Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
There is an ever widening gap between conflict resolution policy makers and scholars—a tragedy given practitioners’ dire need for new ideas to help resolve deadly conflicts and the growing knowledge researchers have to share. Research tends to swing like a pendulum between analytic and rigorous methods and accessible and relevant approaches. We reject this tradeoff. We believe that research can be simultaneously rigorous and relevant, and analytic and accessible. Given the devastating loss of life associated with armed conflict, the need for translating research results into policy prescriptions is especially strong in peacemaking. The goal of this issue of the …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
"The ball is rolling," the Sentinel crowed, "and it is no time now to faint or falter in the good and noble work of crushing rebels and traitors abroad and at home, and bringing back to its original glory our time-honored Union."
The Union would be saved, the Sentinel was sure, by the pure and sustained love and loyalty of her people. Gettysburg was showing her mettle in that department in the waning days of April 1863, as citizens gathered to follow the lead of others to the east in forming a Loyal Union League in the Adams county seat. …

Through The Body: Corporeality, Subjectivity, And Empathy In Contemporary American Art, Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt
Through The Body: Corporeality, Subjectivity, And Empathy In Contemporary American Art, Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation considers the relationship between embodied experience, subjectivity, and empathy expressed in artworks created and exhibited in New York in the early 1990s and linked with identity politics. I focus on works that represented or evoked bodies and elicited viscerally somatic responses from viewers. As I demonstrate, the multicultural and post-structuralist interpretive frameworks applied to these artworks hinged on implicitly antagonistic notions of subjectivity which undercut the works' affective potential. In particular, such models disregarded the powerful epistemological import of corporeality in favor of discursive constructions. Through three paired case studies, I investigate how these artists engaged with emerging …
Reading, Travel, And The Pedagogy Of Growing Up In Late Nineteenth-Century Germany, M. Stanley Majors
Reading, Travel, And The Pedagogy Of Growing Up In Late Nineteenth-Century Germany, M. Stanley Majors
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This project brings together the domestic world of young adult reading with the foreign world of international travel that informed German experience at the end of the nineteenth century. By uniting these two ostensibly disparate realms under one interpretive frame, I offer a new perspective on the theory and practice of young-adult reading at the turn of the last century and the role this reading about travel played in the development of sense of self and sense of place within a national body.
My analysis reads specific youth literature about travel: Brigitte Augusti, Friedrich Pajeken) against depictions of youth reading …

Some Account Of The Art Of Photogenic Drawing, Joseph Minek
Some Account Of The Art Of Photogenic Drawing, Joseph Minek
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an overview of the processes and procedures used in the production of my artistic practice. In my work, I explore notions such as the ambiguity of the photographic image, what constitutes an image or object as photographic, and the unexplored possibilities of the medium through surface and mark making. In addition, I draw inspiration from artists Wolfgang Tillmans, William Henry Fox Talbot, and Marco Breuer as entrance points to my conceptual interests. For viewers, my work generates an internal dialogue about the limits of the photographic medium.
My Mechanics Of Justification, Veronika Pausova
My Mechanics Of Justification, Veronika Pausova
Theses and Dissertations
This document examines the theory behind the process leading to my paintings, as well as the content of the images I use. The former will invoke romanticism, infinite possibilities, and the need for having certain parameters and flexible rules. The latter will talk about sentimentality and contemporary culture. I will explain the mechanics of justifying the choice of a particular way of painting: the push and pull between the loaded content of an image versus the language of painting itself.
Exhibiting Berthe Morisot After The Advent Of Feminist Art History, Kristie Couser
Exhibiting Berthe Morisot After The Advent Of Feminist Art History, Kristie Couser
Theses and Dissertations
Feminist art historians reassessed French Impressionist Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) throughout the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, a period in which her work coincidentally received steady exposure in major museum exhibitions. This thesis examines how the feminist art historical project intersects with exhibitions that give prominence to Morisot’s work. Critical reviews by Morisot scholars argue that more frequent display of the artist’s work has not correlated to nuanced interpretation. Moreover, prominent feminist scholars and museum theorists maintain that curators virtually exclude their contributions. Attending to these recurrent concerns, this thesis charts shifts in emphases and inquiry in writing centered on …

Archives of an Activist: Celebrating the Donations of Rita Arditti to UMass Boston

Remarks By Ann Blum About Rita Arditti, The Abuelas, And Latin American Studies, Ann Blum
Archives of an Activist: Celebrating the Donations of Rita Arditti to UMass Boston
From Ann Blum's remarks:
My own area of research is family history. Students and other scholars sometimes ask me why I study the family when there are other far more important, more politicaltopics. Rita’s activism and scholarship provide a ringing rejoinder. The family is political and it is key to our understanding of politics on intimate, national and global scales. Rita’swork with the Grandmothers centered on family. Her study embraced the complex interactions among three generations as family relations were projected onto national and international politics. The Argentine military regime was brutally astute: they made state terrorism a family affair. …
