Stuff White People Like #1863, Joseph Stephen Slowinski

SURGE

There I sat: sun burning my neck, sweat pouring down my face, watching grown men play at death. I’d been meaning for years to get to Gettysburg to see the reenactment, and this past July, I was lucky enough to be there for the 150th anniversary of the battle. And so there I was, sitting in a grandstand in the middle of a farm in rural Pennsylvania, surrounded by fellow white people, watching a Confederate soldier get shot in the back for pretending to desert in the face of the Union cavalry. He flopped to the ground in front of …

Teaching Tolerance: Anti-Racist Pedagogical Intent In Frieda Plinzner’S Mission Literature For Children, Claire Sorensen, Dr. Cindy Brewer Aug 2013

Teaching Tolerance: Anti-Racist Pedagogical Intent In Frieda Plinzner’S Mission Literature For Children, Claire Sorensen, Dr. Cindy Brewer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

From feminism to Marxism, moral to multi-racial criticism, writings from the colonial era have been intensely analyzed by scholars. Thanks to their studies, we have been provided with important but general contextual knowledge of colonial literature. However, one vital subset of this field, colonial missionary literature particularly by women, has been, with few exceptions, almost entirely ignored.

Austrian Journalist Ann Tizia Leitich’S ‘Other’ Perspective Of American Influence On Austria, Daniel Shoop, Dr. Robert Mcfarland Aug 2013

Austrian Journalist Ann Tizia Leitich’S ‘Other’ Perspective Of American Influence On Austria, Daniel Shoop, Dr. Robert Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Researching Ann Tizia Leitich’s works was one of the highlights of my undergraduate studies. It had taken Dr. McFarland and me a few discussions to settle on this particular research topic. I was excited to work with him researching the topic of the American ‘other’ portrayed by Leitich and contemporaries such as Stefan Zweig, George Simmel and Theodor Lüddecke. Although I was excited to work on this project with a mentor whom I revered, my emotions were mixed. I must admit that my first thoughs of the research topic were not very interested. I thought it would be boring, but …

An Introduction To Charlotta Elisbeth Konstantina Von Der Recke’S Expose On The Infamous Cagliostro, David Mann, Dr. Michelle James Aug 2013

An Introduction To Charlotta Elisbeth Konstantina Von Der Recke’S Expose On The Infamous Cagliostro, David Mann, Dr. Michelle James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I was awarded my mentored research project in order to contribute to an ongoing project known as the Sophie Project, directed by Dr. Michelle James. The Sophie Project is an ongoing mentored research project that collects and makes available the creative works of early German-language women. For the past three years, the Sophie researchers have been preparing a critical edition of the collected works of Elisa von der Recke. The first volume of this series is now nearing completion. Reckes works are being published as part of the Sophie Project because of the tremendous intellectual and social impact she had …

Prosodic Templates And Plural Formation In German Low And Middle Dialects, Jessica Anderson, Dr. Laura Catharine Smith Aug 2013

Prosodic Templates And Plural Formation In German Low And Middle Dialects, Jessica Anderson, Dr. Laura Catharine Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My research is to examine the actual structure that dictates the shape of plural formation in German, and why in some dialects we see a failure to consistently form the plural using the method present in the standard language. Using previous research along with new data gathered from the Pfeffer Corpus, our goal was to examine the varying plural forms attested and gather a clearer picture of dialectal differences.

Anglicization: The Rate Of English Borrowings In Pennsylvania German, Micheal Taylor, Dr. Laura Catharine Smith Aug 2013

Anglicization: The Rate Of English Borrowings In Pennsylvania German, Micheal Taylor, Dr. Laura Catharine Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My research began as I came across contradicting theories concerning the Anglicization of Pennsylvania German while writing a paper for an advanced modern German course. While researching for that preliminary paper, I found scholars suggesting that English has completely taken over the PA German language. Such scholars stated that the rate of English borrowings was increasing at a record rate and that the language was not an actual language at all, but rather a messy conglomeration of English and Standard German. On the other hand, a handful of scholars argued that such research against PA German individuality had been highly …

Constructing A Successful Marriage Amidst Difficulties In Postwar Germany, Zach Duvall, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling Aug 2013

Constructing A Successful Marriage Amidst Difficulties In Postwar Germany, Zach Duvall, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My original intention for my first research project was to fill a gap in the scholarship related to marriage problems in German resulting from and during the aftermath of World War II. Specifically, we wanted to add to the literature a source that discussed how these problems were overcome. We planned to answer questions such as: Which marriages were successful and why were they successful? What factors contributed to the ability to overcome problems caused by war-time changes? Through understanding how these problems were solved over sixty years ago we hoped to help contemporary persons cope with and resolve difficulties …

The Ideological Diet Of A Colonial Child: The Interdisciplinary Analysis Of A Series Of Children’S Picture Books, Camille Anderson, Dr. Cindy Brewer Aug 2013

The Ideological Diet Of A Colonial Child: The Interdisciplinary Analysis Of A Series Of Children’S Picture Books, Camille Anderson, Dr. Cindy Brewer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project proposed an analysis of a series of children’s books published in 1904 by a mission in Berlin. The project’s depth and uniqueness were based on the reading of both the text and the accompanying pictures. I was able to participate in the collection of the documents, translate each book in the series of six, and write and present a research paper outlining a post-colonial art historical approach to the volume specifically about India.

The Portraits Of Elisa Von Der Recke: Finding The Woman Behind The Writings, Robert B. Sowby, Dr. Michelle Stott James Aug 2013

The Portraits Of Elisa Von Der Recke: Finding The Woman Behind The Writings, Robert B. Sowby, Dr. Michelle Stott James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Sophie Project, led by Dr. Michelle James, is an ongoing mentored research project which focuses on collecting and studying the written works of German-speaking women. The Sophie Project is currently publishing a five-volume Critical Edition Series, the first volume of which will be the Critically Annotated Works of Elisa von der Recke. My contribution to the project involved researching and locating more than a dozen portraits of Recke and writing an analytical essay to accompany them in the publication.

Feminist And Marriage-Related Issues In Seventheenth Century French Fairy Tales, Susanna Allred Aug 2013

Feminist And Marriage-Related Issues In Seventheenth Century French Fairy Tales, Susanna Allred

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project studied the discussion of feminist and marriage-related issues in seventheenth century French fairy tales. Though Charles Perrault is now the most famous writer of fairy tales, he was part of a larger literary trend of fairy tale-writing. This literary vogue was dominated and actually started by female writers. Though Perrault’s tales are comparatively conservative in their discussion of social issues, his female contemporaries frequently used the fairy tale format to discuss their discontents with their society’s conception of the family as a political unit and women as pawns in struggles for dynastic succession and family wealth.

A Sixteenth Century Niobe In A Twentieth Century Short Story: Ovid’S Long Reach From Augustan Rome, Leslie Macfarlane, Dr. Stephen Bay Aug 2013

A Sixteenth Century Niobe In A Twentieth Century Short Story: Ovid’S Long Reach From Augustan Rome, Leslie Macfarlane, Dr. Stephen Bay

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The term “reception” defines the product of referring to or relying upon one work of literature or art within another. Anything from translating a work into a different language, reusing a well known title, quoting directly from a work, or writing in a meter typically associated with a certain work or author can be deemed a reception. In the late 1930’s or early 40’s Theodore Sturgeon, who would later gain recognition for his contributions to the science fiction genre, wrote a short story and gave the antagonist and the story the name “Niobe.” That decision advertises that the story is …

Creating Hebrewcorpus: A Vast Online Resource For Modern Hebrew, Justin Parry, Dr. Dilworth Parkinson Aug 2013

Creating Hebrewcorpus: A Vast Online Resource For Modern Hebrew, Justin Parry, Dr. Dilworth Parkinson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Hebrew in its present form, called Israeli by some scholars because of its unique modern characteristics, has only existed for about 120 years (Zuckermann 1). Because of this, scholarship in Israeli Hebrew is in many ways still in its infancy. Within this language there is one area of research that needs clear development and better resources. This area is called corpus linguistics, because it deals with corpora. A corpus can be defined as a “systematic collection of speech or writing in a language” (Matthews 78). This area is particularly significant because it allows researchers and language learners to search for …

Danish 202 Curriculum Project, Kevin Jenson, Dr. Christpher Oscarson Aug 2013

Danish 202 Curriculum Project, Kevin Jenson, Dr. Christpher Oscarson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

One of the most difficult aspects of teaching a foreign language course is finding materials that are in line with the methodology and learning objectives specific to the class being taught. In the case of languages that are more commonly taught, such as French or Spanish, there is a lot of sorting that needs to be done in order to find the right text. For languages that are less commonly taught, however, such as Danish, there are only a handful of resources available, and unfortunately, many of them are not designed for an American university education. Since the vast majority …

Wordsworth’S Moving Picture: Guide To The Lakes And The Romantic Image, Shannon M. Stimpson, Dr. Nicholas Mason Aug 2013

Wordsworth’S Moving Picture: Guide To The Lakes And The Romantic Image, Shannon M. Stimpson, Dr. Nicholas Mason

Journal of Undergraduate Research

At the beginning of this project, I planned to research female-authored texts from the Romantic era and to explore patterns of consumerism found within them. After a few weeks of researching various pamphlets and printed visual images for this project, I started to wonder whether the relationship between printed visuals, texts, and consumer culture had a larger cultural impact than I had previously anticipated. I became interested in the ways that print culture influenced not only female authors, but also some of the foundational figures of the Romantic era, particularly William Wordsworth, who was referenced in much of the research …

The Effectiveness Of Reading Strategies In A Secondary English Classroom, Whitney Sorensen, Deborah Dean Aug 2013

The Effectiveness Of Reading Strategies In A Secondary English Classroom, Whitney Sorensen, Deborah Dean

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study sought to discover and analyze what students do as they read, and whether or not classroom instruction could help them read better. The initial survey, called a “Reading Road Map”, was given to the students to record what they thought and did as they read an article provided by the researcher. This initial survey was then contrasted with a secondary survey, another “Reading Road Map”, in order to discover if the thoughts and actions done by students while they read changed at all as a result of instruction. The instruction in the classroom was given after the initial …

Teaching Writing For Life: A Look At Persuasive Writing Throughout Genre, Cathryn Peers, Deborah Dean Aug 2013

Teaching Writing For Life: A Look At Persuasive Writing Throughout Genre, Cathryn Peers, Deborah Dean

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Writing is a social response; however, many sixteen year olds find that hard to understand. To high school students, writing is the means to an end – get the teacher/parent off your back, get a good grade, finish the project, etc. When I first mentioned the words “Persuasive Essay” to my class of 32 high school juniors, the moans, groans, and rolled eyes actually interested me. Why did these students feel so adverse to this essay type in particular? So, we talked about it. Students saw the essay as busy work; when would they ever use this in the real …

Easier For A Camel: The Quasi-Christian Merchants Of Venice; A Literary Look At Economic History, Wayne Sandholtz, Dr. Brandie Siegfried Aug 2013

Easier For A Camel: The Quasi-Christian Merchants Of Venice; A Literary Look At Economic History, Wayne Sandholtz, Dr. Brandie Siegfried

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In a Shakespeare class during my junior year, I wrote a paper called “Easier for a camel: the quasi-Christian merchants of Venice” which examined the relationships between business virtue and Christian virtue in Shakespeare’s comedy The Merchant of Venice. Even though it was written centuries ago, I felt that the play had significant things to say to our modern capitalist society in which, just as in Shakespeare’s day, traditional sources of authority are being challenged by the combination of new technology with expanding economic opportunities. I decided to apply for and was given a grant from ORCA to further explore …

Analysis Of Ancient Egyptian Textiles: The Burial Ribbons Of Fag Al-Gamous, Sophie Lee, Kristin South Aug 2013

Analysis Of Ancient Egyptian Textiles: The Burial Ribbons Of Fag Al-Gamous, Sophie Lee, Kristin South

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Burials play a particularly important role in understanding ancient cultures because, presumably, they provide insight into the most important objects of a belief system. People bury their dead with objects essential to the afterlife, which means the artifacts from burials may provide crucial information as archaeologists try to reconstruct their world.

Katy A To Z, Katharine Anderson, Dr. John Bennion Aug 2013

Katy A To Z, Katharine Anderson, Dr. John Bennion

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When I set out several months ago to write an honors thesis, I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted to do. I was going to craft a progression of essays examining myself, beginning with the most basic personal information, and slowly progressing, layer by layer, to the topics and issues which I hold deepest and closest to whatever may be considered my core. I was going to tell stories, express opinions, and in other diverse ways utilize the genre of personal essay as a means of self discovery. I hoped that the final product would in some …

Woman’S Exponent: Chronicling The Relief Society’S Involvement In The Quest For Political Equality, 1900-1914, Paige Tuft, Dr. Rebecca De Schweinitz Aug 2013

Woman’S Exponent: Chronicling The Relief Society’S Involvement In The Quest For Political Equality, 1900-1914, Paige Tuft, Dr. Rebecca De Schweinitz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As most of my research tends to do, this project took quite a different turn then originally intended. I intended this research to continue on with the topic of my senior thesis concerning the political activism of women in Utah during the 1920s by adding a different layer to the picture. In my research prior to this, I looked at Utah women in general without really looking at how religious convictions played into the equation. I intended this project to fill in this gap and to produce something I could add to my previous work. As it turns out, this …

Annotating The Life Of Elisa Von Der Recke, Courtney Wright, Dr. Michelle James Aug 2013

Annotating The Life Of Elisa Von Der Recke, Courtney Wright, Dr. Michelle James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For the last year I have been working on glossing Volume II of Elisa von der Recke. Doctor Michelle James has been working closely with me throughout the year, directing me in what I should do, and when and how it should be done. Coupled with her knowledge of Elisa von der Recke, and the German language, I have been able to complete the glossing that was the desired goal for my ORCA Grant project.

German-Tongans: A Look At Racial Integration In Twentieth Century Germany, Kasia Cook, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling Aug 2013

German-Tongans: A Look At Racial Integration In Twentieth Century Germany, Kasia Cook, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In Tonga, an archipelago deep in the South Pacific Ocean, German immigrants during the middle and late nineteenth century played an important role in the development of the islands. The presence of businessmen involved in the Copra trade was especially significant, and according to historical evidence, members of the Wolfgramm and Sanft families, both from Pyritz, Pomerania, Prussia were among the most influential. During Germany’s colonial period, race was a primary factor in determining how a person was treated, yet despite European racial prejudice, all three men married Tongan women and eventually became fully immersed in Tongan culture. Regardless of …

The Feminine Faust: An Analysis Of Ada Christen’S Faustina, Katherine Lyman, Dr. Christian Clement Aug 2013

The Feminine Faust: An Analysis Of Ada Christen’S Faustina, Katherine Lyman, Dr. Christian Clement

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Ada Christen (1839-1901), Viennese feminist, naturalist, and popular poet, published Faustina: Drama in fünf Akten, in 1871. The drama, which was set as a melodramatic version of Goethe’s Faust, did not succeed, and today, Faustina still exists only in library archives (Kord 344). The purpose of my work with Faustina was twofold: to transcribe the text of the play for SOPHIE, BYU’s database of German women’s literature, and then to write a paper analyzing the text.

Voodoo Villains, Zombies, And Black Magic: The Role Of Hecate In Orson Welles’ “Voodoo” Macbeth, Rachel Wise, Dr. Nancy Christiansen Aug 2013

Voodoo Villains, Zombies, And Black Magic: The Role Of Hecate In Orson Welles’ “Voodoo” Macbeth, Rachel Wise, Dr. Nancy Christiansen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

On 14 April 1936 at the Lafayette Theatre in Harlem, Orson Welles’ adapted Shakespearean play “Voodoo” Macbeth opened. The play was set in nineteenth-century Haiti and cast with only African Americans. This production was the first professional Shakespearean play with an allblack cast performed in the history of the United States, and it was a stupendous success. “Voodoo” Macbeth was produced by the Negro Unit of the Federal Theatre Project, an organization started during the Great Depression as a way to provide jobs for unemployed actors and stage workers. The goal of my project was to examine the gendered relationship …

Latter-Day Saint Involvement In The Civil War, Nathaniel Freeman, Dr. Kenneth Alford Aug 2013

Latter-Day Saint Involvement In The Civil War, Nathaniel Freeman, Dr. Kenneth Alford

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I decided to research Latter-day Saint participation in the Civil War when Professor Alford, a retired U.S. Army Colonel and BYU associate professor, contacted me regarding his interest in publishing a book on the topic. I had previously worked for him as a teaching assistant and had been interested in war history since I was in elementary school so I agreed and submitted my ORCA proposal. The purpose of my ORCA project was to document the service of Latter-day Saint Civil War veterans and how the Church as a whole was affected by that critical conflict. It was done in …

Ovid’S Poetic Voice In The Metamorphoses, Christopher Meldrum, Dr. Cecilia Peek Aug 2013

Ovid’S Poetic Voice In The Metamorphoses, Christopher Meldrum, Dr. Cecilia Peek

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Written around 8 A.D., the Metamorphoses by Publius Ovidius Naso (Ovid) is considered a classic of both Roman and World culture. It holds a unique place in Classical literature, which has caused it to remain an object of focused interest in the academic community. Although Ovid declares it to be an epic, it nevertheless displays several striking differences in style and composition from traditional epics such as Virgil’s Aeneid and Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad. The text of the Metamorphoses is also intriguing to scholars because many of the myths it contains do not follow the traditional accounts given in other …

George Eliot And Cultural Attitudes Toward Marginal Religious Groups In Mid-Century Victorian England, Calvin Olsen, Dr. Susan Howe Aug 2013

George Eliot And Cultural Attitudes Toward Marginal Religious Groups In Mid-Century Victorian England, Calvin Olsen, Dr. Susan Howe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Mary Anne Evans, who wrote under the pen name George Eliot, was a novelist in Victorian England. Like other women writers of the time, she used a pseudonym so that her work would be taken seriously. She is most widely recognized for her novels, but she also wrote non-fiction geared toward academic audiences of the time. In 1852 she took over as editor for the Westminster Review, a journal interested in becoming “an instrument for the development and guidance of earnest thought on Politics, Social Philosophy, Religion, and General Literature.” The Westminster Review had recently assimilated the smaller Foreign Quarterly …

Learn X Design Conference Series

This project aims at the collective definition of social design. The process of exploring this definition is considered a workshop that gets people involved and passionate. In this process there are various elements that represented tangible reference points and draw to defined public spaces in the city and central at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Social Design is a well-established term and has various forms of interpretations. Though this project aims to understand more about these interpretations. To achieve this, individuals were animated to think about the term ‘design’ and involved in defining new paradigms. This was done with …
