The Language Of Texting: Altering English Or A Language Of Its Own?, Elizabeth Gorney
The Language Of Texting: Altering English Or A Language Of Its Own?, Elizabeth Gorney
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Because language is so intangible, changes over time are not only unavoidable, they also are common and expected. Language is not the same today as it was when it originated; it is not the same today as it was last week. Phrases become "so yesterday" and expressions from a hundred years ago have been entirely eliminated from our language. There are many reasons for changeculture, technology, events in history- but the most influential catalyst for change in today's era is technology. Things like email, texting, and Facebook …
The Discourses Of Vincent Chase, Eric Wolf
The Discourses Of Vincent Chase, Eric Wolf
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
There is a common notion that those who make it big, whether it be as a professional athlete, a Grammy award-winning artist, or as an A-list actor, forget where they came from. Fame and fortune go to their heads and they become completely different people than they once were prior to their fame. Though fictional, one could make the argument that Vincent Chase, the protagonist of H.B.O.'s critically acclaimed series Entourage, underwent this drastic shift as the show progressed. One way of analyzing this possible alteration is …
Locked In The Classroom: Teachers Coming Out To Students, Alicia Vann
Locked In The Classroom: Teachers Coming Out To Students, Alicia Vann
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
The use of the "S" word among students and teachers can become quite controversial. Sexuality is becoming a topic of open discussion, but also one of avoidance. The process of "coming out" about one's homosexuality is a long and hard progression. This is largely due to people assuming that heterosexuality is the sexual identity of those around them. Due to the assumption of heterosexuality, homosexuals have a harder time "coming out" to others. This course becomes harder for teachers than for other homosexuals, as teachers are seen …
Women In Medicine, Tierney Sullivan
Women In Medicine, Tierney Sullivan
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
It seems that most individuals regardless of gender, race or ethnicity are in a constant rat race to keep up with the demands of modern day society and be as successful as possible. Looking at a college population, everyone has high goals and ambitions and is hoping to be the best in the field they enter. However, women are faced with the dilemma of what to do when life puts another barrier up around us. Women have gained the access to equality of education that we hoped …
The Inequality Of Sport: Women < Men, Valarie Hanson
The Inequality Of Sport: Women < Men, Valarie Hanson
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
It has been 30 years since Title IX legislation granted women equal playing time, but the male-dominated world of sports journalism has yet to catch up with the law. Coverage of women's sports lags far behind men's and focuses on female athletes' femininity and sexuality over their achievements on the court and field. While female athleticism challenges gender norms, women athletes continue to be depicted in traditional roles that reaffirm their femininity - as wives and mothers or sex objects. By comparison, male athletes are framed according …
Didacticism And The Male Reader In Samuel Richardson's Pamela, Maria Zahid
Didacticism And The Male Reader In Samuel Richardson's Pamela, Maria Zahid
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
One might say that Samuel Richardson's 18th century novel Pamela is essentially a love story that, like the chick lit of today, appeals mostly to a female audience. Contrary to the stereotype that women were the only ones who liked reading such works is the fact that males were also avid novelreaders. Admittedly, male readership is often a barely-trodden segment in the pathway of the study of novels - particularly novels such as Pamela, Frances Burney's Evelina, and Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Considering Richardson's emphasis …
Prisoners Of War Camps In Rochester - Were They Humane?, Ryan Mckelvie
Prisoners Of War Camps In Rochester - Were They Humane?, Ryan Mckelvie
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
After the American involvement in the Second World War, labor issues became more prevalent because so many workers from Rochester either enlisted or were drafted into the ranks of the US Army. Also, many farmers realized they could make more money off of high wage paying industrial jobs in the cities. In order to provide a sufficient amount of produce and other harvested good, prisoners of war were used for the first time as laborers to help the war effort. It was a bitter irony, being a …
The Death And Resurrection: Necessary For Salvation?, Thomas Whalen
The Death And Resurrection: Necessary For Salvation?, Thomas Whalen
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Salvation comes through Jesus Christ, but what does that truly mean? Since the death of Christ, people have been pondering this ultimate question. Whether it has been a personal journey to understand the risen Christ, or if it has been a professional career, all Christians have tried to deepen their understanding of true mystery of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Due to these various inquiries, there have been numerous hypotheses and theories concerning the Resurrection, and in turn sheds light on who God is, who Jesus was, …
Under The Watchful Eye: The Highly Intrusive Nature Of Facial Recognition Technology, Rocco Carzo
Under The Watchful Eye: The Highly Intrusive Nature Of Facial Recognition Technology, Rocco Carzo
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Facial recognition technology, or FRT, has the potential to provide numerous benefits, both to individual persons and to society as a whole. Among these benefits, convenience for everyday tasks and increased safety/security are possible. However, the likely benefits that FRT can provide are overshadowed by one major weakness of the technology: the invasion of one's privacy. FRT intrudes on the lives of all people. This can potentially lead to false accusations and/or people altering their lifestyles. Because people never know when or where they are being watched, …
Taming The Shrew Within: Internalized Misogyny In Shakespeare's 1 Henry Iv, Sarah Christy
Taming The Shrew Within: Internalized Misogyny In Shakespeare's 1 Henry Iv, Sarah Christy
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Surely, the frequent occurrence of "margin" and all of its forms in these examinations of 7 Henry IV is not accidental; the play's female characters are undoubtedly marginalized. Only three appear, and so to begin with, the male characters predominate. Because the depictions of men are more readily available, the men themselves are diverse: their personalities, views, and behaviors completely individual. For the women, however, there is very little room for diversity; while there are undeniable differences amongst the three women presented—while they come from different backgrounds, …
Who Owns A Woman's Body?, Karyssa Tuthill
Who Owns A Woman's Body?, Karyssa Tuthill
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Every hour, approximately eight women around the world die as a result of complications from unsafe induced abortions. Almost half of those who survive are hospitalized due to complications including hemorrhage and sepsis. Roe v. Wade is becoming a faded memory from the past as U.S. states place further restrictions. Abortion is a worldwide issue that needs to be addressed now. Too many women are putting themselves at risk to obtain one of modern medicine's safest procedures. Not only should abortion be legalized on a global-level, but …
An Examination Of Artificial Reproduction Versus Adoption: Taking On The Test-Tube, Marie Heberger
An Examination Of Artificial Reproduction Versus Adoption: Taking On The Test-Tube, Marie Heberger
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Human self-knowledge continues to increase monumentally, as well as the accompanying consequences. One aspect of human life that is being conquered is reproduction. While it doesn't take a genius to procreate naturally, technologies to make artificial reproduction possible are becoming more popular. Men and women who cannot conceive children naturally are getting help, and this help is leading to many ethical dilemmas and scientific questions and dilemmas. By being swept away with the abilities to make children in a lab, there are forgotten children born into unfortunate …
Male Friendship And Sodomy In Twelfth Night, Raea Dimassino
Male Friendship And Sodomy In Twelfth Night, Raea Dimassino
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
"Male friendship is, indeed, the basis on which civil society is founded" (Montaigne 220). While analyzing Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare, it is essential to understand the great value that society placed on male friendship during the Renaissance time period. In his essay "Of Friendship," Michel de Montaigne attempts to demonstrate the very slight distinction between male-male friendship and homoerotic behavior between men. Some argue that throughout Twelfth Night, the thin line between male-male friendship and homoeroticism is discreetly played upon. However, closer examination of the relationships …
A Voice Of Peace: Mother Teresa, Sidita Kushi
A Voice Of Peace: Mother Teresa, Sidita Kushi
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
"The fruit of silence is prayer; the fruit of prayer is faith; the fruit of faith is love; the fruit of love is service; the fruit of service is peace" (Collopy, 31). Service and love for the destitute were Mother Teresa's methods to bring the world one step closer to peace. The extraordinary nun lived a life of self-sacrifice within the Catholic Church. She sacrificed her health, comfort, family and all worldly goods to dedicate her every breath to improving the lives of the poor in India, …
Female Athletes In The Media: Under Representation And Inadequacy, Jessica Shaller
Female Athletes In The Media: Under Representation And Inadequacy, Jessica Shaller
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
A content analysis of Sports Illustrated covers determined there is an under representation of female athletes in print media. Also, because of the sexualized manner in which female athletes are portrayed, they suffer from inadequate depiction. Women in sports suffer from insufficient media coverage, not only in regards to their lack of presence in major sports publications but also in their stereotypical depiction in print journalism.
Extramarital Sexuality, Monogamy, And Mate Poaching: Evolutionary And Societal Forces That Define Sexual Behaviors And Roles For Men And Women, Jason Northrup
Extramarital Sexuality, Monogamy, And Mate Poaching: Evolutionary And Societal Forces That Define Sexual Behaviors And Roles For Men And Women, Jason Northrup
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
Through the discussion of prevalence of extramarital sexuality (EMS), jealousy, domestic violence, monogamy, marriage, evolutionary theories, and mate poaching, a theme emerges as human sexuality finds a medium between social and cultural constructs and evolutionary constructs within the context of male and female differences. It is suggested that mate poaching has transpired due to monogamy and marriage being the defining factors of human sexual relations where needs are not being met. Also, there exists several significantly diverse sexual roles and behaviors between males and females. Men are more interested in sexual novelty and variety, whereas women are more interested in …
Use Of Nasonia Vitripennis To Evaluate Genomic Imprinting And Haplodiploid Inheritance, Carolyn Fisher
Use Of Nasonia Vitripennis To Evaluate Genomic Imprinting And Haplodiploid Inheritance, Carolyn Fisher
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
During fertilization, male and female gametes fuse and a diploid organism is generated. However, in some cases, not all of the genes from a parental genome are expressed. Such instances are known as genomic imprinting—when a gene from the genome of one parent is expressed and the respective gene from the other parental genome is silenced. When the gene that is meant to be expressed is absent or not functioning correctly, a genetic disorder can occur. In humans, such genetic disorders include Prader-Willi, Angelman, Beckwith-Wiedemann, and Silver-Russell syndromes. This experiment studies the effects of genomic imprinting in the parasitic wasp …
"Most Blessed Of Women": An Exegetical Study Of The Roles Of Women Under Patriarchy In Judges 5:24-31, Tamara Dixon
"Most Blessed Of Women": An Exegetical Study Of The Roles Of Women Under Patriarchy In Judges 5:24-31, Tamara Dixon
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
The Old Testament book of Judges is often cited for its violent and destructive depictions, since the textual episodes relate to the aggressive nature of war, the erosion of interpersonal relationships from deception, and the immorality of the Israelites. The integrity of Yahweh's chosen people steadily degenerates until the climatic conclusion of Judges wherein the Israelites act out belligerent aggression upon each other in tribal civil warfare. Despite the collective disregard for the covenant's provision of monotheistic faithfulness as established between the people and Yahweh, the deity …
Immortal Remembrance, Michelle Bopp
Immortal Remembrance, Michelle Bopp
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the article's first paragraph.
Many monuments stand to remind us of horror, violence and people lost. The Vietnam Memorial and Auschwitz are stark reminders of the consequences of war. How do we feel when reading the 58,325 names on "the Wall?" Can we sense the horror (when) inside a gas chamber? Memorials exist to provoke a somber reaction, promoting peace. Joan Didion, the author of Salvador, compares how the Metropolitan Cathedral and Pablo Picasso's Guernica convey their anti-war sentiments.
