Undergraduate Design Studio Task To Internalize Learner Locus Of Control, Charles Cox, Géza Fischl
Undergraduate Design Studio Task To Internalize Learner Locus Of Control, Charles Cox, Géza Fischl
Learn X Design Conference Series
Designers intentionally influence events and outcomes, making an internal locus of control (LOC) desirable for them to have. Recently, engineering programs have provided more opportunities for design in their undergraduate programs than in the past, but these do not attend to learners’ LOC. Because undergraduate learners with a high external LOC can enter these programs, it makes sense to attempt instructional interventions that could help these learners to internalize their LOC. Here, an intervention for internalizing LOC was piloted using a design task in an undergraduate engineering design studio. This was an innovative application of educational psychology constructs to engineering …

Artist Bio: Attempting, day and night, to live with a dash of color, creativity, and courage. Life is beautiful :)
Art, for me, is an exploration of my true self…with each work I come closer and closer to my own identity. It is a means through which I lose myself in a world of great wonder and amazement, only to emerge a few hours later rejuvenated, empowered, and slightly wiser than I was when I started.
My work attempts to merge the thoughts and ideals of my Indian culture with my life experiences as an American. I have been fortunate …

SURGE
My name is Hannah, and I have a confession to make. I hate working out—none of that sweat, panting, exhaustion, and sore muscles for me, no thank you. I’m embarrassed to go to a gym because I assume that everyone judges my speed, pacing, and weight lifting. I try to encourage myself by shopping for brightly colored running shorts and funky sports bras, but, honestly, it’s a fruitless endeavor. Because at the end of the day, I just don’t like to exercise.
So why do I do it?
Because I want to be skinny. [excerpt]

Work In Progress: My Life At Twenty-One, Derrick J. Behm
Work In Progress: My Life At Twenty-One, Derrick J. Behm
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Moving beyond the author’s identity once forged in the family and social expectations of his childhood, a twenty-‐one year old author weaves a memoir with creative twists that revolves around the theme of coming of age, particularly acceptance of self. Using the second person point of view, the memoir beguiles readers to make the story theirs as well. The preface narrates reasons for composing a memoir, elaborating on how simple, everyday stories become important in creating cohesiveness among different stages of change and growth. The afterword analyzes literary influences that contributed to the author’s style of creative non-fiction and discusses …
Pharmacologies Of Texts And Images, Noel Fitzpatrick
Pharmacologies Of Texts And Images, Noel Fitzpatrick
Conference Papers
The problematic of Ekphrasis will be the central tenant of this paper, a relationship between text, language and image. Ekphrasis broadly understood as the relationship between images and words, however, in the case of this paper it will be taken to mean the relationship between words and images in relation to memory. Bernard Stiegler’s work has become well renowned in relation to his exploration of texts and in particular the relationship between texts and technology; an intimate relationship, if writing is to be considered as a form of technology, a mnemonic form. However, there is also another aspect in the …

Memory And Meaning: Civil Rights In Lee's Backyard, John M. Rudy
Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
I walked up the long winding path named for Mary Custis and her family home. As I ascended the steps I stopped to quickly pay my respects to Robert Todd Lincoln. But he wasn't my quarry for the day. As I came to the top of the steps, Robert E. Lee's home hove into view. I've been inside Lee's house a few times. Each time has been interesting, but relatively hollow. Those four walls lack the raw power that the surrounding acres seem to ooze. [excerpt]

A Search For Symbolism In The Great Gatsby, Nicole Trackman
The Great Gatsby Unit
Students will work in small groups to trace the context and implications for assigned symbols or colors in The Great Gatsby. This activity is best done after the class has completed a reading of the book. This activity allows the students to look more closely at Fitzgerald’s language and make connections across the use of symbols/ colors in the text. This lesson can be a nice lead up to a final paper or assessment. Teachers can facilitate this lesson as a part of a blended classroom, or completely in class. Either way, students will have a catalog of the …

Lets talk about sex.
Well not really, just the double standard that comes with the topic. It’s no secret that men and women are taught to think about sex differently. While there are many (myself included) who fail to accept these culturally imposed ideas and attitudes about sex, it would be incredibly naïve to not acknowledge the existence of the double standard that exists. Exploring 'Reflective' Design: An Approach To Digital Archives, Reuben Stanton, Laurene Vaughan, Jeremy Yuille
Exploring 'Reflective' Design: An Approach To Digital Archives, Reuben Stanton, Laurene Vaughan, Jeremy Yuille
Nordes Conference Series
In this short paper we discuss our explorations with adopting reflective design as an approach to designing a digital archive for the performing arts. The stakeholders in this project are diverse, comprised of members of the partner organisation, the public, the design team and government funding agencies. Each stakeholder has different expectations and skills to bring to the project. It is proposed that reflective design with its mix of critical reflection with a human centred design and prototyping approach provides a methodological framework that enables the complexities of the project to be integrated into an action orientated design exploration.
