Oxymormon: Feminism Ain't Got No Place On The Pulpit… Or Does It?, Jennifer Johnson-Bell
Oxymormon: Feminism Ain't Got No Place On The Pulpit… Or Does It?, Jennifer Johnson-Bell
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
Just as Moraga examines the effects this myth has had on her identity, I will, as a Mormon (although I dis-identify with that label except in the context of my upbringing) and a feminist, explore certain myths perpetuated within the Mormon culture and what effects they have had on my identity as well as my relationship with other Mormon women. Three myths I would like to explore revolve around the concepts of plural marriage (polygamy), priesthood, and the notion of Heavenly Mother. [excerpt]
Wpa Projects In Anaheim, Ca, During The Great Depression, Laura Enomoto
Wpa Projects In Anaheim, Ca, During The Great Depression, Laura Enomoto
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
The Works Progress Administration (WPA), served as a catalyst for public works programs, specifically in the area of providing work to the unemployed. In cities all over the nation, the WPA provided grants that either paid employees directly or allocated funds to private firms. These programs were fundamental not only to the individuals they employed, but to the future of the cities themselves. Through the construction of public buildings, art projects, parks, and roads, American cities endured, remained intact, and even flourished as a result of the WPA.
A Christian Understanding Of Aesthetic Agency: A Theological Framework Of Resistance To Cultural Imperialism, Elise Edwards
A Christian Understanding Of Aesthetic Agency: A Theological Framework Of Resistance To Cultural Imperialism, Elise Edwards
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
Aesthetic agency refers to conditions, capacities, and states that inform artistic forms of acting and exerting power on social structures. In resistance to the marginalization of women of color, aesthetic agency is exercised through creative acts of culture-making and critique of such practices to challenge domination and representation of the oppressed other. To support this work as a feminist Christian ethicist, I construct a theological framework for aesthetic agency. This paper proposes a theological understanding of transformative aesthetics and then describes the exercise of aesthetic agency for Christian communities by using a television special, Black Girls Rock! as an example.
Quiverfull: Conservative Christian Women And Empowerment In The Home, Juliana Denson
Quiverfull: Conservative Christian Women And Empowerment In The Home, Juliana Denson
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
What is commonly referred to as “The Quiverfull Movement” is defined by its particular brand of “neo-fundamentalist” Christianity that advocates leaving family planning entirely up to God by refusing to use contraception, medical treatments, or, oftentimes, even natural family planning to prevent or control pregnancy and also tends to promote female submission to male headship. Although it has attracted increasing attention from the media and the ire of feminists, it has yet to receive scholarly attention. In this essay, I attempt to present a fair, nonjudgmental treatment of Quiverfull by seriously considering the experiences and words of Quiverfull-minded Christians, particularly …
Manifest Content Without A Dreamer: A Freudian Analysis Of Percival Everett’S Erasure, Irene Rose De Lilly
Manifest Content Without A Dreamer: A Freudian Analysis Of Percival Everett’S Erasure, Irene Rose De Lilly
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
This paper will provide a Freudian analysis of Erasure in order to prove that Everett is, in fact, the two main characters he has created, as well as attempt to challenge the stigma of interpreting through a psychoanalytical lens, rather than treating writing and literature as manifest content without a dreamer.
It's Not About The Coffee: Queer Temporalities At A Community Coffeehouse, Jodi Davis
It's Not About The Coffee: Queer Temporalities At A Community Coffeehouse, Jodi Davis
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
Long Beach California’s “gay ghetto” 1 is a loosely defined neighborhood with bars, coffeehouses and businesses that cater to the LGBTQ community. The corner of Broadway and Junipero roughly marks the center of the gay ghetto and is home to Hot Java “The Community Coffeehouse”. The customers there are loyal and through ethnographic inquiry this paper highlights the importance of Hot Java as a queer site of resistance and community building. Through interviews, observation, and exploration of queer theoretical models of space and time, this paper illustrates Hot Java as a queer temporal space marked by trauma, resistance, and community …
Unbelief, Lawlessness, And Satan: Viewing The Freer Logion As A Scribal Response To Open- Ended Eschatological Themes In Mark, Seth Clark
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
The focus of my study is to demonstrate that major variants in the text of Early Christian Literature were purposely inserted into the text in light of theological controversies by scribes who represented a certain perspective on behalf of an Early Christian community. The text on which this paper is focused is the ending of the Gospel of Mark and the major textual variant known as the “Freer Logion.” I will argue that the Freer Logion was purposely inserted to conclude themes that were left open by the author of Mark and not addressed by the scribe who inserted the …
Beauty-Ful Inferiority: Female Subservience In Disney’S Beauty And The Beast, Jeremy Chow
Beauty-Ful Inferiority: Female Subservience In Disney’S Beauty And The Beast, Jeremy Chow
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
The ubiquity of Disney movies has certainly transformed the American cultural landscape. The Disney zeitgeist manifests itself as generations of children actively seek Prince Charmings, unrealistic fairy tale relationships and the omnipotent, happily-ever-after. One such Disney favorite, Beauty and the Beast (1991), reveals typical Disney themes such as the power of altruism, the transformation of the anthropomorphic, and the catharsis of true love. Yet, under these benevolent-seeming Disney themes lurk more sinister, subliminal messages. Beauty and the Beast promotes female subservience and subjugation in addition to the glorification of abusive relationships. Belle, the female protagonist, embodies these gendered disparities and …
Marriageable Age In Islam: A Study On Marriageable Age Laws And Reforms In Islamic Law, Jeremiah J. Bowden
Marriageable Age In Islam: A Study On Marriageable Age Laws And Reforms In Islamic Law, Jeremiah J. Bowden
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
One area of Islamic law that has been subject to much criticism as of late is the practice of child-marriage. Some, preferring to view Islam suspiciously, tend to create a caricature of Muslims as morally depraved individuals who force young daughters into marriages to old men for financial gain. Several polemicists commenting on this practice have hurled virulent epithets toward the Prophet Muhammad, whom they believe to be the originator of this abhorrent practice. After exploring instances where child-marriage still occurs, I will examine how this practice is currently being reformed in a way consistent with Islamic law. Ultimately, I …
Assimilation, Acculturation, And The Law: Solving A “Problem” Like Shar’Ia, Kristina E. Benson
Assimilation, Acculturation, And The Law: Solving A “Problem” Like Shar’Ia, Kristina E. Benson
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
An unexpected development in the English legal system involves Muslim women’s use of legally binding Shar’ia councils to protect their autonomy, marital security, and property rights. Although scholars and political commentators alike have voiced concerns that Muslim women will be treated unfairly in these councils, there is some indication that women have become adept at navigating this plural legal landscape and that they have often managed to secure better outcomes from Shar’ia family law than from English courts. Over 80 Shar’ia tribunals have been established to issue legally binding decisions on divorce, child custody, inheritance, and other areas of family …
The Use Of Rhetoric In Anti-Suffrage And Anti-Feminist Publications, Artour Aslanian
The Use Of Rhetoric In Anti-Suffrage And Anti-Feminist Publications, Artour Aslanian
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
After decades of struggling to gain the right to vote, women were finally granted that right with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment on August 18, 1920. While it would seem that most, if not all, women would be in favor of gaining the right to vote, the women’s suffrage movement did not represent the wishes of all women within the United States. Scholarship in this area largely focuses on the historical developments of the suffrage movements, with the presence of female opponents of suffrage and anti-suffragist organizations receiving less attention.1 These anti-suffragists were vocal in their opposition to the …
Feeble To Effeminacy: Race And Gender In The British Imperial Consciousness 1837-1901, Brett Linsley
Feeble To Effeminacy: Race And Gender In The British Imperial Consciousness 1837-1901, Brett Linsley
Grand Valley Journal of History
Scholars of British imperialism have given ample attention to European concepts of race and gender during the Victorian era. Much of the literature has vaguely suggested a symbiotic relationship between the concepts, but failed to assert any definitive theories. The following attempts to fill this gap by putting forward a critical interpretation of the roles that race and gender played in the imperial consciousness during this epoch. The paper demonstrates that the perceptions of race that were rampant on the imperial periphery were the unique synthesis of evolving gender identities in the Victorian metropole.
From Ecological Creativity To An Ecology Of Well-Being: ‘Flows & Catchments’ As A Case Study Of Nvivo, Dr Brad Warren, Dr Patrick West
From Ecological Creativity To An Ecology Of Well-Being: ‘Flows & Catchments’ As A Case Study Of Nvivo, Dr Brad Warren, Dr Patrick West
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
This paper’s research question concerns how the ecological creativity of the Volcanic Plains region of Western Victoria may be transformed into an ecology of well-being of benefit to the local community. Drawing on the philosophies of Spinoza and Gilles Deleuze, we argue that community well-being results from the richness of connections and relationships made within a place. The case study for our investigation is ‘Flows & Catchments’, which is an ongoing, collaborative, creative-arts research project auspiced by Deakin University. Its modus operandi is Practice-Based Research (PBR), and its aim is to promote community well-being in Western Victoria. However, while the …
The River In A Landscape Of Creative Practice: Creative River Journeys., Kylie J Stevenson
The River In A Landscape Of Creative Practice: Creative River Journeys., Kylie J Stevenson
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
In my current PhD study, Creative River Journeys, I use the metaphor of the river as a data capture tool when interviewing artist-researchers about their experiences of conducting creative practice within a university context. My use of the river functions as a metaphor for the creative process. I have adapted the River Journey tool from its previous use as a map of teacher identity and professional development, and in a project about children’s musical experience. This PhD project follows a long tradition of using the river as a metaphor. For example, the river has been used in a narrative therapy …
The Intellectual Trajectory Of Marxist Literary Theory From Abstraction To Concreteness, Diyong Long
The Intellectual Trajectory Of Marxist Literary Theory From Abstraction To Concreteness, Diyong Long
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Marx did not take literature and art as isolated phenomena but approached literary phenomena with roughly the same way of thinking as he investigates other social phenomena. The general intellectual trajectory in his investigation followed the path from abstraction to concreteness, which exhibited in literary studies as the following three aspects. First, writers should observe the society and its age from historical point of view, and create typical character reflecting tendency of the age and social nature. Secondly, characterization in writings should demonstrate Shakespeare's realism instead of Schiller’s method so as to avoid turning the character into a mere mouthpiece …
The Political Position Of Poets In ThePolis: An Interpretation Of Pindar'sEighth Pythian, Lin Lou
The Political Position Of Poets In ThePolis: An Interpretation Of Pindar'sEighth Pythian, Lin Lou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As the greatest lyric poet in ancient Greece, Pindar achieved the peak of the Greek traditional choral poems through his beauteous odes and his teaching about aristocratic moral teaching. This paper takes the use of the first person, a conventional technique in his odes, as the starting point to approach the odes. T he paper tries to analyze the poet's political position in the polis (city) through a detailed reading of Lines 60-80 of Pindar's "Eighth Pythian Ode." In this section, the first person and the second person are employed in the pray to Apollo, the claim for the harmonious …
The Two Narratives Of The History Of Avant-Garde Poetry After The "Misty Poetry", Yuqin Jiang
The Two Narratives Of The History Of Avant-Garde Poetry After The "Misty Poetry", Yuqin Jiang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the 1990s, the avant-garde poets had a very strong consciousness of literary history, and some had even kept a detailed record of creative activities. While some proclaimed that they were writing for literary history, there were more poets who, unsatisfied with the aesthetic norms and rules advocated by the scholastic critics, would engage themselves into the critical practice by writing essays, editing poetry anthologies and compiling collections of critical essays on poetry. In the 1990s' avant-garde poetic circle, the poets managed to be the masters of their own poetry, and their active engagement into the theoretical exploration and the …
The Word Order In The Collective Titles For Authors In The Tang Dynasty And Its Implications For Literary Criticism, Shijin Luo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
It is a common phenomenon to group writers under a collective title in the history of literature and literary research, especially in the Tang Dynasty. This phenomenon, as well as how to group the authors and in what order to call them, is meaningful to literary criticism. As the collective titles are highly acronymized or very abstract, the process of de-acronymizing and origin-seeking becomes an approach of interpretation, during which the re-examination of the original authors’ achievements may help to promote the process of canonization. Collective titles have different significance and value in the history of Chinese literature, and some …
Neo-Confucianism's Premises Facing Aesthetic Questions: Art, Ethics And The Way In Zhou Dunyi's Thought, M'Bondjo Maud
Neo-Confucianism's Premises Facing Aesthetic Questions: Art, Ethics And The Way In Zhou Dunyi's Thought, M'Bondjo Maud
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Zhou Dunyi (1017-1073) is commonly considered as the founder of the Confucian revival during the Song Dynasty (976-1279). In his moral treatise, Penetrating the Book of Changes, Zhou Dunyi clearly distinguishes "art (艺)" from "reality/truth (实)," and claims that the role of "expression (文)" is to express the Sage Kings' Way (圣王之道). The claim leads us to ask to what extent "art" helps along ethics in the restoration of the Way and whether there is a philosophy of art in Zhou Dunyi's moral discourse. The paper observes that cheng (诚 sincerity) is a central concept in Zhou Dunyi's thought and …
On The New Media Culture And Production Of Space: In The Perspective Of Binary Relation Between Space And Place, Jun Zhu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
One eternal issue in the study of space is the binary relation of space and place, which is reshaped in the age of new media by the mimic culture. The production of space observes the logic of consumerism while it also refreshes the belief in localism. This profound confliction between space and place is manifested in fans culture, cyber subculture, fundamentalism, and even cyber-terrorism, thus it attributes to an increasingly serious global culture of risk. At the present age of new media, the space crisis can be approached mainly through the simple strategies of localism, everyday discourse and utopianism, which …
On The Paradigm Shift In Literary Theory Research, Dengyun Dai
On The Paradigm Shift In Literary Theory Research, Dengyun Dai
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The paper claims that researches on literary theory in contemporary China have been restricted in intellectual horizon and displays a tendency of homogeneity and one-dimensionality, which in turn results in a path that depends on the novelty and change. The author argues that one fundamental way to offset this dependence is to return to the origin and explore the source. This paper tries to redefine the problem consciousness and intellectual horizon and re-clarify the methodological path of literary theory research in order to promote the interventional nature of literary theory research and the mergence between theory and thoughts in the …
Prof. Xu Zhongyu's Researches Into Literary Theory, Qinghua Wang
Prof. Xu Zhongyu's Researches Into Literary Theory, Qinghua Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper tries to delineate Prof. Xu Zhongyu's contribution to the establishment of Chinese literary theory. Since the end of the Cultural Revolution, Prof. Xu Zhongyu has been making efforts to approach literary theory with an aim to establish the discipline of Chinese theory of literature and art which may be grounded on traditional Chinese literary criticism. His theorization has covered such significant issues as the value of literature, the artistic principles of literary creativity and criticism, and the national characteristics of literary theory. His insightful observations and investigations have constructed a unique research framework that bases on literariness, centers …
The Boat As Polis: Some Issues Of The Political Philosophy In Early Greek Poetry, Xiaofeng Liu
The Boat As Polis: Some Issues Of The Political Philosophy In Early Greek Poetry, Xiaofeng Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The early Greek lyric poetry is not only about love or love story, but also responds to the revolution of the 6th century B.C. It reflects the fundamental experiences of the transition from aristocracy to democracy, which is the focus of this paper when examining the poems of Solon, Alcaeus and Theogenis.
The Education Of Teachers Of Chinese And The Spirit Of University: On Xu Zhongyu's Literary Theory, Xiaoguang Lu
The Education Of Teachers Of Chinese And The Spirit Of University: On Xu Zhongyu's Literary Theory, Xiaoguang Lu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The uniqueness of Xu Zhongyu's literary theory lies in his people-oriented thought of "teacher education". The first remarkable characteristic is its concern with issues specific to the cultivation of the grass-root talents. Xu Zhongyu's literary theory enters into the field of College Chinese because of the implicit reason that he reinterprets the classical meaning of "normal" to relate with the spirit of university. Xu Zhongyu's literary theory and his long career in Chinese normal education may provide new inspiration to establish the spirit of university different from Western concept of "normal" education.
Zhu Guangqian And Expressionism: An Alternative Way To Bridge The Chinese And Western Aesthetics, Xun Dai
Zhu Guangqian And Expressionism: An Alternative Way To Bridge The Chinese And Western Aesthetics, Xun Dai
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The paper claims that the duality mode of Sino-Western comparative aesthetics research and the en vogue mentality in prevailing in China hinders our understanding of the Westernization process of Chinese aesthetics from multiple perspectives. One important thread of development that has been neglected is Zhu Guangqian's expressionist aesthetics. Influenced by the dominating lyrical tradition in Chinese poetics and the Western expressionism prevalent in the early 20th century, Zhu found it hard to buy the mimetic theory in the Western tradition and the Marxist epistemological aesthetics born out of it. Instead, Zhu developed his own expressionist aesthetics by integrating the Western …

Godly Heretics: Essays On Alternative Christianity In Literature And Popular Culture, Marc Dipaolo
Faculty Books & Book Chapters
"When computers freeze, they are "rebooted" and soon working properly again. Similarly, legendary thinkers throughout history have argued that Christianity should start fresh by recapturing the humanitarian spirit of Jesus' original message. These include such disparate individuals as Thomas Jefferson, Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens, Walt Whitman, Friedrich Nietzsche, Leo Tolstoy, George Bernard Shaw, and the religious leaders of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Surprisingly enough, even classic television shows and films meant to be entertaining--Lost, Battlestar Galactica, It's a Wonderful Life, Groundhog Day, Decalogue, and A Charlie Brown Christmas--are attempts to apply the basic principles of Christianity to modern times. …

On The Compilation Objectives Of Xiao Tong's Selections Of Refined Literature: From The Perspective Of Wei Zhao's "On Gaming", Xun Yang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Wei Zhao's (204-273) "On Gaming" had not drawn much attention before the Kingdom of Liang (502-557), probably because its tenets were at odds with the social mores promoted by Emperor Wu of Liang. Wei's text was included into the Selections of Refined Literature because on the one hand it appealed to Xiao Tong's personal taste as he wanted to express his distain toward gaming and on the other hand Xiao Tong hoped to convey a warning to some officials and to caution and dissuade his own father. This paper tries to demonstrate through the above mentioned example that specific reasons …
