the past decade to document and commemorate social events and tragic disasters, including the …
