Chaucer's Clerk's Tale And Boccaccio's Decameron X.10, Jessica Harkins Jan 2013

Chaucer's Clerk's Tale And Boccaccio's Decameron X.10, Jessica Harkins

English Faculty Publications

Many readers find that Chaucer's Clerk's Tale profoundly critiques Petrarch's methods of translation, but hesitate to claim that Chaucer knew the text Petrarch was translating: Boccaccio's version of the Griselda story from the Decameron. This hesitation goes back to J. Burke Severs's assertion that Chaucer did not know Boccaccio's text. David Wallace began to undermine this argument by drawing attention to shared textual traits of these two versions of the story, but only John Finlayson has advanced the case directly against Severs by arguing that Boccaccio must be a source. What has perhaps most prevented a shift in our reading …

Nietzsche And Darwin, Babette Babich Jan 2013

Nietzsche And Darwin, Babette Babich

Working Papers

Abstract

I argue against the popular view of Nietzsche as Darwinist and I concur with other Nietzsche scholars who have also noted that other authors worked in Nietzsche’s thinking in association with Darwin, not only Spencer and Malthus but also Roux and Haeckel among others which also for Nietzsche included Empedocles and other ancient scientists. Nietzsche offers plain condemnation of Darwin’s views but he is also often associated with Darwin owing to Darwin’s racism and his own vision of rank-order. I conclude with an emphasis on style and Nietzsche’s reading of antiquity to highlight the distinction he sought to make …

Raising A Sense Of Self-Worth: Action Research On Self-Compassion In An English Program, Shinichiro Matsuguma Jan 2013

Raising A Sense Of Self-Worth: Action Research On Self-Compassion In An English Program, Shinichiro Matsuguma

MA TESOL Collection

The suicide rate among Japanese youth has been dramatically increasing over the last decade due to the downturn economy and their lack of sense of self-worth. In this qualitative action research, the author introduces the concept of self-compassion to Japanese youth in a content-based English classroom as an attempt to raise their sense of self-worth. The research shows that self-compassion has a possibility of providing Japanese young people with more rational perceptions of themselves, creating an emotionally supportive environment, and allowing them to develop their self-awareness. The author concludes that it is this development of self-awareness that can raise the …

Transformations In Body And Cuisine In Rural Yucatan, Mexico, Lauren Wynne Jan 2013

Transformations In Body And Cuisine In Rural Yucatan, Mexico, Lauren Wynne

Anthropology and Sociology Faculty Publications

Many twentieth-century ethnographic accounts of the rural Yucatec Maya analyze the accruement of culinary knowledge as a crucial part of the process of socialization, by which children become adults (e.g., Gaskins 2003; Greene 2002). Indeed, in the rural town of Juubche, fairly predictable culinary milestones continue to mark the lives of girls and women. Some young women, however, are using their access to new foods and related knowledge to challenge both local hierarchies of expertise and ideologies of racial difference. For many young women in Juubche, there is a link between consuming new foods and identifying oneself with larger Yucatecan …

Forced Outage, Caitlin Jackson Jan 2013

Forced Outage, Caitlin Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This collection of poems explores an inner emotional life contrasted with a plodding existence in the external world of day to day business as usual. The poems embrace the importance of noting moments of beauty and grace in an otherwise bland landscape, and mourn the difficulty of holding onto such moments as life moves forward. These poems lead the way down bumpy emotional roads and explore the struggle to make human connections in simple circumstances. Most important, they attempt to capture the beauty of the connections that come from these struggles, and the triumphant promise that we are not alone.
