Science, Sentience, And Animal Welfare, Robert C. Jones Jan 2013

Science, Sentience, And Animal Welfare, Robert C. Jones

Ethics and Animal Welfare Collection

I sketch briefly some of the more influential theories concerned with the moral status of nonhuman animals, highlighting their biological/physiological aspects. I then survey the most prominent empirical research on the physiological and cognitive capacities of nonhuman animals, focusing primarily on sentience, but looking also at a few other morally relevant capacities such as self-awareness, memory, and mindreading. Lastly, I discuss two examples of current animal welfare policy, namely, animals used in industrialized food production and in scientific research. I argue that even the most progressive current welfare policies lag behind, are ignorant of, or arbitrarily disregard the science on …

Caracalla's Armenia, Lee E. Patterson Jan 2013

Caracalla's Armenia, Lee E. Patterson

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

We are hard pressed to understand the events of Caracalla's Parthian war, including the role Armenia played in the conflict, because of gross inadequacies in our sources. A careful analysis suggests that Caracalla intended to annex Armenia but never saw the project through. His intentions can be gauged by his treatment of Edessa, for whose annexation the evidence is more solid. Caracalla was trying to secure his rear, from Osrhoene to Armenia, in preparation for a full-scale Parthian war. Because the goal of stabilizing Armenia proved elusive, given local hostilities, Caracalla had to scale back his plans.

Japan In Perspective: Visual Narratives Of Difference In Japanese History, Jinhee Lee

Dokdo Island (or Tokdo in Korean; Takeshima in Japanese; Liancourt Rocks in French/English) consists of a group of disputed islets in the sea between Korea and Japan. Although South Koreacurrently controls the islets Japan has claimed the contested territory. While Korean claim is based on its historical records dating from the sixth century, Japanese takes the records of the seventeenth century, the era of its colonial rule over Korea (1910-45), and the U.S. document at the end of WWII. More recently, the U.S. Library of Congress faced much challenge from within and without both academia and popular media as it …

Forming University And Teacher Partnerships In An Effort To Reframe And Rethink Mentoring Programs, Megan Guise Jan 2013

Forming University And Teacher Partnerships In An Effort To Reframe And Rethink Mentoring Programs, Megan Guise

English

Instead of thinking about teacher development as a series of discrete stages, mentors in schools and universities might re-conceptualize the process as a continuum, with the faculty involved in the preparation continuing a partnership to support the development of beginners in the schools.

Lo Abyecto Vs. Lo Sagrado: Los Siete Pecados Capitales Y La Naturaleza En La Charca De Manuel Zeno Gandía, Alessia Dalsant Jan 2013

Lo Abyecto Vs. Lo Sagrado: Los Siete Pecados Capitales Y La Naturaleza En La Charca De Manuel Zeno Gandía, Alessia Dalsant

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Open Peer Review: Collective Intelligence As A Framework For Theorizing Approaches To Peer Review In The Humanities, Jenna Sheffield

English Faculty Publications

In this NANO note, I focus on online commenting functions and how they have been—and can be—used for open peer review to help improve the quality of an author’s scholarly work and change the way publishers go about their peer review processes. While open peer review is not necessarily digital, digital technologies allow for a broader range of participants and faster dissemination of knowledge, which is why this article focuses on online open peer review. I focus on commenting functions because they are becoming the niche technology through which open peer review is occurring in digital spaces. In addition, commenting …

Do You Have The Personality For Teaching Music?, David W. Snyder Jan 2013

Do You Have The Personality For Teaching Music?, David W. Snyder

Faculty Publications - Music

Six different classes of music education majors enrolled in a large Midwestern university were asked to take an online personality survey and then were tracked through graduation. Personality types, as determined by the Myers- Briggs Personality Type test, were then examined for how they related to choice of major and attrition within the music education degree program. The hope was to combine these findings with other research done on personality and get a snap shot of what personality types are drawn to teaching choir and further what types persist through graduation.
