From Bauhaus To Desis: Exploring Solution-Focused Methodology For Social Design Education, Yanki C. Lee, Denny K L Ho
Learn X Design Conference Series
What are the social responsibilities of design schools? In order to explore this question, we employed action research methodology. Through our on-going collaborations with different design schools, our main research goal is to investigate the social role of designers and further of design schools and the design education system as a whole. ‘Ageing in place’, the overarching concept for these labs, was to enable participants to experience and question how the life-course approach to ageing could inspire new community design processes. So far, we have engaged different types of design schools and in this paper, we reflect on one of …

Designing Teaching—Teaching Designing: Teacher’S Guidance In A Virtual Design Studio, Henna Lahti, Pirita Seitamaa-Hakkarainen
Learn X Design Conference Series
This study examined pedagogical aspects of virtual designing. It focused on how an industrial design teacher organized a plastic product design course and how the teacher guided student teams’ design processes in a virtual design studio. The model of Learning by Collaborative Designing was used as a pedagogical and analytical framework. The study employed qualitative content analysis of the teacher’s notes posted to the Moodle database. The results indicated that teaching exhibited three characteristic emphases: problem driven, solution driven and procedural driven. The main part of the teacher’s notes was solution driven statements, including new information, design ideas and evaluating …

On Sport and Society
While waiting for the other shoe, or perhaps shoes, to drop in the anti-aging campaign by Major League Baseball, and noticing that Bud Selig is not getting any younger, it has suddenly hit me that college football is about to descend upon us with all the hypocrisy that it can muster. As a result crime reports in the sporting press will escalate, and there will be a new harvest of “Boys Gone Wild” videos as student-athletes begin their late summer season. One can only hope that “old school” football coaches do not retain “old school” training techniques that endanger the …
An Effect Of Multidisciplinary Design Education: Creative Problem Solving In Collaborative Design Process, Da Eun Kwon, Sun Hee Jang
An Effect Of Multidisciplinary Design Education: Creative Problem Solving In Collaborative Design Process, Da Eun Kwon, Sun Hee Jang
Learn X Design Conference Series
This study verified whether the students who received multidisciplinary education can be considered to have attained more creative problem-solving abilities than the students who majored only in design, based on their completion of a project after teaming with students from various other departments. When it is heterogeneous and in the in-depth discussion stage, the EMT (heterogeneous teams, including multidisciplinary design major) produced more creative output than the EDT (heterogeneous team, including design-only major) as a result of an experiment. Therefore we compared the creative process of the EDT and the EMT in the in-depth discussion stage of the heterogeneous groups …

Founded in 1869, Phi Delta Phi is the oldest legal honorary association in North America. The Territorial Government of Michigan passed an act on August 26, 1817 to establish the “Catholepistemiad,” or University of Michigania, to be located in Detroit. Dissatisfied with the administration of the university, the Territorial Legislature repealed the act and established the University of Michigan as a successor corporation with full rights. The campus was moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor and the establishment of a law school was planned in 1837, the same year Michigan officially …

Kappa Beta Pi, the first legal sorority in the U.S., was founded on December 15, 1908 at the Chicago-Kent College of Law to promote high professional standards among women law students and lawyers. In 1916, the publication of Kappa Beta Pi Quarterly began, and members used these publications to share both serious and lighthearted news, announce professional appointments, office openings, address changes, and accomplishments. In 1924, it also reprinted the article “Indian Country,” the first article written by a woman to be printed in the Journal of the American Bar Association …

Delta Theta Phi was founded at the Cleveland Law School of Baldwin-Wallace College (now Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University) in Ohio in 1900 and became a national fraternity in 1904. In September of 1913, the fraternity amalgamated three other fraternities, Alpha Kappa Phi (begun in Chicago, 1902), Theta Lambda Phi (Pennsylvania, 1903) and Sigma Nu Phi (National University Law School, 1903). In 1969, the fraternity became international with the first two senates chartered outside of the United States. In 1989 Delta Theta Phi merged with Sigma Nu Phi, …
Accent In Uspanteko, Ryan Bennett, Robert Henderson
Accent In Uspanteko, Ryan Bennett, Robert Henderson
English Faculty Research Publications
Uspanteko (Guatemala; ∼2000 speakers) is an endangered K’ichean-branch Mayan language. It is unique among the K’ichean languages in having innovated a system of contrastive pitch accent, which operates alongside a separate system of non-contrastive stress. The prosody of Uspanteko is of general typological interest, given the relative scarcity of ‘mixed’ languages employing both stress and lexical pitch. Drawing from a descriptive grammar and from our own fieldwork, we also document some intricate interactions between pitch accent and other aspects of the phonology (stress placement, vowel length, vowel quality, and two deletion processes). While pitch accent is closely tied to morphology, …

Given the general decline in birth rates in developed nations, retirement planning is being increasingly discussed by both academics and government officials. Ralston asserts that policy makers need to start thinking about striking a balance between the citizen’s personal responsibility for retirement savings, and what the government should do.

Movie-Making In Singapore, Singapore Management University

When the movie Ah Boys to Men broke the record for the highest-grossing Singapore film in December last year, its producers knew they would, at the very least, avoid making a loss. The S$6.03 million collected at the box office up to that point was twice the S$3 million that was spent to make the movie, so one would think its director, Jack Neo, would be laughing all the way to the bank. One would also be wrong ...

A New Field Of Dreams: A Study Of The Writing Major, T J Geiger
Writing Program – Dissertations
Within Writing Studies, the tension between pedagogy and theory, between teaching and disciplinary status receives much commentary. This dissertation explores that tension within the context of the undergraduate Writing major. I begin by reviewing scholarship about advanced composition, advanced Writing, and the Writing major. I read this literature in light of concerns about student subjectivity, authorship, and disciplinary participation. Through that reading, I explore the conflicted status of the student subject imagined within this literature. The subject I discern contains elements of what Susan Miller describes as the normative subject of composition as well as elements of a revised and …

This study examined whether different forms of address used by food servers were related to customers' tipping behavior. Food servers addressed diners who paid with credit cards by their first names, titles plus last names, sir/ma'am, or no address. Results indicated that when food servers personalized their service by addressing their customers by name, they earned significantly higher tips than when they used less immediate forms of address, although customers' estimated age mediated these results.

Family Affairs Newsletter 2013-08-01, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

A Subcontinent's Sunni Schism: The Deobandi-Barelvi Rivalry And The Creation Of Modern South Asia, William Kesler Jackson
History - Dissertations
This work presents the first-ever history of the 150-year religio-political rivalry between the Deobandis and the Barelvis--arguably the most important schism in the "Muslim world," and certainly the most significant within Sunni Islam. More recently, that rivalry has often been expressed by means of bullets and bombs, especially in Pakistan. But beyond the headline-grabbing violence of the Deobandi-Barelvi schism lies the story of a century-and-a-half-long religious antagonism: at first over converts, later for competing visions of the political future, then for a place within a new "Islamic" polity--for dominance within its political structure. For Deobandis, the rivalry was defined by …

Vigilante Violence Vs. Freedom Of Choice In Marriage: The Foray/Zajazd In The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Of The 18th Century, Lynn Lubamersky

The most famous poem in the Polish language, ‘Pan Tadeusz’ by Adam Mickiewicz, tells of the foray – an institution where the nobles might carry out acts of vigilante violence. Generally speaking, noble families would make use of the court system in search of justice, but if they could not gain justice within the courts system, they might seek vengeance through violent collective action. In some cases, the reason why estates were being raided and their inhabitants attacked was that noble families claimed to be defending the family honor. They might say that a lady’s honor had been insulted if …
The Nature Of Authentic Governance: A Treatise On Democratic Rhetoric And Rhetorical Democracy, Daniel L. Foster
The Nature Of Authentic Governance: A Treatise On Democratic Rhetoric And Rhetorical Democracy, Daniel L. Foster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Democracy is a form of governance that allows for the flourishing of human potentiality. Unfortunately, democracy has become less of a means of governance and more of a rhetorical device to secure the consent of the people to be ruled by the elite few. Thus the current study seeks to disrupt this hegemonic means of control through an explication of authentic governance and democracy in order to demonstrate that the current manifestations of governance associated with democracy are inauthentic. To begin, authentic democracy -direct or as it is constituted here, rhetorical democracy- can foster a citizenry of active and empowered …

Review: 'The Philosophical Aesthetics Of Dance: Identity, Performance, And Understanding', Aili W. Bresnahan
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Graham McFee is one of the few philosophers who can be credited with helping to pioneer and forge a path for dance as a fine art in the field of analytic aesthetics. His 1992 book, Understanding Dance, following Francis Sparshott’s 1988 book Off the Ground: First Steps to a Philosophical Consideration of the Dance, was a significant introductory step toward situating dance in a field that has traditionally focused primarily and nearly exclusively on painting, sculpture, literature, and (more recently) music.
In general dance has not been taken seriously as a legitimate art form by the philosophic academy; indeed, it …
