Sense-Making Bodies: Feminist Materiality And Phenomenology In Constructive Body Theologies, Heike Peckruhn Jan 2013

Sense-Making Bodies: Feminist Materiality And Phenomenology In Constructive Body Theologies, Heike Peckruhn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Constructive body theology provides an ethical commitment to and a set of analytical principles for understanding bodily experience. If we insist upon the theological value of embodied experience, how can we give an adequate account of it? Are feminist appeals to the senses useful in developing theological truth claims based in embodied experiences? Feminist theologies which explicitly seek to overcome body/mind dualisms often reinscribe them when they neglect to attend to perception as a critical element of bodily experience. Phenomenological analyses of perception (such as suggested by Merleau-Ponty) strengthen and refine our conception of embodiment. Grounding constructive theology in experience …

The Caustic Pen Is Mightiest: A Tradition Of Female Satire In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Ivy Compton-Burnett, And Muriel Spark, Jaclyn Andrea Reed Jan 2013

The Caustic Pen Is Mightiest: A Tradition Of Female Satire In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Ivy Compton-Burnett, And Muriel Spark, Jaclyn Andrea Reed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Female satirists have long been treated by critics as anomalies within an androcentric genre because of the reticence to acknowledge women's right to express aggression through their writing. In Pride and Prejudice (1813), A House and Its Head (1935), and The Girls of Slender Means (1963), Jane Austen (1775-1817), Ivy Compton-Burnett (1884-1969), and Muriel Spark (1918-2006) all combine elements of realism and satire within the vehicle of the domestic novel to target institutions of their patriarchal societies, including marriage and family dynamics, as well as the evolving conceptions of domesticity and femininity, with a subtle feminism. These female satirists illuminate …

"Our Father Isaac": Reading The Sahidic Testament Of Isaac In An Egyptian Monastic Context, John William Fadden Jan 2013

"Our Father Isaac": Reading The Sahidic Testament Of Isaac In An Egyptian Monastic Context, John William Fadden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the textual community of fourth or fifth century monastic Egypt read Testament of Isaac as an ascetical regimen in order to transform themselves into children of Isaac. T. Isaac highlights three particular dimensions of Isaac's character from the remembered tradition of Isaac that would have resonated in the Egyptian monastic context of the textual community - Isaac as priestly authority, Isaac as sacrifice, and Isaac as blind ascetic - to create a model for the new self that the textual community aimed to achieve. Two important ascetic practices in T. Isaac that the textual community was …

Cultural Suppression Of Native Nations Through United States Government Policy, Nicholas Augustus Brace Jan 2013

Cultural Suppression Of Native Nations Through United States Government Policy, Nicholas Augustus Brace

Theses Digitization Project

This study will discuss Native American discrimination by the U.S. government while focusing on the education system and policies the Native Americans suffered through. A push to remove the sovereignty of Native Nations through assimilation by the U.S. government has led to arguments that Native Americans have been the recipients of cultural suppression.

Visualizing Hate: Maus As Holocaust Literature, Geoffrey Daniel Curran Jan 2013

Visualizing Hate: Maus As Holocaust Literature, Geoffrey Daniel Curran

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how Art Spiegelman's graphic novel Maus affected traditional classifications of Holocaust writings, specifically literary memoir. Genre studies use Holocaust writings especially those classified as "literary memoirs", to define a narrow group to exclusion of texts like Maus. If Maus was not 'allowed' to be defined as memoir then was it solely cast as fiction? To view it as fictional would have denied that Maus was a graphic novel which interlaces both received testimonial 'truth' and receptive 'truth'.

Sperm Stealers & Post Gay Politics: Lesbian-Parented Families In Film And Television, Elena Rose Martinez

Theses Digitization Project

This study is theoretically significant because it addresses gaps in scholarly knowledge regarding media representations of same-sex parented families, and more specficially, lesbian-parented families. Findings of this study may also inform content-producers as to trends in representation and relevant issues of power and sexuality as well as political-economic factors to consider in future productions. This study addresses the political economy of a segment of sexual minorities that already have an uneasy history with marketers: lesbians.

Art Education: Perspectives From Lonergan, Langer And Maslow, Richard Liddy Jan 2013

Art Education: Perspectives From Lonergan, Langer And Maslow, Richard Liddy

Department of Religion Publications

The Content Of Thought Experiments And Philosophical Context, Kevin G. Gilfether Jan 2013

The Content Of Thought Experiments And Philosophical Context, Kevin G. Gilfether

Honors Papers

Thought experiments are one common method of trying to make a philosophical point. However, there is the question of how useful thought experiments are in telling us about the world: what does thinking about killing a king tell us about actually killing a king? Timothy Williamson offers an account of thought experiments based upon a general cognitive capacity to consider counterfactuals. Anna-Sara Malmgren is critical of such a capacity. This work assess both accounts in the context of common philosophical thought experiments and finds Williamson's could be sharpened by considerations from philosophical context and facts from cognitive science.

Teaching Witchcraft In The Digital Age: Adventures In An Online Village, Jennifer Mcnabb

Quidditas

Perhaps nothing is more valued in the modern classroom than student engagement. Pedagogical strategies and exercises for encouraging active learning are both wide-ranging and plentiful. Among the most popular at present is Barnard College’s Reacting to the Past (RTTP) role-playing games: “Reacting to the Past (RTTP) consists of elaborate games, set in the past, in which students are assigned roles informed by classic texts in the history of ideas. Class sessions are run entirely by students; instructors advise and guide students and grade their oral and written work. It seeks to draw students into the past, promote engagement with big …

Letter To A Doubter, Terryl Givens

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

I understand that some doubts have arisen in your mind. I don’t know for sure what they are, but I imagine I have heard them before. Probably I have entertained some of them in my own mind. And perhaps I still harbor some of them myself. I am not going to respond to them in the ways that you may have anticipated. Oh, I will say a few things about why many doubts felt by the previously faithful and faith-filled are ill-founded and misplaced: the result of poor teaching, naïve assumptions, cultural pressures, and outright false doctrines. But my main …

Vindicating Josiah, William J. Hamblin Jan 2013

Vindicating Josiah, William J. Hamblin

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Margaret Barker has written a number of fascinating books on ancient Israelite and Christian temple theology. One of her main arguments is that the temple reforms of Josiah corrupted the pristine original Israelite temple theology. Josiah’s reforms were therefore, in some sense, an apostasy. According to Barker, early Christianity is based on the pristine, original pre- Josiah form of temple theology. This paper argues that Josiah’s reforms were a necessary correction to contemporary corruption of the Israelite temple rituals and theologies, and that the type of temple apostasy Barker describes is more likely associated with the Hasmoneans.
