SURGE

If you haven’t noticed yet, we’ve had some really spectacular visitors from the south with us on Gettysburg’s campus the last few days! Their initiative involved using theater as a means for self-expression and communication, but RATCo spread because it was so successful and ultimately reached Selma, Alabama. Selma, although a major site for the Civil Rights movement, and also the site for the last battle of the civil war, has changed very little since the 1960s. …

Fandom And Cult Cinema: Audience Responses To Rocky Horror Picture Show, Christopher Mohr Mar 2013

Fandom And Cult Cinema: Audience Responses To Rocky Horror Picture Show, Christopher Mohr

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

This paper examines audience responses to cult cinema using a case study of the cult classic, Rocky Horror Picture Show. Using Lawrence Grossberg's essay, "Is There a Fan in the House?: The Affective Sensibility of Fandom," as a guide, this article will examine the lavish behaviors of spectators during this film through the application of psychosocial elements of audience behavior such as sensibilities, affects, and authoritative investments. In this application, this essay provides further insight into how fandom and fan receptions characterize and determine the relationship of the "reader" to the cult film.

SURGE

I’m thinking of a word. Can you guess it? This word is considered negative and harsh. It’s generally avoided in everyday conversations. You wouldn’t normally hear this word spoken by professors or sophisticated celebrities. It starts with an F… Do you know it?

That’s right folks! It’s “feminist”. [excerpt]

Orchestral Conducting: Study And Performance Of Orchestral Works By Haydn, Wagner, Strauss And Martinů, Jan Honza Cervenka

Music Honors Projects

This project served as an immersive experience in orchestral conducting, which encompassed score study, ensemble organization, rehearsal and performance. The project was split into two distinct parts: First, in the fall semester of 2012, I rehearsed the Macalester Orchestra in Bohuslav Martinů's Memorial to Lidice and conducted the work in December of 2012. The second part occurred in the spring semester of 2013, when I assembled a chamber orchestra of Macalester students and community members to rehearse and perform a concert of three works: Franz Joseph Haydn's Notturno in C Major, Hob. II:25, Richard Wagner's Siegfried Idyll and Richard …

Ideal And Ordinary Language In Plato's Cratylus, Franco Trivigno Mar 2013

Ideal And Ordinary Language In Plato's Cratylus, Franco Trivigno

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Interpreters of Plato’s Cratylus are faced with a puzzle. If Socrates’ etymologies (397a-421c) are intended to be parodies, as many have thought,[1] what is the status of the imitation theory of letters (421c-427d), which provides the theoretical foundation for etymology and, as some have thought, indicates Plato’s ambition to construct an ideal language?[2] In this paper, I focus on three questions: [1] whether Plato thought that imitation provided a suitable basis for an ideal language; [2] whether Plato thought that the development of an ideal language would be philosophical possible or desirable; [3] whether he thought that ordinary …
