Anthropomorphism At Qumran: An Examination Of Qumran’S Pentateuch, Cory Daniel Crawford, Dr. Stephen D. Ricks Aug 2013

Anthropomorphism At Qumran: An Examination Of Qumran’S Pentateuch, Cory Daniel Crawford, Dr. Stephen D. Ricks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Although the first writings on the banks of the Dead Sea, known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, were first discovered in 1947, not all were made accessible to more than a handful of scholars; indeed, not even the subject matter of the writings were made known until 1992. This guarding of the material retarded (and preserved) the study of the contents of the Dead Sea Scrolls, so that today traces of the ancient world are still percolating through the hands of scholars to the general public.

Orca Scholarship Research Results, Sariah Choucair, Dr. Dilworth Parkinson Aug 2013

Orca Scholarship Research Results, Sariah Choucair, Dr. Dilworth Parkinson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During my time in Beirut I came to know myself. At first this may seem a very bold, unscholarly statement, perhaps better suited to a magazine essay than a scholastic summary. However, I feel that the best research is that which becomes a part of us, that broadens our view not of our subject only, but of the world as a whole and our role in it. When I applied for and received this scholarship I was expecting to have a purely scholastic experience studying the women’s literature produced during the Lebanese civil war, completely separate from my familial experience …

Holy Ground: An Interpretive Study Of The Salt Lake Temple Landscape, Jeremy P. Call, Dr. George B. Handley Aug 2013

Holy Ground: An Interpretive Study Of The Salt Lake Temple Landscape, Jeremy P. Call, Dr. George B. Handley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Lying in the geographic heart of the Mormon faith, the Salt Lake Temple has become a popular icon for the Mormon Church throughout the world and has been the subject of numerous architectural and theological analyses. Architectural analyses often trace historical and stylistic precedents or explain the symbolism of the exterior in relation to Mormon doctrine. Yet the gardens of Temple Square, encompassing twenty-six acres of a site selected by God through the prophet Brigham Young, consecrated as holy ground by President Wilford Woodruff, and cherished by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have been neglected …

Noun-Adjective Compounds In Old English Poetry, Ryan Christensen, Dr. Don Chapman Aug 2013

Noun-Adjective Compounds In Old English Poetry, Ryan Christensen, Dr. Don Chapman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

One of the marks of Old English poetic style is the compound word. Malcolm Godden calls compounds “the essence of Anglo-Saxon poetic language.”(1) The lexicon of words exclusive to poetry includes many compounds, and many of these compounds are used only once in the Old English corpus. Thus it seems Anglo-Saxon poem-making consisted not only in using a large number of compound words, but in true compounding, in coining new words by combining two old words.

Linguistic Research In The Fijian Language, Jared Chapman, Dr. Dallin Oak Aug 2013

Linguistic Research In The Fijian Language, Jared Chapman, Dr. Dallin Oak

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For nearly fifty years, Fiji has been the only major South Pacific LDS mission without its own Missionary Training Center (MTC) language program. For this reason, missionaries have gone without language skills and their ability to do missionary work was limited. Today, the MTC has a fledgling program that struggles to teach its missionaries the language. The program=s major challenge was the lack of adequate language lesson materials. As a return missionary from Fiji and founder of its MTC language training program, I have a strong love for the people and an intense interest in improving the instructional methods used …

The aim of this project was to assemble a CD-ROM of supplemental media for History of Civilization courses at BYU. The research and development of this project served as my honors capstone project and a full report is now archived at BYU under the same title as this ORCA report.

Prolegomenon To The Intercultural Study Of Self: A Lesson In Book-Making, Justin Halverson, Dr. Steven Sondrup Aug 2013

Prolegomenon To The Intercultural Study Of Self: A Lesson In Book-Making, Justin Halverson, Dr. Steven Sondrup

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the week of 4–8 October 1999, the College of Humanities at Brigham Young University in cooperation with the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies hosted a small conference dedicated to comparative concepts of self, especially with regard to the various firstperson narrative approaches to those concepts. The conference was attended by scholars from all parts of the globe: from the United States, Gerald Gillespie (Stanford University), Janet Walker (Rutgers University), Eugene Eoyang (Indiana University), J. Scott Miller (BYU), and Steven P. Sondrup (BYU); from the Netherlands, Mineke Schipper (Leiden University); from India, Amiya Dev (Vidyasagar University); from Brazil, …

“Mommy, Where Do Daddies Come From?”: The Media’S Portrayal Of Wwii Fathers, Melissa Brown, Dr. Mark Grandstaff Aug 2013

“Mommy, Where Do Daddies Come From?”: The Media’S Portrayal Of Wwii Fathers, Melissa Brown, Dr. Mark Grandstaff

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Betty Friedan, in her book, The Feminine Mystique argues that men shape women’s roles through the media, but at some points in time, the reverse has been true. During WWII, Parents’ Magazine, with it’s almost all-woman editorial board and largely female readership produced more articles on fatherhood than all the other parenting magazines put together. As the war dawned, many fathers left to fight, removing the buffering force that kept the magazine’s portrayal of the father’s role grounded in a reality. As a result, during the war years, Parents’ Magazine’s portrayal of fathers changed, as this analysis of over one …

Research Tom Polacca And His Descendants, Sterling Fluharty, Dr. David J. Whittaker Aug 2013

Research Tom Polacca And His Descendants, Sterling Fluharty, Dr. David J. Whittaker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Tom Polacca was a Hopi-Tewa in Arizona who was known for his leadership, progressive ideas, political involvement, and conversion to the Mormon Church. My intent was to research the life of him and his descendants, examining primary and secondary sources, as well as collecting oral history from descendants still living in Arizona. I expected to find a faith-promoting story of a man and his family’s quest for progress and truth. What happened, though, was a learning experience I had not anticipated.

Three-Dimensional Time Line, Michael Francom, Brian Christensen Aug 2013

Three-Dimensional Time Line, Michael Francom, Brian Christensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Time is a constant in our lives. We are completely wrapped up in its influence. We relate everything we do to this marching enigma. Its outward markings are day and night, equinox and solstice. What separates the present from the past or the future? How does the principle of entropy relate to times passing? Does time cause us to age or does our getting old mark time? All of these questions are difficult or impossible to answer.

The Development Of Musical Thought, Melissa J. Clayton, Jerry L. Jaccard Aug 2013

The Development Of Musical Thought, Melissa J. Clayton, Jerry L. Jaccard

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The task at hand, at the beginning of my research, was to discover the process of musical thought development in a child. Piaget’s similar research in mathematical thinking started with first discovering the content of children’s thought in mathematics, through clinical observation. Then he analyzed this content. He noticed changes at various points in a child’s growth. His observations and conclusions laid the foundation for a widely accepted theory. This theory is that children go through different stages of development as they learn (1). To discover the stages a child progresses through in attaining musical knowledge, I proposed to do …

Multigenre Writing For Teaching Literature At Banneker High School In Washington, D.C., Merinda Gurney Cutler, Dr. Sirpa T. Grierson Aug 2013

Multigenre Writing For Teaching Literature At Banneker High School In Washington, D.C., Merinda Gurney Cutler, Dr. Sirpa T. Grierson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Multigenre writing is a nontraditional style of writing developed by pioneers in education such as Peter Elbow, Tom Romano, and Sirpa T. Grierson. This form of writing is ideal for high school students who view writing, especially research writing, with apathy and boredom. Dr. Grierson’s approach to multigenre writing requires students to do traditional research on a topic, but then write about it in a creative way, using their imaginations to “[fill] out ‘the bones’ of the researched facts” (Grierson 52). This method of teaching literature, reasearch, and writing has been researched and tested extensively in Utah schools, and I …

Using Photographic Images To Learn Vocabulary And Culture In A Foreign Language Classroom, Brandy Harman, Chantel Thompson Aug 2013

Using Photographic Images To Learn Vocabulary And Culture In A Foreign Language Classroom, Brandy Harman, Chantel Thompson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Studies have found that foreign language students have greater success learning vocabulary when there is a visual to accompany the new words and concepts. It is also a good way to incorporate aspects of the target culture into the language lesson.

How Can We Make It Better? Translating An Innovative Medical Model Into Cutting Edge Design Curriculum, Barbara Mcfall, Cindy Beacham, Kathryn Burton, Ron Dulaney Jr. Aug 2013

How Can We Make It Better? Translating An Innovative Medical Model Into Cutting Edge Design Curriculum, Barbara Mcfall, Cindy Beacham, Kathryn Burton, Ron Dulaney Jr.

Learn X Design Conference Series

This is a story of design – of designing a viable present in transition from an increasingly obsolete past to a transformative future. More specifically, Karl Aspelund’s seven design process steps (2010) provided the framework for our curriculum redesign at a typical American Land Grant University. The inspiration surfaced from a combination of necessity and vision based on conditions within and around our design unit. Identification of the design problem resulted in key findings, among them that ours is a small design unit in a large university that explicitly favors STEM disciplines. Conceptualization provided a focus on human-centered design culture …
