The Childrens’ Literacy Project: “Restoring The Love Of Reading”, Melissa Manwill, Robert Barrett
The Childrens’ Literacy Project: “Restoring The Love Of Reading”, Melissa Manwill, Robert Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project began as a desire to try my hand at making a graphic novel. I’d never done it before. Neither had my classmates. We had also never made a collaborative art project in the way that the animation program makes a film each year. Those two desires culminated in a 12-person team compiling an anthology of graphic novels to address illiteracy by helping students ages 9-14 get excited and stay excited about reading. The concept is like the children’s TV show Wishbone. You target the reluctant readers who are 9-14 years old, and you give them a teaser of …
Bridging The Classical Literature And Youth, Soljee Lee, Robert Barrett
Bridging The Classical Literature And Youth, Soljee Lee, Robert Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this project was to create a medium that will bridge between the youth and the classical literature in order to address increasing epidemic of child illiteracy in this visual dominant world. The proposed solution was to introduce the classics to youth in the form of graphic novels; therefore, the goal of this project was the execution of the hypothesis and the examination of the result through audience response. It was also intended to serve as a tool to emulate the professional publishing market so that a student illustrator may become familiar with the function/characteristics of the market, …
Chronicle Of A Country: French Oral Histories, Jacob Johnson, Dr. Dean Duncan
Chronicle Of A Country: French Oral Histories, Jacob Johnson, Dr. Dean Duncan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Our project is a creative approach to documenting French culture through the words and experiences of its citizens. We traveled to France and interviewed many people, learning a great deal about what happiness means to people from this country. Our questions were simple: Could you tell us a story from a time in your life when you were happy? And could you tell us one from when you were sad? Overall, we found both great variety in their responses, as well as common themes throughout many of the stories they told. The most common element that the people interviewed connected …
Curriculum Adaption Highlighting Strengths Of Students With Adhd, Katie Dooley, Daniel Barney
Curriculum Adaption Highlighting Strengths Of Students With Adhd, Katie Dooley, Daniel Barney
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In accepting this research grant my objective was to better understand the characteristics of ADHD and to regard these characteristics as strengths that could be seen as assets in a classroom. When I began this research I was hopeful that I would find many articles discussing the positive traits of students with ADHD; however, disappointingly, I read far more articles explaining how to control or manage the students so that they would better fit into our ideal traditional classroom. For example, in “Treatment of ADHD in School Settings” the authors state, “The goal of school intervention is to contain and …
Restoring The Love Of Reading, Renee Bates, Robert Barrett
Restoring The Love Of Reading, Renee Bates, Robert Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Over the course of the past 15 months I have begun a project which I’m excited to say has helped me discover a new part of my family history as well as create a piece of art which I hope to share in the homes of many families. As a part of the ORCA, I proposed to write and illustrate a piece of literature based on the folklore tale The Changeling. By creating a tangible book to be held by children and parents together, my ultimate goal was to stray from the overwhelming surge in digital media and to restore …
An Analysis Of Vocal Development Principles And Practices In Hungarian Music Education, Catherine Golding, Jerry Jaccard
An Analysis Of Vocal Development Principles And Practices In Hungarian Music Education, Catherine Golding, Jerry Jaccard
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In this study, we were able to further the music education research in Hungary that Dr. Jerry Jaccard has been implementing for many years. Hungary has one of the most sophisticated and successful music education systems in the world. My research group and I will be using this information we found to improve our music education system in the United States. We each had a specific area of research. I focused on the effect of physical movement on vocal development. In Hungary, they use the Kodaly Music Education System. In the United States, we use a modified version of it. …

An Analysis Of Choral Development Practices In Hungarian Music Education, Karissa Baker, Jerry Jaccard
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For my ORCA research project, I spent two weeks in Hungary studying the Hungarian music education system, with a particular emphasis on choral development. From May 4 through May 18, I traveled with my faculty mentor, Jerry Jaccard, and three other student researchers: Catherine Golding, Bethany Richards, and Christy Ripa. We divided our time in Hungary between the cities of Budapest, Kecskement, Debrecen, and Nyiregyhaza, observing music classes and private lessons, interviewing conductors, teachers, and school administrators, and attending musical performances. In so doing, we were exposed to many practices, philosophies, and ideas that will inform our future teaching as …
Recognizing Faces: Women’S Portraits On The Salt Lake City And County Building, Diana Lauritzen, Dr. James Swensen
Recognizing Faces: Women’S Portraits On The Salt Lake City And County Building, Diana Lauritzen, Dr. James Swensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Sixteen women’s portraits grace the capitals of four piers at the two main entrances to the Salt Lake City and County Building, a building which though controversial at the time, serves today as the icon of the city’s logo. Much like the details on the sandstone from which they were carved, their names have disappeared with time and only so much can be restored. My paper, which I presented as my senior thesis on April 6, 2012 at the BYU Museum of Art, explored who these women were, why they merited a prominent position on the building, and what their …

Mariachi-Dachi, Kevin Merriman, Ryan Woodward
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Besides the fact that this is something I’ve fantasized doing since I was a kid, this was also the perfect project for me to help propel my career forward as an artist. As a student, it’s easy to get caught up in finishing assignments for the sake of getting a good grade – and as an art student, this can become a very dangerous thing. Having more complete thoughts and finished products speak much louder to potential employers, and when art students are too focused on finishing something just for a grade, they risk not having things in their portfolio …
Commercial Theatre Practices In Non-Profit Theatre, Andrew Joy, Jeffrey Martin
Commercial Theatre Practices In Non-Profit Theatre, Andrew Joy, Jeffrey Martin
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This creative project compared two case studies in theatrical producing. Simply put, being a producer is being in charge of finding the material to produce (i.e. a play, musical, dance program etc.), making all arrangements to put that material on stage, and being financially responsible for the project from the beginning to end. Commercial theatre “operates without subsidy and is centered in New York City.1” Other types of theatre that were a part of this project were non-profit, regional, community and educational theatre but will be referred to as non-profit theatre.

Hungary’S Undeniable Success In Music Education: An Analysis Of Public And Private Teaching Principles And Practices In Hungarian Music Education, Bethany Richards, Jerry Jaccard
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of my trip to Hungary was to observe and analyze the Hungarian music education system, realize its strengths, and adapt what I learned into my teaching here in America. My specific research assignment was to investigate the relationship between private and public music lessons and how by working together they can be most effective.

Closing The Book On Libraries? Challenging The Idea That Libraries Are Obsolete And Discovering Why They Are More Important Now Than Ever Before, Kayla Hampton
Honors Theses
Libraries have been a part of civilization for thousands of years, but many people are beginning to believe that the information centers are becoming obsolete due to the Internet and other technological advancements. This thesis challenges that opinion by focusing on the past, present and future of libraries. In “The Past” section, the historical background of libraries is discussed, beginning with the first libraries in Greece during the fourth century B.C. to the first public library that opened in the United States, which was located in Peterborough, New Hampshire. During the portion of the thesis that discusses the challenges that …

The Forgotten Pandemic: A Short History Of The 1918-1919 Influenza Outbreak & The Effect On Kalamazoo And Western State Normal School, Katie Jones
Honors Theses
The influenza outbreak of 1918-1919 began its widespread destruction in September of 1918. Before the outbreak was over, more than twenty-five percent of the United States population became ill. However, the United States was not alone in this silent war. The influenza outbreak (named the “Spanish Flu” or “La Grippe” at this time) killed approximately fifty million people worldwide and is still considered to be the “world’s worst pandemic” since the onset of written history. The state of Michigan, including Kalamazoo and the campus of Western State Normal School were not immune to this highly contagious virus. From October 1918 …

Continuums: Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity Leadership Program, Jacob Smallegan
Honors Theses
In 2011, Western Michigan University was one of three Michigan universities to be ranked in the Top 25 Gay Friendly Universities according to Newsweek and the Daily Beast. This is not surprising considering WMU’s current 4.5 out of 5 score on the Campus Pride Index. The Campus Pride Index lists 362 universities and WMU is one of 22 with a score of 4.5. In the LGBT-Friendly Campus Report, there are only eight areas identified that are not currently in place at WMU, one of which is an LGBT studies program. I decided, given my interest in the Student Affairs …

Natural Reverberation And The Phantom Of The Opera, Douglas Olsen, Troy Streeter
Journal of Undergraduate Research
They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway, but potentially more incredible is the sound achieved by the audio engineers of the famous theatre district. These artists apply the world’s best audio technologies to create the sound of the American Musical. One of the most notable sound experiences a theatregoer can find in New York is The Phantom of the Opera, the longest running musical in Broadway History. This production is famous for the powerful music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It has a high level of spectacle-focused entertainment, from flying chandeliers to the Phantom’s mystical presence being audibly …

The Children’S Literacy Project, Chrisanne Hernandez, Robert Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this project was two fold. First, we wanted to create a literacy tool that could be used by educators to help bridge the gap between picture books and novels. Second, we wanted to expand our skills and knowledge through the art form of sequential storytelling. It was interesting because as we began this journey our desire to help others was the main goal. But over the year, I’ve found that I, myself, will be one of the largest beneficiaries of this project.
Essential Oboe Repair, Jordan Hatch, Dr. Geralyn Giovannettii
Essential Oboe Repair, Jordan Hatch, Dr. Geralyn Giovannettii
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Oboists face many problems relating to the mechanism of their instruments that render them unplayable. These problems occur frequently due to routine use. Fortunately, solutions exist, but few people know how to apply them. With sufficient knowledge and experience, most of these problems could be resolved quickly and inexpensively. The purpose of this project was (1) to research and learn oboe repair and (2) to teach local oboists about repairs they can do themselves. Repairs that I studied were mechanism adjustments, crack prevention, octave vent cleaning, bumper cork replacement, pad replacement, and tenon cork replacement.

An Analysis Of Music Specialist Principles And Practices In Hungarian Music Education, Christy Ripa, Jerry Jaccard
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Contrary to what I expected when our team arrived in Budapest, Hungary, I found that it was not much different from our American cities. While they are speaking a different language and have different cultural expectations and norms, they wear modern clothes and live modern lives with indoor plumbing, electricity, public transportation, and the like. The story is not the same, however, for the small villages that are scattered across the Hungarian countryside. These small villages that are nearly forgotten are where their musical folk traditions live on. Sadly, because we only had two weeks to spend in Hungary, my …

Theatre Triad: An Approach To Devising Collaborative Ensemble Theatre, Keith G. Fitzgerald
Theatre Triad: An Approach To Devising Collaborative Ensemble Theatre, Keith G. Fitzgerald
Theses and Dissertations
Theatre Triad is a new approach to devising collaborative ensemble theatre starting with the three main components of Performance: Voice, Movement, and Text. These components were deconstructed and reconstructed in pairs as the basis for the devising process. The performance process begins with creating an ensemble followed by four steps: exploring the theatrical genres affiliated with the pairings of Voice and Movement, Movement and Text, Voice and Text, and completed with reintegrating all three components. Through this process many things occur, a new play is created, ensemble members focus on exploring the elements of acting and performance, and a strong …
