Sapphic Reflections Of Feminine Creative Power And Male Interruption In The Works Of Virginia Woolf, Mollee Kaitlyn Shannon
Sapphic Reflections Of Feminine Creative Power And Male Interruption In The Works Of Virginia Woolf, Mollee Kaitlyn Shannon
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
With queer theory and gender studies, the knowledge that Virginia Woolf was probably bisexual has come to the forefront of scholarship concerning the writer and her works. With queer theory has come an interest in Sapphism, a term evoking Sappho, the only female lyric poet for whom any poetry remains. Sappho’s poetry reveals her to be a “lesbian”: a woman expressing homoerotic feelings for other women. The word Sapphist has become interchangeable with the word lesbian, and Virginia Woolf has been proven to be a Sapphist in that sense; however, Sapphism as a literary philosophy has remained untouched by scholars. …
From Unsung To High-Strung: The Development Of The Viola Through The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, As It Is Used To Introduce Fugues, Anthony Vincent Dell'osso
From Unsung To High-Strung: The Development Of The Viola Through The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, As It Is Used To Introduce Fugues, Anthony Vincent Dell'osso
Music
This paper looks at the development of the viola through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and considers why it has been used to introduce fugues more and more often. The viola has historically been an unimportant filler instrument, but beginning in the nineteenth century, and continuing to the present day, it has been given an increasingly important role in contrapuntal orchestral and chamber music. This study considers twelve pieces in which a fugue is launched by the viola.

If You Build It, They Will Come: A Study Of Imperial Design In Victorian Britain, Scarlett A. Jones
If You Build It, They Will Come: A Study Of Imperial Design In Victorian Britain, Scarlett A. Jones
Honors Theses
The Crystal Palace (1851) and Paddington Station (1854) utilized imperial design in their construction as a tool to infuse the British public with pride in the empire. This study considered how the buildings were discussed in the press and other descriptive materials, such as guidebooks and architectural critiques to provide a general perception of how imperial propaganda utilized descriptions of imperial design to garner support for the empire. The study concluded that the impact of imperial design as propaganda for the empire was influenced by the function of the buildings. Attitudes towards imperial design varied, hinting at a division in …

Classifier Constructions As Procedural Signs In American Sign Language, Stephen Perry Jones Ii
Classifier Constructions As Procedural Signs In American Sign Language, Stephen Perry Jones Ii
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I will be analyzing what has typically, in sign language literature, been termed classifiers and classifier constructions. I will be approaching them from the pragmatic perspective by applying Relevance Theory to explain their usage as representations that manipulate and modify their referents. The data comes from texts signed by native users of American Sign Language and are from academic lectures, interviews, narrative, and course curriculum. I have found that Relevance Theory adequately describes why and when classifiers constructions are used and that they function as a procedural referring expression.
Race, Power, And White Womanhood: The Obsessions Of Tom Watson And Thomas Dixon Jr., Tara Nicole Kowasic
Race, Power, And White Womanhood: The Obsessions Of Tom Watson And Thomas Dixon Jr., Tara Nicole Kowasic
Theses and Dissertations
Thomas Dixon Jr. (1864 -1946) and Thomas E. Watson (1856-1922), two controversial and radical figures, are often credited with the second coming of the Ku Klux Klan. Dixon, writer of novels and plays such as The Leopard’s Spots (1902) and The Clansman (1905), and Watson, politician, prolific writer, and publisher of Watson’s Magazine and The Jeffersonian, reached the masses and saturated popular culture with their racial agenda. As each of these men had especially long careers, this thesis focuses on particular times and specific issues. With Dixon, the writing of The Clansman (1905) and production of The Birth of a …

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Theses, Student Research, and Creative Work
My thesis show, Paragon Springs, is a play based on An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen. My first reading of the show leads me to hope that this undertaking will be profitable for all concerned. Paragon Springs, like the Ibsen play on which it is based, takes place in more than one location. This will contribute to my chances of having a set that might be a little more complicated and challenging than a basic unit set. My first concern was staging the show in the Studio and knowing we would have a smaller budget than …

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Theses, Student Research, and Creative Work
Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) opened the Fall 2012 season in the Howell Theatre on October 04, 2012 with Agravio. My thesis project was the technical direction of Agravio. As the technical director, I took the designer’s ideas and made them a reality on stage. My responsibilities included organization, construction drawings, ordering supplies, problem solving, supervising build and the budgeting of time, people and money. In the course of this thesis I will discuss the process I took to assure the set would be built on time and under budget, …

Representations Of Gothic Children In Contemporary Irish Literature: A Search For Identity In Patrick Mccabe's The Butcher Boy, Seamus Deane's Reading In The Dark, And Anna Burns' No Bones, Kelly Ratte
HIM 1990-2015
Ireland is not a country unfamiliar with trauma. It is an island widely known for its history with Vikings, famine, and as a colony of the English empire. Inevitably, then, these traumas surface in the literature from the nation. Much of the literature that was produced, especially after the decline in the Irish language after the Great Famine of the 1840s, focused on national identity. In the nineteenth century, there was a growing movement for Irish cultural identity, illustrated by authors John Millington Synge and William Butler Yeats; this movement was identified as the Gaelic Revival. Another movement in literature …

An Intersectional Comparison Of Female Agency In Toni Morrison's Sula And Wang Anyi's Song Of Everlasting Sorrow, Jordan Lynton
HIM 1990-2015
The opportunities created by the end of the Mao Era and legislature promoting the rights of African Americans and women in the mid-twentieth century allowed women of both cultures to break further into the literary scene and negotiate their own sense of agency through their work. Although Western feminism also grew rapidly throughout this period, its ethnocentric centering of gender prevented it from being a reliable lens with which to analyze the work of Chinese and African American women who experienced issues of race, class, and gender simultaneously. This caused Western feminists to evaluate the work of Chinese and African …
Shaming The Love Plot: Inconvenient Women Navigating Conventional Romance, Brittan Wilkey
Shaming The Love Plot: Inconvenient Women Navigating Conventional Romance, Brittan Wilkey
HIM 1990-2015
The love plot is one of the most widely consumed genres of fiction for women. Romance often dictates a woman's identity and her "story" or narrative, leaving little room for other avenues of self-development. However, when romance fails, even in the realm of fiction, women are left with shame. Shame might suggest a catastrophic aftereffect of the failure of women's initial investment of the love plot; however, I argue that shame functions in place of the love plot and helps to provide a critique of the oppressive and patriarchal nature of conventional romance. Using affect theory, I look at both …

Amid the mounting tension of their relationship, war looms in the background. What ensues is a testament to the transformational nature of a culture and its people. Gukundana seeks to illuminate injustices related to …
