Al-Khwārizmī: Founder Of Classical Algebra, Calvin Jongsma

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2013

Adopting a historically defensible definition of “algebra,” we will begin by exploring a few examples of algebra prior toal-Khwarizmi. We will then examine what algebra became through al-Khwarizmi’s work. In conclusion, we will assess thehistorical importance of al-Khwarizmi’s contributions for developments in European algebra.

Expanding Jonathan Edwards’ Typology Program: The Bell Curve As A Type Of Christ, Jason Wilson Jun 2013

Expanding Jonathan Edwards’ Typology Program: The Bell Curve As A Type Of Christ, Jason Wilson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2013

Over two hundred years after his death, an unfinished notebook of Jonathan Edwards’ was published for the first time in1993. Edwards was a father of the Evangelical movement, but because his work on typology was not published until recently, it has received almost no attention. In his notebook, Edwards makes an explicit argument for extending biblical typology to nature in a biblically grounded manner. This study is an attempt to extend that research program into mathematics/statistics.We will consider the following proposition, “The normal distribution (the graph of which is the bell curve) is a biblical type of Christ.” The basic …

"As Our Elders Taught Us To Speak It": Chinuk Wawa And The Process Of Creating Authenticity, Kylie N. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chinuk Wawa (also called Chinook Jargon) began as a trading language of the Pacific Northwest in the late eighteenth century. As it developed, it became the major heritage language of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, an intertribal nation located in Oregon. Now, as older speakers of the language pass on, there is an effort by the Grand Ronde to revitalize this language not only on the Grand Ronde Reservation, but also in nearby Portland, Oregon. However, revitalization can be a complicated process, as tribal leaders attempt to define Chinuk to maintain its traditions while adapting its vocabulary for …

Penning The Shipper-Worthy Screenplay: Exploration Of Network Television Situational Comedy And The Crime Procedural, Kacie Henderson Jun 2013

Penning The Shipper-Worthy Screenplay: Exploration Of Network Television Situational Comedy And The Crime Procedural, Kacie Henderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Network television writers often utilize ongoing romantic turmoil as a plot device to form loyal fan bases called "shippers," viewers who become deeply invested in the romantic relationships between their favorite television couples. For my thesis, I explored the shipper paradigm and the differences between network sitcoms and crime procedurals by creating one spec script The Big Bang Theory and another for Bones. I used research and my own personal experiences to analyze both series and write episodes that could fit within the established canons of both programs. Through the writing process I came to understand something very important …

Exploring Metaphor In The Great Gatsby, Dan Gleason Jun 2013

Exploring Metaphor In The Great Gatsby, Dan Gleason

The Great Gatsby Unit

In this lesson, students engage with one approach to metaphor and then apply that learning to metaphors in Great Gatsby. To start, students learn about I. A. Richards’s definition of metaphor as the link between tenor (topic) and vehicle (way of thinking about it). They then generate some metaphors by randomly combining tenors and vehicles in order to understand how the parts interrelate. Finally, the class interacts with the messier, more beautiful face of metaphor by working through, in groups, some key metaphors from the novel. Students identify the components of each metaphor (tenor, vehicle) and also consider what subtle …

Mentoring And Coaching As A Means Of Professional Development For Faculty At The National Outdoor Leadership School, Marco Johnson Jun 2013

Mentoring And Coaching As A Means Of Professional Development For Faculty At The National Outdoor Leadership School, Marco Johnson

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) faculty members are professional educators who work in small autonomous teams in remote wilderness settings with no direct supervision from program staff. Though there is a significant degree of autonomy from administrative oversight, the professional growth and development of NOLS faculty is an important institutional goal. Coaching and mentoring are strategies for engendering professional development of educators. Mentoring constitutes a long-term process utilizing formal and informal relationships for faculty development whereas coaching constitutes a formal relationship focusing on the coachee's growth and development in the immediate. Based on a review of the literature and the …

The Future Of Military Virtue: Autonomous Systems And The Moral Deskilling Of The Military, Shannon Vallor Jun 2013

The Future Of Military Virtue: Autonomous Systems And The Moral Deskilling Of The Military, Shannon Vallor

Philosophy

Autonomous systems, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), anti-munitions systems, armed robots, cyber attack and cyber defense systems, are projected to become the centerpiece of 21st century military and counter-terrorism operations. This trend has challenged legal experts, policymakers and military ethicists to make sense of these developments within existing normative frameworks of international law and just war theory. This paper highlights a different yet equally profound ethical challenge: understanding how this trend may lead to a moral deskilling of the military profession, potentially destabilizing traditional norms of military virtue and their power to motivate ethical restraint in the conduct of war. …

Robert Julius Trumpler And The Cosmos: The Contributions Of A Swiss American Astronomer, Kurt Winkler Jun 2013

Robert Julius Trumpler And The Cosmos: The Contributions Of A Swiss American Astronomer, Kurt Winkler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

S wiss American scientists have made many valuable contributions to a more precise understanding of the universe. Among the most influential of these was the astronomer, Robert Julius Trumpler, who did much to advance our knowledge of the Pleiades star cluster, the planet Mars, globular clusters , and the theories of his fellow Swiss American, Albert Einstein. Trumpler made his contributions at an important time in the development of astronomical theories that more accurately explained the nature of the universe, and his advances are still important today. He is also fondly remembered as one of the most significant astronomers of …

Carla Kelly, Ed. On The Upper Missouri: The Journal Of Rudolph Friederich Kurz, 1851-1852, Victoria M. Breting-Garcia

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Rudolph Friederich Kurz (January 8, 1818-October 16, 1871) was born in Langnau im Emmental located in the Bern Canton of Switzerland. His talents as an artist were cultivated from an early age, including an extended period of study in Paris where he met the brilliant scholar and explorer, Baron Alexander von Humboldt, and the renowned artist Karl Bodmer. On retrospect, no great effort is required to understand the influence of these early foundations on Kurz's deep attraction for the sublime aspects of the American frontier. Of note is the influence of the American wilderness on the minds and imaginations of …

Herbert Hoover And Belgian Relief, Albert Winkler Jun 2013

Herbert Hoover And Belgian Relief, Albert Winkler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Two Presidents of the United States, Dwight Eisenhower and Herbert Hoover, are known to have Swiss ancestry. Eisenhower is noted for his generalship in the Second World War and his presidential administration in a time of prosperity for the nation, while Hoover is often remembered only for his unpopular presidency during the Great Depression . This is unfortunate because Hoover contributed to the well-being and survival of many millions of people during times of grave food shortages. His efforts, which began with the feeding of the nation of Belgium during World War I, prevented starvation in many areas of the …

The "Violence" Of The Canon: Revisiting Contemporary Notions Of Canonical Forms, Colby Dickinson Jun 2013

The "Violence" Of The Canon: Revisiting Contemporary Notions Of Canonical Forms, Colby Dickinson

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The historical conditions surrounding the processes of forming a canon are rarely examined directly, yet it is these processes which govern over the realm of religious representations and identity constructions. In light of recent critical scholarship, it is imperative to address theologically the role that the canon plays within a religious tradition. This essay demonstrates the cultural necessity of canonical forms despite their “monotheistic tendency” to subdivide the world into binary oppositions. By utilizing a scale of violence to determine the impact of the canonical form upon culture this essay offers an account of canons and their role in forming …

The Principle Of Double Effect: Act-Types And Intentions, James G. Murphy Jun 2013

The Principle Of Double Effect: Act-Types And Intentions, James G. Murphy

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Objections to the principle of double effect usually concern its first and second conditions (that the act not be evil in itself, and that the good effect and not the evil effect be intended). The difficulties often arise from a rejection of the idea that acts have a moral nature independent of context, and a tendency to interpret intention as purely psychological. This article argues that the “act itself” should be understood as the act-type, and suggests that examples of evil act-types are not hard to find. It argues that the notion of intention is involved in both conditions, but …

Toward A Theology Of Infertility And The Role Of Donum Vitae, Kathryn Lilla Cox Jun 2013

Toward A Theology Of Infertility And The Role Of Donum Vitae, Kathryn Lilla Cox

School of Theology and Seminary Faculty Publications

A theology of infertility is needed to help couples and the broader ecclesial community understand the theological implications of infertility. Infertility raises questions about human freedom, finitude, embodiment, childlessness, and parenthood. In this article, dominant cultural assumptions surrounding each of these areas when considering reproductive technologies are sketched. Official Roman Catholic teaching on reproductive technologies (Donum Vitae), while rejecting most forms of such technologies, does provide a viable response to the presupposition that reproductive technologies resolve infertility. Given the dominant cultural assumptions and insights from Roman Catholic teaching, this article advocates for several ecclesial changes when considering infertility. …

Women Who Kill: An Analysis Of Cases In Late Eighteenth- And Early Nineteenth-Century London, Kathy Callahan Jun 2013

Women Who Kill: An Analysis Of Cases In Late Eighteenth- And Early Nineteenth-Century London, Kathy Callahan

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century London, the number of women prosecuted for murder was quite small with only forty women reaching the felony court at the Old Bailey for trial between 1783 and 1815. Despite the small number of prosecutions, the cases do reveal important information about gender and criminal justice. Accusations demonstrate difficulties women had with a wide range of interpersonal relationships, their lives in the city, in addition to domestic and substance abuse. Sentencing patterns, too, are illuminating. For those women found guilty, the courts often hesitated to convict to the fullest extent of the law. Juries …

馬家寶的寫實主義 : 左翼思潮與香港本土藝術 = Ma Jiabo's Realism : A Case Study On Hong Kong Art, Suk Man Law, Ni Na Ng

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese

George Meade’S Mixed Legacy, Allen C. Guelzo Jun 2013

George Meade’S Mixed Legacy, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

George Gordon Meade was 47 years old the morning of June 28, 1863, when command of the Army of the Potomac was unceremoniously dumped into his lap by General in Chief Henry Hallcck, and there is no reason to doubt Meade's protest that the move rendered him the most surprised man in the entire Union Army. Meade had never wanted to be a soldier in the first place, much less take direction of an army that at that moment was facing perhaps its most daunting challenge. But compared to his immediate predecessors, Maj. Gens. Ambrose Burnside and Joseph Hooker, what …

Committed Seventh-Day Adventist Students At Secular Institutions Of Higher Education, Lashonda R. Anthony

Dissertations

The experiences of Seventh-day Adventist students at secular universities was examined. Seven women and two men attending universities in Michigan and New York were interviewed. The researcher employed a heuristically guided phenomenological method to get rich descriptions of the participants’ experiences in the secular university setting. Open-ended interviews were used to gather data regarding the student experience.

From an analysis of the data six themes arose detailing the experiences of Seventh-day Adventist students in secular environments. The themes were (a) challenges encountered in the secular environment led to a need for self-advocacy in the academic and work environment regarding maintaining …
