The Synthesis Of Anglo-Saxon And Christian Traditions In The Old English Judith, Sarah E. Eakin
The Synthesis Of Anglo-Saxon And Christian Traditions In The Old English Judith, Sarah E. Eakin
ETD Archive
The Anglo-Saxons were a people who took great pride in their heritage and culture. However, they faced various challenges in preserving the pagan traditions of their Nordic ancestors while being heavily influenced by Christianity. Many Anglo-Saxon texts demonstrate these cultural challenges, but the Book of Judith, found in the Nowell-Codex, attempts to unify the two conflicting cultures by uniting Anglo-Saxon and Christians traditions in a distinctly Old English format. The Old English adaptation of the Latin Vulgate Judith text portrays the actions of the heroine in light of Christianity while incorporating deeply-rooted Anglo-Saxon traditions. Judith is the unifying figure within …
Othering, Mirroring, And Identity In John Edgar Wideman's Brothers And Keepers, James E. Walker
Othering, Mirroring, And Identity In John Edgar Wideman's Brothers And Keepers, James E. Walker
ETD Archive
Jacques Lacan's notion of the mirror stage of human development, formulated from the theories of Sigmund Freud, lies at the core of psychoanalytic theory. Fundamental components of the mirror stage include the concepts of Otherness and Identity. This examination proffers a critical reading of John Edgar Wideman's Brothers and Keepers, through a psychoanalytic matrix and contemporary constructions of Othering, Mirroring, and Identity. To that end, this examination traces the evolution of the ways subsequent scholars have understood, applied, and expanded Lacan's classical mirror stage, and its components. Nancy VanDerHeide transforms the solitary, individual, experience of Lacan's mirror stage into a …

Wampum, Tawagonshi, And The Two Row Belt, Paul Otto
Wampum, Tawagonshi, And The Two Row Belt, Paul Otto
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
This essay outlines the early history of wampum, explaining its origin, its value to Native Americans, and its first observations by Europeans. It then considers how wampum, as it existed in the 1610s, fits the role of wampum as described in the Tawagonshi document and fits with its manifestation in the Two Row Belt. The essay argues that key elements in the Tawagonshi document and the Two Row Belt itself are inconsistent with wampum use as recorded in archaeological, documentary, and visual sources. This finding does not discount the possibility of a Dutch-Native agreement similar to the one recorded in …

A Call To Action: Conflict And Change In Three Major African Novels, Kate St. Ives
The Corinthian
A Grain of Wheat, The Sun By Night, and Nervous Conditions are each set in a time period and country in Africa in which tremendous changes are taking place. These changes come in many forms such as clashes between different belief systems, the development of new governments, and the changing roles of women.
Speaking Franco: Francisco Franco And The Evolution Of Spanish Artistic Voice, Kathryn Lea
Speaking Franco: Francisco Franco And The Evolution Of Spanish Artistic Voice, Kathryn Lea
The Corinthian
Throughout history and across the globe examples of political regimes’ ability to control and shape the artistic canon of their peoples abound. Fascist regimes across the world have demonstrated the power of the state to influence and manipulate the public consciousness through art, and perhaps nowhere was this phenomenon more profoundly felt than in twentieth century Europe as Spain struggled under the dictatorial oppression of Francisco Franco.
The Roots Of Organized Resistance: African American Political Mobilization In Southwest Georgia, 1918-1945, John H. Cable
The Roots Of Organized Resistance: African American Political Mobilization In Southwest Georgia, 1918-1945, John H. Cable
The Corinthian
Following World War I, a new, militant spirit of resistance and activism burgeoned among African-American citizens across the United States. Empowered by the sense that blacks had played a crucial role in the conflict, the descendants of freedmen returned home to fight for their own rights only to find persecution; this dire situation called for immediate, decisive action. During the interwar years, African Americans in the southwest Georgia Black Belt fought for community empowerment and, through the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), and numerous other political and labor-oriented groups, established …

Rome, Ostia, Pompeii: Movement And Space [Review], Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Rome, Ostia, Pompeii: Movement And Space [Review], Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Classical Studies Faculty Research
Archaeologists and historians have set out to reconstruct Rome, in one way or another, from the very beginning of the profession. More recently, scholars have begun to design 3-D simulations of ancient sites and monuments; even Google Earth offers the option of ‘visiting’ ancient Rome as it appeared in A.D. 320. According to the editors of this stimulating volume, however, these reconstructions, with their vast empty spaces and pristine monuments, ignore an important part of ancient Rome: the people, animals, and vehicles that moved through the cityscape. And as anyone who has ever traveled knows, different cities move in different …
Platonism Vs. Nominalism In Contemporary Musical Ontology, Andrew Kania
Platonism Vs. Nominalism In Contemporary Musical Ontology, Andrew Kania
Philosophy Faculty Research
Ontological theories of musical works fall into two broad classes, according to whether or not they take musical works to be abstract objects of some sort. I shall use the terms 'Platonism' and 'nominalism' to refer to these two kinds of theory. In this chapter I first outline contemporary Platonism about musical works—the theory that musical works are abstract objects. I then consider reasons to be suspicious of such a view, motivating a consideration of nominalist theories of musical works. I argue for two conclusions: first, that there are no compelling reasons to be a nominalist about musical works in …

Do Other People "Gape" At Your Writing?, Jennifer Brown, Erinn Bentley
Do Other People "Gape" At Your Writing?, Jennifer Brown, Erinn Bentley
Faculty Bibliography
The students who are struggling with K-12 writing are now in post-secondary school. Despite English composition completion during the freshman year, the majority of these students remain novice writers. Some of these novice writers will become elementary, middle grades, or secondary teachers upon graduating. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a mini-lesson unit on the students' knowledge of common grammar, audience, and punctuation errors. The results of the pre/post research design revealed a significant increase in knowledge. Future implications include expanding the mini-lesson unit and assisting students with transferring the knowledge into their written assignments.
Historical Butches: Lesbian Experience And Masculinity In Bryher's Historical Fiction, Haley M. Fedor
Historical Butches: Lesbian Experience And Masculinity In Bryher's Historical Fiction, Haley M. Fedor
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This project analyzes three of Bryher's historical novels, while also providing background on the shadowy figure of Bryher herself. Looking at Gate to the Sea, Roman Wall, and Ruan, each serves to represent lesbianism in a variety of coded or metaphorical ways. Various geographical locations or landscapes serve to either represent or depict homosexual desire, and also construct queer spaces for characters to traverse. Limited scholarship exists on any of Bryher's works, particularly that which looks at lesbian sexuality. The genre Bryher writes in allows for a cross-writing of lesbian characters, or gendering lesbian characters as male, and displays awareness …
A Word Is Worth A Thousand Pictures: A Systemic Functional And Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Intersemiotic Evaluation In University Science Textbooks, Leo William Roehrich
A Word Is Worth A Thousand Pictures: A Systemic Functional And Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Intersemiotic Evaluation In University Science Textbooks, Leo William Roehrich
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Images are an invaluable medium in science textbooks for clarifying confusing concepts and establishing a visual foundation for field related topics. The integration of image and language within a single unit of discourse builds a larger meaning than the two semiotic forms are capable of producing separately. Visual representations are chosen for their functional value in aiding linguistic explanation and also for their aesthetic value in textual enhancement. Aesthetic choice is a matter of subjective opinion. Although science writing is generally classified as objective, authors embed personal opinion in written and visual discourse. The choice of visual medium has a …
Who Is You? Identifying "You" In Second-Person Narratives: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Analysis, Davina Kittrell
Who Is You? Identifying "You" In Second-Person Narratives: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Analysis, Davina Kittrell
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In narratives, characters are introduced to readers through the use of textual clues left by the author. These clues, often in the form of pronouns, enable the reader to follow the various characters involved throughout the story. Pronouns have no lexical content and are used as referential devices, guiding the reader through the story and helping them recover the identity of the story’s characters. However, some narratives employ a literary technique in which the story’s protagonist is introduced by the pronoun “you” with no previous textual information given. As a result the pronoun “you” is assumed to be exophoric, pointing …
A Contrastive Systemic Functional Analysis Of Causality In Japanese And English Academic Articles, Masaki Shibata
A Contrastive Systemic Functional Analysis Of Causality In Japanese And English Academic Articles, Masaki Shibata
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Typological differences between languages have been a much debated topic in linguistic studies. Despite their usefulness in understanding syntactic features of various languages, such contrastive analyses have yet to thoroughly explore semantic variation among languages; furthermore, the results obtained have not been practically utilized in other areas of applied linguistics. This situation may come from the fact that a large number of contrastive studies have eclectically examined isolated areas of language variation either from syntactic, morphological, or from pragmatic perspectives. Viewing this issue from another angle, Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) focuses on language from a multi-dimensional perspective, where language is …
Approaches To Life Narrative: A Scholarly And Creative Thesis, Tanya Bomsta
Approaches To Life Narrative: A Scholarly And Creative Thesis, Tanya Bomsta
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This thesis includes both scholarly and creative approaches to women’s life narrative and rhetoric. The author first analyzes Terry Tempest Williams’ recently published memoir, When Women Were Birds: Fifty-Four Variations on Voice, through the lenses of writing and rhetorical theory. She examines how Williams’ hybrid genre negotiates the boundaries between journaling and autobiographical writing and between silence and voice. She argues that Williams employs a feminist rhetoric in her writing in order to negotiate these boundaries.
The second and third works are personal essays in which the author examines her journals and her marriage. These creative works meditate on the …
Text Complexity In Graded Readers: A Systemic Functional Look, Sally-Ann Newnham
Text Complexity In Graded Readers: A Systemic Functional Look, Sally-Ann Newnham
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Utilizing the Systemic Functional Linguistic frameworks of taxis, logico-semantic relation, grammatical metaphor, and appraisal, this thesis examines two of the most popular rewrites: Jane Eyre and The Canterville Ghost from the Macmillian Reader, Black Cat Reading and Training, Oxford Bookworm, and Penguin ELT graded reader series. Although a considerable body of literature exists concerning graded readers, the majority of research tends to focus on statistical gains in fluency development or vocabulary acquisition and their retention rather than the linguistic properties of these texts. Furthermore, studies on textual adaptations primarily take a broad corpus-style approach, contrasting altered and unaltered material, rather …
The Interplay Of Authorial Control And Readerly Judgments In Ian Mcewan's Atonement, Marissa Danaé Nelson
The Interplay Of Authorial Control And Readerly Judgments In Ian Mcewan's Atonement, Marissa Danaé Nelson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Mainly focusing on postmodern literary theory, I will analyze Ian McEwan’s Atonement and suggest how it becomes a simulacrum due to the protagonist, Briony Tallis taking control of authorship from McEwan and expressing how she is the author of the text. Because Briony negates an important aspect of the novel, hyperreality occurs. This thesis will look at the role McEwan plays as author of Atonement, how main characters Robbie and Cecelia take part within this fictional world and how they become aware of an authorial presence within their lives, how Briony takes ultimate control of the pen and appoints herself …
Mike & Molly -- An Other World, Maureen Elizabeth Johnson
Mike & Molly -- An Other World, Maureen Elizabeth Johnson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This thesis explores the impact of the television show Mike & Molly on the modern debate related to fat in America. The thesis uses the work of Michel Foucault as well as disability scholars such as Lennard Davis and feminist scholars such as bell hooks to examine how a comedy show like Mike & Molly can further disenfranchise fat people in society. The thesis shows that fat makes people an Other in society, and television shows and other forms of comedy that mock those who are fat just reinforce that Other status.
