Abstract
Most of Aristotle's texts dealing with truth are unexceptionable: truth belongs only to sentences or beliefs, and it does so in virtue of a correspondence between those sentences or beliefs and the things in the world that they are about. Single words cannot be true, and the things in the world, whether single or compound, cannot be true either. There is however one text, Chapter 10 of Book Theta of the Metaphysics, that breaks with these familiar and comfortable views; it allows that single words or thoughts can be true, and also …

In honor of the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Jan. 1, 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, Lawrence University presents a series of Civil War-related events. All are free and open to the public.
Lawrence is currently hosting a traveling exhibition that examines how President Abraham Lincoln used the U.S. Constitution to confront three intertwined crises of the Civil War: the secession of Southern states, slavery and wartime civil liberties.
The 1,000-square-foot exhibit, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” is displayed on the second floor of Lawrence’s Seeley G. Mudd Library until Feb. 8. The exhibition is free and open to …

Letter, 8 January 1865, from Jonathan Wood, Smithfield, Pennsylvania, to his son, Union soldier Pliny Wood. He writes with sympathy for the soldiers’ hardships, instructs him on saving postage, criticizes the privileges of congressmen, expresses contempt for the treason of Jefferson Davis and the Confederates, and remarks on the suffering of prisoners of war at Andersonville, Georgia; nevertheless, he hopes for reconciliation with ordinary Southerners after their defeat and repentance.
