(First paragraph) In a home with two children under six, managing to find the time and the games that allow for play with a partner who has completely different tastes and capabilities produces compromises both inside and outside the game, as well as a hybrid form that spans the two. This last point highlights the fact that compromise remains a popularly studied topic in considerations of games, but only within very discrete boundaries that do not necessarily have anything to do with play or with players. At first, American pragmatism was not met with an overabundance of understanding or appreciation abroad. Among the early detractors were the social theorists from the Frankfurt School, Max Horkheimer chief among them who, in “Means and Ends,” criticized pragmatism as instrumentalism at its most cold, calculating, and myopic, reducing all thought to action and all philosophy to selfish, practical pursuits. Hospitality, violence, and the formation of conscience constitute one of those rare topics that has occupied my thoughts since youth. In the Winter of nineteen-eighty-nine and ninety, a cascade of frenetic, revolutionary events ripped through Eastern Europe, transforming the lives of millions of ordinary people, altering the geopolitical power-structures that had been in place for over have a century – the Fall of Communism. The story I want to tell takes place at this moment in world-history and concerns the birth of conscience in the life of a fourteen year-old boy.

One of the ways we learn about each other is through the stories we tell about ourselves and others. Through stories, we learn not only about the experiences of others but also, potentially, what the experiences mean to those others. Although stories can bridge understanding, and perhaps provide opportunities for empathy across difference, we also need to pay attention to the limits and costs of our storytelling. Empathy doesn’t entirely remove the gap but instead occurs as part of an exchange between tellers and listeners in which, at best, people are aware of both the possibilities and limits of understanding …

Zombies And The Post-Colonial Italian Unconscious, Simone Brioni

This article analyses the relationship between the horror genre and colonialism by focusing on Lucio Fulci’s Zombi 2 (1979) and discusses how and to what extent the colonial overtones of this film provide a fictional representation of the Italian collective unconscious fear of African immigration, which resurrected the memory of forgotten colonial crimes in Africa. Drawing on postcolonial theory and psychoanalysis, this article also underlines how xenophobe political propaganda has employed horror imagery – and especially that provided by zombie movies – in order to discriminate against immigrants.

The objective of this research is to see how the concept of Avalokitesvara and Buddhas is explained in the Karanaavyuha Sutra. To do so, I shall study and analyze the ideas regarding the Buddhas, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Adibuddha as found in the Karandavyuha Sutra. The Karandavyuha Sutra is one of the primary sources of Mahayana Buddhism composed in Sanskrit, which has been used as the basis for both teaching and practicing Buddhism in many different Mahayana schools. While a corpus linguistic technique has been applied to various studies in text and discourse analysis, it has not been much adopted in stylistic analysis of literary texts. The present study, therefore, applies a corpus-driven approach to Jane Austen's six major novels, in order to see how well this new method works with literary texts, compared with what has been observed in previous studies of Jane Austen's language. It has been found that the corpus-driven approach can provide quite a few results that are useful in supporting and refining literary scholars' intuitive observations on the author's works. Folklore, such as the narratives of the supernatural, functions as a vehicle for elements of culture such as belief systems, ideologies and shared memories. This study explores the changes undergone by Philippine narratives of the supernatural vis-à-vis the urban development of the community where they thrive. It is demonstrated that the characters of the narratives of the supernatural are perceived to be of equal or even higher stature than those of members of the rural communities. The paper aims to investigate how Bangkok is represented in contemporary Thai literature, including those works by such authors of renown as Chamlong Fangcholachit, Prabda Yoon, and Paritas Hutangkul. Extant research on racial identity formation among multiracial individuals with one black parent focuses on the determinants of a multiracial versus monoracial identification (Harris and Sim 2002) and the negotiation of racial identification with peers, family, or friends (Rockquemore and Brunsma 2002, Khanna and Johnson 2010, Khanna 2010). In addition, a fair amount of research examines whether multiracial identification harms or promotes the psychological well-being of these individuals (see Binning et al. 2009 and Cheng and Lively 2009 for contrasting findings). Whether on matters of politics or physics, Aristotle's criticism of his predecessors is not generally considered a model of charitable interpretation. He seems to prefer, as Christopher Rowe puts it, "polemic over accuracy" (2003, 90). His criticism of the Laws is particularly puzzling: It is much shorter than his discussion of the Republic and raises primarily technical objections of questionable validity. Indeed, some well-known commentators have concluded the criticisms, as we have them in the Politics, were made of an earlier draft of the Laws and that Plato, in light of these criticisms, revised the final version. Formal administrative protocols for responding to bias incidents are now the norm in higher education. This article considers these developments by posing critical questions about racial justice work on campus, identifying key features of an under-acknowledged institutional racism, and contributing to discussions about ways that diversity and social justice efforts often reproduce rather than challenge systemic inequities.

To many people love is special, sacred even. Love plays a countless number of roles for a countless number of people. Contemporary ideas about love, however, are more in alignment with the philosophies of Aristotle, and not of Plato. Aristotle held that love could exist as many people see it today – wishing well for others purely for their own sake. But Plato disagreed. The aim of this paper is to examine the propaganda power of Madison’s Solidarity Sing-Along. To do so, I will modify the Epistemic Merit Model of propaganda so that it can account for a broader spectrum of propaganda. I will show how this is consistent with other accounts of musical pragmatics and the potential political function of songs and music. This will provide the ground for a robust interpretation of the political meanings of the Solidarity Sing-Along.
