Birds Of Prey, Shauna Kirkland

Theses and Dissertations

As a child growing up, I was always in love with the ritual of “dress up”. Whether it was my dolls, various reluctant pets, or myself, it was always an activity I loved. It is not surprising then that adornment has become the medium through which I express myself and bring my fantasy world to life. Jewelry and accessory have the potential to lead many lives. One particular piece can change entirely by putting it on one body as opposed to another, or by removing it to see it as an object. In fashion, the body is the canvas and …

Do You Fit The Alloy Mold? The Homogenization Of Structure And Audience In The Television Adaptations Of 'Gossip Girl,' 'Pretty Little Liars,' And 'The Vampire Diaries', Caitlin Murray Apr 2013

Do You Fit The Alloy Mold? The Homogenization Of Structure And Audience In The Television Adaptations Of 'Gossip Girl,' 'Pretty Little Liars,' And 'The Vampire Diaries', Caitlin Murray

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the ways in which the television adaptations of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and The Vampire Diaries become more homogenized during the adaptation process, thus contributing to an implied exclusivity from which Alloy, Inc.—the media and marketing company that owns these products—might benefit. This paper points out the ways in which the three products become structurally similar to one another during the adaptation process through the implementation of soap opera conventions. An exploration of consumption and class in each of the three works reveals an emphasis on class-based exclusivity in the adaptation process. Finally, a focus on …

Singing For The Actor: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Musical Theatre Training, Valerie Accetta Apr 2013

Singing For The Actor: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Musical Theatre Training, Valerie Accetta

Theses and Dissertations

Typically, singing training for the musical theatre student is divided into three subjects: music theory, private voice instruction and acting through song. By separating the study of the components of musical theatre performance, musical theatre programs reinforce this compartmentalization and few students are able to make connections between these components in performance. This thesis gives an account of my design of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of musical theatre, specifically a class I developed called Singing for the Actor. In this class, I focused on connecting three components of musical theatre singing: music theory, vocal production (specifically the Estill …

Anish Kapoor: The Formation Of A Global Art, Owen Duffy Apr 2013

Anish Kapoor: The Formation Of A Global Art, Owen Duffy

Theses and Dissertations

This study intends to investigate British artist Anish Kapoor’s stylistic formation in relationship to globalization, positing its history as a multiplicity, comprised of several competing localisms, including: minimalism; the traditions of modern painting; and the artist’s own personal diasporic narrative. It will demonstrate how Kapoor is a transgressive global artist, concerned not only with rethinking the longstanding question of artistic form, but also with the enduring process central to the cultural formation of subjects. Overall, this thesis will propose that Kapoor’s art in particular can be comprehended by the special liminal position it occupies between such polarities as modern and …

The Secret Life Of Schoolgirls, Emily A. Miano Apr 2013

The Secret Life Of Schoolgirls, Emily A. Miano

SURGE

Even as a Catholic, I hated Catholic school. I hated our uniforms. They were a horrible yellow and green, with skirts that felt like heavy curtains and shirts made of 2% cotton. On hot days the shirts would stick to your body and slowly creep up to your armpits every time you moved.

So forget that Catholic School girl fantasy because there’s a lot of baggage that comes with those knee socks. [excerpt]
