“Business Spanish Certification Program And The Concept Of Test Validity”, Pamela Dupont Nickell
Collection of Engaged Learning
This Engaged Learning Project culminated in the production of a study guide titled “México: Entorno cultural y de negocios, guía práctica para entender las relaciones bilaterales entre México y Estados Unidos” [“Mexico: A Cultural and Business Environment, Practical Guide for Understanding Bilateral Relations between Mexico and the United States”] and a complete exam. First, this report explains the project’s purpose and goals. Second, the report explores the important concept of “test validity” in creating and organizing the project’s study guide and exam. Finally, the author discusses various conclusions regarding the project’s outcomes. The project’s members include Pamela Nickell and Bryce …
Ruth: The Power Of Personality And The Comedic Promise Of Deliverance, Elisabeth German, Dr. Steve Walker
Ruth: The Power Of Personality And The Comedic Promise Of Deliverance, Elisabeth German, Dr. Steve Walker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For my project, I wrote a chapter for Dr. Walker’s book on humor and the Bible entitled, Man Thinks, God Laughs. The purpose of the book is to teach readers to see the text of the Bible through a helpful (albeit atypical) lens: that of humor. While reading the Bible with a purey straight-faced approach, we can often miss beautiful and inspiring moral lessons that simply were not visible without the reader’s awareness of the comedy contained therein.

Choosing Not To Believe: Realistic Unrealism In The Winter's Tale, Rachel Olson
Choosing Not To Believe: Realistic Unrealism In The Winter's Tale, Rachel Olson
Student Works
The romantic elements of mixing genres and the influence of the supernatural within Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale have led to the critics' rejection of the play. Leontes's, the tragic hero's, interaction with the oracle in the play thus becomes a metaphor for this rejection, as it is a rejection seemingly based on a desire for realism. In reality, it is a rejection predicated on an inability to recognize that the romantic elements of the play are in fact what makes it realistic, a belief that is essential to understanding and appreciating the message of the play. The mishmash of genres …

2012-2013 Exceptions Rule: No Compromise
In 1913, the audience at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées erupted in one of the most infamous riots of the 20th century. The cause? A revolution in music, namely the premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s primal Le sacre du printemps, or The Rite of Spring. For the piece’s centennial, virtuosi pianists Sarah Rothenberg and Marilyn Nonken have created The Grand Gesture, a stark deconstruction of Stravinsky’s masterpiece. Add to the mix Olivier Messiaen’s equally uproarious Visions de l’Amen (1946) and you have an evening of experimental classics defying convention.

Dr. Snook And The Coed: The Theora Hix Affair And Murder, James R. Hennessy
Annual Conference Presentations, Papers, and Posters
Dr. James Howard Snook was born in South Lebanon, Ohio in Warren County in 1879. He was both an alumnus and later a faculty member of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1922 Dr. Snook married Helen Marple and had a daughter. In 1926 Dr. Snook began an affair with an OSU medical student, Theora Hix. The affair lasted about 2 years. I'D Say I Had Eyes Again: Redeeming Shakespeare's Gloucester For The Blind, Nyssa Silvester
I'D Say I Had Eyes Again: Redeeming Shakespeare's Gloucester For The Blind, Nyssa Silvester
Student Works
In the recent rise of disability studies, scholars like Georgina Kleege have drawn attention to the lack of role models for the blind in classic literature. Instead, literature tends to perpetuate harmful stereotypes of blindness, including blindness accompanied by compensatory powers and blindness as punishment for sin. Shakespeare's King Lear would seem to fall into these stereotypical traps in its treatment of Gloucester during the Dover Cliff scene, where his son Edgar supposedly fools him into thinking he's jumped off a towering cliff. Based on textual evidence, though, we can read Gloucester as collaborating with Edgar in constructing this scene …

Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project engaged students in arts-based research of the rock art of Anasazi, Fremont and other ancient cultures in central and southern Utah. Their research had three components: (1) A review of research literature describing the history and interpretations of this ancient art, place-based education, and the issues of educating the indigenous people of Utah and the American Southwest. (2) A visual documentation of this ancient rock art in its various locations that includes photography, drawing and painting. (3) A scholarly presentation of the background research and the visual documentation that incorporates arts-based research methodology. This project will began during …
