Ricardo Diaz - Latino/A Mass Incarceration In Relation To The “War On Drugs”, Ricardo Diaz Jul 2013

Ricardo Diaz - Latino/A Mass Incarceration In Relation To The “War On Drugs”, Ricardo Diaz

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

Michelle Alexander, in The New Jim Crow, argues that the American legal system is a racial caste system maintained by unequal drug laws, what she terms, “The New Jim Crow” laws. This essay explores the limits of her thesis in relation to Latino/a population in the United States. Specific attention is paid to the Latino/a population in Wisconsin where racial disparities in the penal system are the greatest in America. Analysis of government data suggests that Alexander’s research reproduces the tendency of the American legal system to define race in binary terms: black and white. In effect this leaves …

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

This qualitative study will examine the way in which the masculinity of African American men is portrayed in films through a textual analysis of the leading male character in movies that have been awarded the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture. I’ll be performing a textual analysis of the following movies: “Flight”, “Book of Eli”, and “The Great Debaters”. Through the analysis of the main character, I discuss the following: types of marginalization experienced in the film, interactions/relations with (African American) women, as well as the importance that his education and/or occupation will play in his …

Andrew I. Thompson - From Tragedy To Policy: Representations Of Muslims And Islam In U.S. Mainstream Media, Andrew I. Thompson

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

Following the terrorist attacks of September 11th came a flood of criticism of Islam and Muslims in the U.S. media. Many saw Islam as the root cause of the attacks, but failed to assess the political or social issues in the Middle East, or even the United States’ role in the region. An example of this is the New York Times’ section that ran immediately after the attacks entitled ‘A Nation Challenged,’ which included titles such as: “Yes, this is about Islam,” “This is a religious war,” “Barbarians at the gate,” and “The one true faith.” This project …

A Black And White Game: Racial Stereotypes In Baseball, Patrick Ferrucci, Edson C. Tandoc Jr., Chad Painter, Glenn Leshner

Communication Faculty Publications

The current study experimentally tested stereotypes and credibility of messages associated with athletes. Participants were asked to rate photos of black and white baseball players based on stereotypes identified in previous literature. They were then given an anonymous paragraph from a newspaper that featured either a stereotype consistent or inconsistent message and asked to rate the author's credibility. Black players were rated significantly higher in physical strength and natural ability, which is consistent with previous literature. However, inconsistent with previous literature, white players were not rated significantly higher in intelligence and leadership. Despite these results, when measuring credibility, this study …

Artists & Creativity In Urban Placemaking: Re!Ections On A Downtown Minneapolis Cultural District, Tom Borrup Jul 2013

Artists & Creativity In Urban Placemaking: Re!Ections On A Downtown Minneapolis Cultural District, Tom Borrup

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Participatory city planning led by artists was not in the sightlines of Geddes or Mumford when modern planning practices were born. A century-long trend brings increased requirements and expectations of participation by public stakeholders and growth in neighborhood and district-level planning. Increasingly complex urban environments require cross-sector collaboration and cross-cultural dialogue, in addition to understanding a multitude of culturally specific ways people use public and private spaces. Challenges to the profession grow as the role of planner evolves from engineer to facilitator. This paper reviews these trends as well as recent scholarly work calling for more involvement of creative voices …

The Revitalization Of Community Through Dance Communication: A Case Of Community Dance In Sapporo, Japan, Takako Iwasawa

Journal of Urban Culture Research

We are currently faced with the fragile relationship and network between people. It is necessary to encourage people to revitalize their community. Projects that resolve social issues through the arts have been acknowledged and practiced worldwide. Community Dance is one such art project. It began in the 70's in England as a new extension to the social function of dance in regenerating the community, in which community members shared concerns together and negotiated these issues via communication through dance. This study focuses on Community Dance in Sapporo, Japan where diverse activities and projects have been active since 2010. It includes …

Innovative Management For Asian Futures A Comparative Study Of Cultural Industries In Thailand And Korea (Part 2 - Thailand), Suppakorn Disatapundhu

Journal of Urban Culture Research

In the recent years, following the boom of the cultural policies at the international level, Thailand has turned to place its emphasize on the idea of "cultural and creative industries" at the academic and policy-making level especially in its art and design institutions. Academic disciplines in arts management, information and technology, communication arts, media studies, and economics are developing into the world where they can be blended together into multiple levels of knowledge management. The policy development, and implementation plans are embracing these industries into its national platforms, integrating the culture and economics together. Therefore, this two-part article aims to …

Remembering And Misremembering Hypatia: The Lessons Of Agora, Donald W. Viney Jul 2013

Remembering And Misremembering Hypatia: The Lessons Of Agora, Donald W. Viney

Faculty Submissions

The film Agora tells a somewhat fictionalized version of the story of Hypatia of Alexandria (d. 415). I raise and attempt to answer the question whether it is good historical fiction. After summarizing what is known from the historical record about Hypatia, my answer to the question is a qualified affirmative. I note the various historical details that the film preserves. The liberties that the film takes with her story are, by turns, problematic (e.g. reinforcing the view of a fundamental conflict between reason and faith), enlightening (e.g. in the introduction of the fictional character of Davus), unfair (e.g. in …
