The Murder Of A Travel Companion. Violence, Gender And Living Conditions Of Servants In 18th Century Prussia, Noa Sophie Kohler Aug 2013

The Murder Of A Travel Companion. Violence, Gender And Living Conditions Of Servants In 18th Century Prussia, Noa Sophie Kohler

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History

Jews are often portrayed as non-violent and therefore as powerless victims. Highlighting and examining cases of Jews as violent perpetrators not only refutes this stigmatization of Jews, it also reveals much about day to day life, about personal and social conflicts both within Jewish society and in encounters with the Christian society.

Discussed here sections of a legal document from the Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin Dahlem cover a court case against the Jewish servant, Samuel Saul, who was suspected of having murdered the Jewish maid Zierle in Prussia in 1791.

Building Appetites: The Design Of Locative Media Apps For Learning The Networked City, Andrew Morrison, Jonny Aspen Aug 2013

Building Appetites: The Design Of Locative Media Apps For Learning The Networked City, Andrew Morrison, Jonny Aspen

Learn X Design Conference Series

Recent years have seen the rapid growth of mobile communication and more recently smart phones and apps. But how might we approach ‘learning the networking city’? In this paper we reflect on the negotiation of a mobile app for cultural mapping of the networked city developed as part of a large design research project into social media and the city. The negotiation took place as part of an international master's level class of students of urbanism, architecture and design. The app called Streetscape was developed and trialled as part of a large funded research project into social media and the …

Revisiting Walter Macken’S Connemara, Eamon Maher Aug 2013

Revisiting Walter Macken’S Connemara, Eamon Maher

Articles

As a writer, Macken was attuned to the menacing depths that lay behind the physical exterior: the infertile bogland that makes farming problematic, the harsh character of the inhabitants, their callous treatment of one another, their superstitious religiosity and frustrated love affairs. I read most of Macken’s novels as a teenager and enjoyed them enormously. It is a shame that there is little or no critical attention now paid to someone who had such a successful career as a novelist, playwright, actor and director. Even the publication by his son Ultan of a biography, Walter Macken: Dreams on Paper, by …

Signaletics, Emilia Phillips Aug 2013

Signaletics, Emilia Phillips

University of Akron Press Publications

Signaletics pits the measured against the immeasurable, the body against identity, and the political against the personal. With a defunct 19th-century body measurement system of criminal identification as a foundation, the poems move in and out of history, only to arrive at the immediate voice of a speaker, distraught about the death of a child brother, the remove of a father, and the estrangement of the personal with the politics of her country.

Funerary Stela Of Heni, Risd Museum, Antoine Revoy, James Allen Aug 2013

Funerary Stela Of Heni, Risd Museum, Antoine Revoy, James Allen

Channel

Offered symbolically, the images and hieroglyphics depicted on the right of this funerary stela ensured that Heni, a local high official, would never experience hunger or thirst in the afterlife. The slightly awkward proportions of Heni’s figure are typical of monuments of the First Intermediate period, when there was no centralized government in Egypt. The lack of royal control over artistic production during this time allowed artists to experiment, as seen in the multiple levels of relief on Heni’s kilt, the particular green of the hieroglyphs, and the striped border. 2134-2040 BCE

Patterns Of Anti-Muslim Violence In Burma: A Call For Accountability And Prevention, Andrea Gittleman, Marissa Brodney, Holly G. Atkinson Aug 2013

Patterns Of Anti-Muslim Violence In Burma: A Call For Accountability And Prevention, Andrea Gittleman, Marissa Brodney, Holly G. Atkinson

Publications and Research

In this report, the authors documents how persecution of and violence against the Rohingya in Burma has spread to other Muslim communities throughout the country. Physicians for Human Rights conducted eight separate investigations in Burma and the surrounding region between 2004 and 2013. PHR’s most recent field research in early 2013 indicates a need for renewed attention to violence against minorities and impunity for such crimes. The findings presented in this report are based on investigations conducted in Burma over two separate visits for a combined 21-day period between March and May 2013.

History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Poland Prior To World War Ii, Nathan C. Phillips, Walter Whipple Aug 2013

History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Poland Prior To World War Ii, Nathan C. Phillips, Walter Whipple

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Poland Warsaw Mission, I came across historical records indicating that as early as 1860 branches of the Church were formed in present-day Poland. According to those records, some of these early branches reported significant membership, in the hundreds, only a few years after their formation. Branches exhibiting such successful growth included those located in the current cities of Szczecin, Wrocaw, and ary. Poland’s first known LDS chapel was built in the small village of Selbongen, present-day Zewgi, in the Mazura lake region of Northeast …

The Legacy Of Holocaust Rescuer Raoul Wallenberg, Ryan Aiken, Paul Kerry Aug 2013

The Legacy Of Holocaust Rescuer Raoul Wallenberg, Ryan Aiken, Paul Kerry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My research into the legacy of Holocaust rescuer Raoul Wallenberg is far from complete, and now, over nine months after beginning my investigation to accurately document Wallenberg’s heroic efforts to save Hungarian Jews during the last days of WWII, the overall emphasis of my original thesis has been redefined to – – hopefully – – merit the focused and lasting attention that Raoul Wallenberg so richly deserves and has been so long denied. Hundreds of books have been published documenting the exploits of Raoul Wallenberg, and within each work the individual authors adamantly petitioned the Government of the Former Soviet …

Tracking Fish And Human Response To Abrupt Environmental Change At Tse-Whit-Zen: A Large Native American Village On The Olympic Peninsula, Washington State, Kathryn Anne Mohlenhoff Aug 2013

Tracking Fish And Human Response To Abrupt Environmental Change At Tse-Whit-Zen: A Large Native American Village On The Olympic Peninsula, Washington State, Kathryn Anne Mohlenhoff

Dissertations and Theses

Evidence of large earthquakes occurring along the Pacific Northwest coast is reflected in coastal stratigraphy from Oregon to British Columbia, where there also exists an extensive archaeological record of Native American occupation. Tse-whit-zen, a large Native American village dating between 1824 and 54 cal B.P. located on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, was excavated with exceptionally fine stratigraphic control allowing for precise comparison of natural and cultural records. Here I report on the >10,000 fish remains from one 2x2 m excavation block; this assemblage spans one earthquake event, allowing study of changes in relative taxonomic abundance through time that …

Report On Orca-Funded Interpretation Research, Brian L. Price, Mariam B. Labrum Aug 2013

Report On Orca-Funded Interpretation Research, Brian L. Price, Mariam B. Labrum

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Last year I submitted a proposal for funding to support a research project aimed at improving the quality of interpreter training at the undergraduate level for all those students with demonstrated interest in the field of interpretation. I claimed that such improvements would benefit the existing Spanish Translation and Interpretation program at Brigham Young University, and could eventually serve the needs of other institutions. In the course of my investigation, I have determined that such improvements can be made with relatively little effort and without having to hire large quantities of additional staff to meet the needs of a stronger …

Artemus Millet: Architect To The Kingdom, Josh E. Probert, Dr. Larry C. Porter Aug 2013

Artemus Millet: Architect To The Kingdom, Josh E. Probert, Dr. Larry C. Porter

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Kirtland Temple has presided over the Kirtland Flats of Northern Ohio for 164 years as an architectural testimony of the faith and industry of the Kirtland Saints. Much has been said about the Temple and the events that transpired therein, yet there remained a paucity of information about its superintendent of construction – Artemus Millet. References to Millet are only passing ones in works related to the Kirtland period of Mormonism. To me, he deserved to be included among Truman Angell, William Folsom, and William Weeks as one of the great architects in LDS Church History. The goal of …

Orca Scholarship Report And Summary, Amy Morris Mcglashan, Robert Marshall Aug 2013

Orca Scholarship Report And Summary, Amy Morris Mcglashan, Robert Marshall

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I have been looking forward to the time to report on the results of my research project. I had proposed to study the writings of Robert Burns, travel to Scotland to experience the places he lived in and wrote about, and paint those places described in his ballads and poetry. The entire process was incredibly enjoyable, not to mention educational and inspiring.

Tma Historic Clothing Collection: Present And Future, Mary Ann Perkins, Cathie Mcclellan Aug 2013

Tma Historic Clothing Collection: Present And Future, Mary Ann Perkins, Cathie Mcclellan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When I submitted the proposal to catalogue the Theater and Media Arts Department collection of historic clothing, I had no idea what was ahead of me. Of course, I didn’t know the size of the collection, the content, or the relative value of the pieces included. Additionally, I wasn’t sure how to set up the organization. I knew I wanted to create an organization system that would be easy to access and add to. Over the intervening 8 months since my proposals acceptance, many ideas, solutions, and goals have been put before me by my mentor and other faculty regarding …

Charles Bukowski (1920-1994): Research And Critique Of An American Working-Class Poet, Dana Anderson, Dr. Lance Larsen Aug 2013

Charles Bukowski (1920-1994): Research And Critique Of An American Working-Class Poet, Dana Anderson, Dr. Lance Larsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1959, an inconspicuous Los Angeles postal worker named Charles Bukowski published his first book of poetry-Flower, Fist, and Bestial Wail in a press run of only 200 copies. Yet, by the time of his death last March he had sold over one and a half million copies of 46 volumes of poetry and pros works which have been translated into 20 languages and have generated a huge readership here and throughout Europe. Writing from the rigors of the working class, Bukowski was uniquely qualified in his critique of an “American dream” which no longer seemed plausible, of an America …

Creative Research Results And Short Story Collection, Holly A. Abbe, Dr. Susan Howe Aug 2013

Creative Research Results And Short Story Collection, Holly A. Abbe, Dr. Susan Howe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My father, Henry Reed, grew up in a small town in upper state New York where the sleepy hills turn orange and gold in the fall, where a man wearing white brings milk in bottles every morning to each door step, and where the church bells of the old Baptist Church are heard clearly every hour of the day. Fabius, New York is a wonderful town of only two hundred people. Every time I visited Fabius I felt as if I had traveled back in time when life was more simple and in many ways more enchanting. This is what …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To The American Travelogue: A Brief Look At The American South During The Civil Rights Movement, Justin G. Sangster Aug 2013

An Interdisciplinary Approach To The American Travelogue: A Brief Look At The American South During The Civil Rights Movement, Justin G. Sangster

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the interdisciplinary nature of travel writing. By focusing on American nonfiction travel writing, this study examines the historical quality of such texts. The validity of narrative nonfiction as a historical tool is addressed. Examples from John Steinbeck's Travel's with Charley and William Least Heat-Moon's Blue Highways, examples are given to show the historical value and social commentary associated with such literature. Specifically, can a reader formulate any historical insight of the region in America known as `The South' by reading two famous American travelogues? The answer is yes. With cautious consideration, a reader can use travel writing, …

The Constitution Or The Bible? Navigating The Quagmire Of Christian Fundamentalism In 21st Century America, James Paul Smith Aug 2013

The Constitution Or The Bible? Navigating The Quagmire Of Christian Fundamentalism In 21st Century America, James Paul Smith

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis is a rhetorical exploration of the historical and contemporary struggle in America regarding the relationship between government and religion in the public square. It begins in the nation's infancy with the first settlers, who, realizing that as Christians they were a religious majority, and no longer a persecuted minority. They then decided that being in control of religion and government was not such a bad thing after all. Ultimately, they reversed their thinking and became staunch advocates of a confluence between Christian religion and government. Other early patriots, who had witnessed the atrocities of such an entanglement on …

Weightless, Heather Leigh Burnett Aug 2013

Weightless, Heather Leigh Burnett

Theses and Dissertations

A narrative of reflective prose, "Weightless" is the story of a woman who chronicled her life in journals for more than thirty years, including twenty years after her father's gruesome murder. The story is about the power of love and forgiveness, self-acceptance and taking ownership of the struggles that manifest from grief. Through two murder trials, marriage and divorce, a sabbatical in Europe and many adventures in between, the author exposes her truth while exploring meaning that can arrive through self-awareness. Journal writing can be a profound tool during the healing process, and "Weightless" provides excerpts from the author's journals …

The Auxiliary Units: Britain's Last Line Of Defense During World War Ii, Cassy Rice Aug 2013

The Auxiliary Units: Britain's Last Line Of Defense During World War Ii, Cassy Rice

History Theses

The Auxiliary Unit was a secret highly trained group of men especially designed by Prime Minister Winston Churchill to be last line of defense for Britain if Hitler were to invade. Hitler was growing in power and strength at what seemed to be a daily rate, and he had just taken hold of France. Churchill and the rest of the United Kingdom not only felt threatened by an invasion, but they were also exceedingly concerned that the only thing separating Britain from Nazi Europe was the English Channel. If he were to successfully invade Britain, Hitler would have to overcome …

This piece was written for NAI's annual workshop this coming fall, but not everyone will have the chance to be in Reno to hear my presentation come November. So, why not give you a sneak peak of what I'm planning on discussing in Nevada? [excerpt]

A Week Of Saddened Hope: Arkansas's Response To The Assassination Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 4 April To 11 April, 1968, Allison Nicole Hiblong Aug 2013

A Week Of Saddened Hope: Arkansas's Response To The Assassination Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 4 April To 11 April, 1968, Allison Nicole Hiblong

Theses and Dissertations

The 4 April, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. The natural violence and chaos has been researched briefly thanks to Dr. King scholars and Clay Risen. The effects on Arkansas are virtually unknown. One prominent moment that is remembered was the memorial service on the Arkansas State Capitol steps with Governor Winthrop Rockefeller. Compared to parts of the nation, Arkansas was relatively calm in the aftermath of the assassination. Even though there were numerous shootings and fires set around the state there were no deaths in Arkansas, but over two dozen arrests were made. The …

Celebrating Color, Endia Renee' Bumgarner Aug 2013

Celebrating Color, Endia Renee' Bumgarner

Theses and Dissertations

To celebrate is to rejoice, appreciate, and fully marvel. For nearly a decade I have manipulated paint and imposed upon canvas using various methods and techniques in order to invent art. However, of all that I have explored and learned, one discovery will be celebrated in my exhibits for decades to come, that is color. Color resonates with great authority. Noted scholar and artist Robert Henri said, "The value of an image rests in its constructive beauty. Its story, the fact that it is about a man, a boy, a landscape, an event which transpires, is merely incidental to its …

Secondary Literacy: Technology And The Evolution Of Composition Pedagogy, Abigail Perrine Aug 2013

Secondary Literacy: Technology And The Evolution Of Composition Pedagogy, Abigail Perrine

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the theory of secondary literacy to give teachers an understanding of how technology shapes the thought processes of students. Based on the foundational theoretical work by scholar Walter J. Ong, secondary literacy describes the communicative practices of our digital age. This theory offers a means for understanding how our minds have shifted based on changes in our communicative technologies and how these changes affect the way we process ideas, store information, and create knowledge. In addition, this thesis offers practical applications for secondary literacy in terms of assignments, assessment, and pedagogical goals for composition studies. By using …

The Case Of Atticus Finch: A Modern Dissoi Logoi For Lawyers, Jessica Mcwilliams Aug 2013

The Case Of Atticus Finch: A Modern Dissoi Logoi For Lawyers, Jessica Mcwilliams

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an interdisciplinary work which uses a combination of political science, literature, and rhetoric to form a modern dissoi logoi using the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The thesis itself is broken up into three parts: an introductory preface, and two separate arguments. The first argument uses a rhetorical analysis on its own to examine the rhetoric used by Atticus Finch in his courtroom defense to argue that Atticus's defense was a rhetorical failure, in that it failed to persuade the jurors of his client's innocence and prevent conviction. The second argument uses rhetorical analysis …

On The Defense: Reading Isocrates' Antidosis As A Response To Plato's Phaedrus, Caleb James Aug 2013

On The Defense: Reading Isocrates' Antidosis As A Response To Plato's Phaedrus, Caleb James

Theses and Dissertations

This project reviews Isocrates' defense of the charges brought against him in the Antidosis. The central claim is that the charges he lists are perceived criticisms of him and his educational program presented in Plato's Phaedrus. This project attempts to connect Isocrates' defense of those charges with passages from the Phaedrus to which it seems he is replying.

Breastfeeding: An Analysis And Community-Based Curriculum For The Contemporary Central Arkansas Audience, Jennifer Susan Atkins-Gordeeva Aug 2013

Breastfeeding: An Analysis And Community-Based Curriculum For The Contemporary Central Arkansas Audience, Jennifer Susan Atkins-Gordeeva

Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary society includes many features that impede women's decision-making about infant feeding. The Central Arkansas community is particularly affected by those features. Because informed decision-making involves an acknowledgment of the risks of formula use, breastfeeding advocates must talk about risk. This curriculum offers one way to discuss risks of formula and challenges and supports within the community, to create a supportive environment for making informed decisions, and to commit to a lactation plan, inside a supportive, community-based setting.
