Is There A New Kind Of Hero In Comics?, Frank Bramlett Mar 2013

Is There A New Kind Of Hero In Comics?, Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

As a linguist, I am professionally devoted to the scientific study of language. But I have a confession: I used to be a literature major. As an undergraduate, I studied in a traditional English department, and I only accidentally found out about linguistics when I took a grammar class. In those literature courses, professors lectured about the different kinds of hero that have been discussed for thousands of years. In Greece, Aristotle wrote about the hero, and in the Middle Ages, the hero was construed differently. In the twentieth century, the notion of the anti-hero became possible, and writers in …

Byu Excavation Project, Dr. Kerry Muhlestein Mar 2013

Byu Excavation Project, Dr. Kerry Muhlestein

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the monies from the MEG granted to me and the BYU Egypt Excavation Project, we were able to accomplish wonderful things. First, we were able to train 4 students in a number of things related to our excavation. All four students received training in how to create and examine textiles. They analyzed under the supervision of experts various ancient textiles in our collection, until they were able to undertake the analysis on their own. They then helped with the first entries into a textile database we are creating. This enabled them to become even more familiar with the examination …

Rusticus: Notes On Class And Culture In Rural New Hampshire, Donald Hall Mar 2013

Rusticus: Notes On Class And Culture In Rural New Hampshire, Donald Hall

New England Journal of Public Policy

Old New Hampshire Highway Number Four was incorporated by an act of the New Hampshire legislature in the autumn of 1800. It wound out of Portsmouth, a seaport that once rivaled Boston, drove west through Concord, north past Penacook, through Boscawen, Salisbury, Andover, and Wilmot on its way to Lebanon and the Connecticut River. These names string history like beads. The Penacook tribe assembled each year on the banks of the Merrimack at the site of the present town that bears their name. I grew up thinking Boscawen an unusual Indian name; it is Cornish, surname of an admiral victorious …

Coal, Cotton, & Lynching: Labor And Art In Arkansas, Sarita N. Riley Mar 2013

Coal, Cotton, & Lynching: Labor And Art In Arkansas, Sarita N. Riley

Theses and Dissertations

The 1930s was a decade of change throughout America. The Great Depression affected all citizens. Joblessness spread like a plague, affecting rich and poor alike. The nation turned to federally funded work programs for its very survival. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) kept Americans working. Many projects centered on building infrastructure, but artists, writers, and historians also created culturally relevant projects to inspire and entertain the masses. The WPA spawned a movement of left leaning individuals who used art to create works protesting the ills of society. Common themes included joblessness, homelessness, and lynching in America. Joe Jones, a St. …

The Strategic Effects Of Counterinsurgency Operations At Religious Sites: Lessons From India, Thailand, And Israel, Timothy L. Christopher Mar 2013

The Strategic Effects Of Counterinsurgency Operations At Religious Sites: Lessons From India, Thailand, And Israel, Timothy L. Christopher

Dissertations and Theses

With the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center buildings, the intersection of religious ideals in war has been at the forefront of the American discussion on war and conflict. The New York attacks were followed by the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan in October of 2001 in an attempt to destroy the religious government of the Taliban and capture the Islamic terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, and then followed by the 2003 invasion of Iraq, both in an attempt to fight terrorism and religious extremism. In both instances, American forces became embroiled in counterinsurgency operations against insurgent fighters who …

An Unexpected Hiatus And A Few Remarks, John M. Rudy Mar 2013

An Unexpected Hiatus And A Few Remarks, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

After a hiatus I've felt guilty about for days, I'm returning to the keyboard to rejoin the blogosphere. A bout of my own sickness and some family sickness kept me away from the keyboard. But I return, turning up once again like a bad penny. I've got plenty of things in the works, from Twitter to the New York Tribune, from the proto-Scott-Joplin to continuing my deep dives into Gettysburg's past. But for now, I wanted to take you inside the late, great Future of the Civil War conference held this weekend at Gettysburg College. My battle with a nasty …

Y'All Come See Me: Lessons Learned From The Life And Community Of Mary Stafford, Sara Mitchell Mar 2013

Y'All Come See Me: Lessons Learned From The Life And Community Of Mary Stafford, Sara Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines a local Little Rock community, anchored by its 99-year-old matriarch, Mary Stafford. Mary lives on her, and her lifestyle is dependent on a network of neighbors that help care and provide for her daily needs. This network exists because Mary has touched the lives of those around her so deeply, that now in her senior years, she has enough assistance to maintain an independent lifestyle in her home. With strong themes of sacrifice and motherhood, told through the narrator's own life experiences combined with Mary's, this project explores how a community impacts the lives of its members. …

Commonality And Diversity In Recordings Of Beethoven’S Middle-Period String Quartets, Nancy November Mar 2013

Commonality And Diversity In Recordings Of Beethoven’S Middle-Period String Quartets, Nancy November

Performance Practice Review

A widespread opinion in recent research about the performance of Beethoven’s works is that artists need to restore a connection to "tradition," and that recordings from the early twentieth century can help with this. However, these early recordings tell us most about the aesthetics and performance ideals of their day, and hence how Beethoven and his string quartets were received by early twentieth-century audiences. Case studies of early recordings of Beethoven middle-period quartets reveal ways in which these these performances differed, sometimes radically, from the kinds of performances Beethoven would have expected to hear, especially with regard to the use …

Racial Profiling, Security, And Human Rights, Faye V. Harrison Mar 2013

Racial Profiling, Security, And Human Rights, Faye V. Harrison

Center for the Study of Race & Race Relations: Lectures and Events

Neighborhood Watch coordinator George Zimmerman’s February 2012 fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed, 17-year old African American in a gated community in Sanford, Florida has raised serious questions concerning racial profiling. Although a violation of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, ample evidence attests to racial profiling’s pervasiveness as a law enforcement tactic in contexts of street-level crime, counterterrorism, and immigration control. Since September 11, 2001, the longstanding problem of racial profiling has both deepened and expanded in terms of the populations targeted. Incentives to profile have been built into laws and policies that sacrifice civil liberties and …

“I Am Trayvon Martin”: Visual Culture, Trauma, And The Incarceration Crisis, Amy Abugo Ongiri Mar 2013

“I Am Trayvon Martin”: Visual Culture, Trauma, And The Incarceration Crisis, Amy Abugo Ongiri

Center for the Study of Race & Race Relations: Lectures and Events

Political scientist Cathy Cohen has characterized the post-Reagan era African American community as caught in “a period of contradictions and advanced marginalization.” Cohen notes that while African American participation in electoral politics has grown exponentially since the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, African Americans are increasingly marginalized economically as well as socially. One of the major factors in social marginalization is what African American Studies scholar Richard Iton has characterized as “hyperincarceration.” This presentation will explore the apparently contradictory conditions in the U.S. that created the possibility of both Trayvon Martin’s murder and the triumph of Black …

Racism In A Black White Binary: On The Reaction To Trayvon Martin’S Death, Peter Westmoreland Mar 2013

Racism In A Black White Binary: On The Reaction To Trayvon Martin’S Death, Peter Westmoreland

Center for the Study of Race & Race Relations: Lectures and Events

Some philosophers have contended that racism necessarily involves a binary structure. In the United States, the binary is coded in terms of Blacks and Whites and functions in part in this way: it describes violence as racist only if committed by whites against blacks and prescribes that all such violence is potentially racist. This concept operated during the immediate aftermath of Trayvon Martin’s death in both allegations of racism without strong evidence and assertions against George Zimmerman’s being white that were intended to protect him. While perhaps no racism was involved in Martin’s death, we do well to remember that …

Separate Spaces, Lauren Walter Mar 2013

Separate Spaces, Lauren Walter

Innovate UNO

My honors senior thesis, a creative project entitled Separate Spaces, is a collection of fourteen poems that reflects on trauma, loss, interpersonal relationships, and nature. Many of the poems are dramatic monologues, which means that they are written in a voice that is distinctly not my own. This allows me to portray a range of extreme voices, including a survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima, a U.S. veteran of the Iraq War, and murderer Perry Smith. Although I consider myself a free verse writer, preferring to work without regular meter or rhyme, one of the poems is written in iambic …
