Eating Spaces And Places: Examining The Latin@ Barrio, Chinatown, And Black Urban Space As Sites Of Collective And Social Imagination, Kathlynn E. Hinkfuss May 2013

Eating Spaces And Places: Examining The Latin@ Barrio, Chinatown, And Black Urban Space As Sites Of Collective And Social Imagination, Kathlynn E. Hinkfuss

American Studies Honors Projects

I focus on three specific neighborhood tropes that are commonly understood and accepted in the American social imagination: the Latin@ Barrio, Chinatown, and Black Urban Space. I examine how these three neighborhood tropes show up in and play out on physical examples of these spaces. I identify three currently existing neighborhoods in the Upper Midwest: the South Side of Milwaukee, Chinatown in Chicago, and North Minneapolis. To more specifically interrogate the connection between the abstract and concrete, I argue that specific sites of analysis in each neighborhood are symbolically and physically consumed: the Mexican restaurant “La Perla” in Milwaukee, the …

"Mich Beschäftigen Vor Allem Dinge, Die Sich In Meiner Umgebung Abspielen": Konstruktionen Des Privaten Und Des Öffentlichen In Der Literatur Der Brd Und Der Ddr, Christina E. Getaz

German and Russian Studies Honors Projects

Common knowledge assumes that capitalism and socialism structured life differently with regards to what was public and private. This paper critically investigates this notion, focusing not on property, but on the realm of ideas and personal experiences. With a basis in historical and theoretical notions of the public and private spheres as conceptualized by Hannah Arendt, I analyze critical works by Jurek Becker and Heinrich Böll written in the two German states in the 1970s. Focusing on the ways in which these works depict an entanglement of the public and the private, I show how the East- and West-German works …

Songs For The Nightingale, Michael Cotter May 2013

Songs For The Nightingale, Michael Cotter

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Ahead lies four rough chapters of a World War I fiction novel I have started earlier this semester as part of an ongoing English Honors Thesis project. The following pages represent an inkling of the research I have undertaken to start this project, but more importantly, they record the beginnings of my continual development in understanding that fiction is truly based around character. Utilizing the elements of craft I have learned from Bridgewater University’s various writing workshops, I submit four individuals that are the product of my imagination and ongoing effort. Fully conscious of the flaws within, I’m still proud …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

I teased this project a short while ago, and now that May has arrived history has begun coming back to life. Over the next three months, the men and women who walked Gettysburg's streets and crossed the Pennsylvania College campus will reenact their lives in the last few moments before Gettysburg changed irrevocably. As May creeps along, more characters will rise from the grave and begin reliving the past. [excerpt]

Naturalis Historia, Reconstructed, Sarah Briland May 2013

Naturalis Historia, Reconstructed, Sarah Briland

Theses and Dissertations

When Pliny the Elder wrote Naturalis Historia around 70 A.D., the idea of natural history contained and connected biology, geology, and mineralogy with the history of painting and sculpture. Art was an extension of the natural world as its materials were extracted from plants, animals, and, particularly, mined and quarried pigments, stone, and metals. In my developing body of work, Incidents of Naturalis Historia, Reconstructed, I combine wasps’ nests, architectural fragments, and other found objects excavated from my surrounding environment with elements of glass that resemble lichen, crystallization, and geologic specimens. These works simulate artifacts of an alternative history; one …

Hissār, Sohail Abdullah May 2013

Hissār, Sohail Abdullah

Theses and Dissertations

Hissaar is a noun and a verb, it is the periphery and the extremities, and the walls and the fortress. And it is to encircle, to wrap and to contain. This paper is an inexhaustive account of thoughts, experiences and lessons learned, of varying forms that influence my aesthetic sensibilities, my art-value system, and my art- ethical concerns. They provide for my art the impetus for its perpetual (and perhaps circular) journey. It is about finding connections between the fraying ends of free floating ideas. The following fragments explores how words make ideas, ideas make images, images make memory; memory …

Artificial Landscapes: Reflecting Interior Worlds, Vivian Zapata May 2013

Artificial Landscapes: Reflecting Interior Worlds, Vivian Zapata

Graduate School of Art Theses

In this study I examine ideas of nature, human nature, and artificial nature that are relevant to my work. I explain that the natural realm is a physical presence in the world and that it is also a cultural construct. My work is concerned with metaphorical representations of nature and I contextualize my artwork within the work of modern and contemporary artists who create artificial representations of nature that reference landscapes. I relate that I am disturbed by our current culture’s inharmonious relationship with the natural realm and explain how my work opposes our cultural anthropocentrism and the collective assumption …

The Apartment, Jeesun Choi May 2013

The Apartment, Jeesun Choi

English Honors Projects

Lenn never considered herself one of the foreigners in Bangkok. She believed that she was different from her privileged peers at international schools, the posse of multinational corporation workers and the unwitting tourists with a colonial mindset. But when she meets Jon Hayes Wichasak, a wandering luk khrueng, her conviction starts to crumble. She begins to question her motives behind returning to Bangkok and her desire for intimacy. Set on the road that stretches from the Thai-Cambodian border to the Chao Praya River, the novella explores expatriation in the twenty-first century.

The Search For A Greater Truth: Religion And Philosophy In Roman Egypt, Dana F. Michael May 2013

The Search For A Greater Truth: Religion And Philosophy In Roman Egypt, Dana F. Michael

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

When Cleopatra VII Philopator took her own life after Egypt’s defeat at Actium an empire died as the legend was born. Egypt, ruled by the Macedonian Ptolemys for three hundred years, was now a province of the Roman Empire. This death is more a political fiction of Rome’s, however, than any kind of real defeat. For while the government ran as that of a Roman territory, Egypt’s influence on the Mediterranean world and beyond was extensive.

Egypt was the grain basket of Rome, so the Emperors kept a close eye on the country. Romans of all classes, from governors to …

Locus, Claire Krueger May 2013

Locus, Claire Krueger

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores my practice as it has progressed into video and video installation. I detail my use of cinematic tropes and mechanisms as they function within a spatial installation. I discuss the relationship of my work to other artists such as Pierre Huyghe, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, and Kevin Cooley who also deal with themes of landscape, spatial displacement, and video viewing. My work has evolved to video installation from a need to experience the traditionally flat viewing plane of photography in a more experiential way. The Locus installation is multi sensory, in that it addresses smell, …

Nos Ancêtres, Les Pervers: Reading Queerly And Constructing The Homosexual Before The Closet (1810-1830), Gary C. Kilian Mr.

Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Honors Projects

Homosexuality is, popularly imagined, a twentieth-century phenomenon wherein medicine created homosexual identity and society worked to stigmatize it. Yet the proto-homosexual role can be traced to several notable historical figures before the rise of medicine at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, especially through literature, and this is most apparent in France, which had been the first country to decriminalize same-sex relations in private after the adoption of the Napoleonic Code. But how do we understand same-sex desire and homosexuality before the homosexual existed as such while respecting the oftentimes-unclear nuances of human …
