A New Introduction To American Constitutionalism, Mark Graber
A New Introduction To American Constitutionalism, Mark Graber
Mark Graber
A New Introduction to American Constitutionalism is the first text to study the entirety of American constitutionalism, not just the traces that appear in Supreme Court decisions. Mark A. Graber both explores and offers original answers to such central questions as: What is a Constitution? What are fundamental constitutional purposes? How are constitutions interpreted? How is constitutional authority allocated? How do constitutions change? How is the Constitution of the United States influenced by international and comparative law? and, most important, How does the Constitution work? Relying on an historical/institutional perspective, the book illustrates how American constitutionalism is a distinct form …
Negotiating Colonialism And Chineseness: Museums, Tours, And Heritage Preservation In Pearl River Delta, Macau, And Hong Kong, Wing-Kai To
2013 New England Association for Asian Studies Conference
The history of Hong Kong, Macau, and the Pearl River Delta in connecting China with the world through European colonialism and globalization is a well-documented story. Yet the recent designations of the Historic Centre of Macau in 2005 and the Kaiping "diaolou" (fortified watched towers and mansions) in 2007 as World Cultural Heritage sites have further placed two Chinese outposts of western influence and overseas emigration into sharper focus. With the return of Hong Kong and Macau to Chinese sovereignty at the turn of the last century along with cultural change in the Pearl River Delta, museums, tourism, and heritage …

Wing-kai To taught history, culture, immigration, and ethnicity to graduate students and undergraduate students in the spring semester at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Hong Kong and in a …
The Lost Opportunity For Ethiopia: The Failure To Move Toward Democratic Governance, Theodor Vestal
The Lost Opportunity For Ethiopia: The Failure To Move Toward Democratic Governance, Theodor Vestal
International Journal of African Development
During the critical five year period leading up to the velvet revolution and the overthrow of Haile Selassie’s regime, there were missed opportunities to bring about peaceful change in Ethiopia’s governance. This paper analyzes the events of this period that led to the rise of the Derg and the revolutionary changes that followed and speculates on when strategic steps could have been taken to avoid the catastrophic events that ensued in 1974.
“The Diffusion Of Light”: Jefferson’S Philosophy Of Education, M. Andrew Holowchak
“The Diffusion Of Light”: Jefferson’S Philosophy Of Education, M. Andrew Holowchak
Democracy and Education
Jefferson's republicanism—a people-first, mostly bottom-up political vision with a moral underpinning—was critically dependent on general education for the citizenry and higher education for those who would govern. This paper contains an analysis of Jefferson’s general philosophy of pedagogy by enumerating some of its most fundamental principles, applicable to both elementary and higher education.

The Spirit Of Shu, Nathan Lewis
The Spirit Of Shu, Nathan Lewis
Nathan Lewis
"Yesterday, we unveiled the mural that Professor Nathan Lewis has been working on for about a year. It is currently on display in the gallery space at the Edgerton and, if you haven’t seen it, I recommend that you make a point to do so. It features images of more than 70 members of the SHU community—past and present—and truly lives up to its name, The Spirit of SHU. Nathan involved all members of the community as he decided what to include in the mural. As he said in his remarks yesterday, even if your image is not part of …
“A Case For History”, Magda Teter
“A Case For History”, Magda Teter
Magda Teter
With history evoked every week by politicians, often misusing and abusing history. What such misuses and abuses of history demonstrate is that our society needs more exposure to history. With STEMs championed by politicians and investors alike as the focus in national education, the humanities, including history, has been on the defensive. The humanities, some argue, are irrelevant, fiscally unjustifiable for their utility to society, and socially redundant. But without them outrageous and ignorant comments like those recently uttered by Sen. Cruz and Mr. Benmosche are frequently left unchallenged. They demonstrate clearly that history and the humanities are an essential …

Rave Reviews The History Of Akron's Tuesday Musical, Thomas Bacher, Cynthia Harrison, Sharon Cebula
University of Akron Press Publications
The Tuesday Musical Club was founded in 1887 by thirteen young Akron women who had an overwhelming desire to share their love of music. With further support of Gertrude Penfield Seiberling, the wife of industrialist Frank Seiberling, the organization grew like many other musical organizations across the country. Unlike similar clubs, the Akron-based entity continued to expand and is one of a very few that have survived. Among the artists who have appeared as a part of the rich history of Akron's Tuesday Musical Organization are Vladimir Horowitz, Artur Rubinstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Yascha Heifetz, Glenn Gould, Van Cliburn, Isaac Stern, …

Dr. Samuel Gross' contributions to the field of surgery are well known and range from numerous clinical advances to pioneering scholarship and professional activities. Dr. Gross was ceaselessly ambitious and even remarked in his autobiography that his ‘‘conviction has always been that is far better for a man to wear out than to rust out.’’1 It is through this frame of motivation that Dr. Gross lived his life.

An Assignment From Our Students: An Undergraduate View Of The Historical Profession, Edward L. Ayers
An Assignment From Our Students: An Undergraduate View Of The Historical Profession, Edward L. Ayers
History Faculty Publications
The students confidently measured the world through what they knew, and what they knew was popular culture. That culture, often electronic in one way or another, was more pervasive and powerful than anything else they had experienced, including school. The only history books most had seen were high school textbooks, books they universally detested. The students, not surprisingly, liked the idea that historical understanding arrives in many forms

The Qur'anic Jesus: A Study Of Parallels With Non-Biblical Texts, Brian C. Bradford
The Qur'anic Jesus: A Study Of Parallels With Non-Biblical Texts, Brian C. Bradford
Dissertations
This study examines which texts and religious communities existed that could well have contributed to Muhammad’s understanding of Jesus. The most important finding is that the Qur’anic verses mentioning Jesus’ birth, certain miracles, and his crucifixion bear close resemblance to sectarian texts dating as early as the second century. Accordingly, the idea that such verses from the Qur’an involving Jesus are original productions of the seventh century should be reconsidered.
The research covers a series of significant topics that support these findings. They include theological conflicts in third century Arabia; the interaction between Christian monks, Saracens, Arabs, and Ishmaelites; sectarian …
Dressing Indian: Appropriation, Identity, And American Design, 1940-1968, Alison Rose Bazylinski
Dressing Indian: Appropriation, Identity, And American Design, 1940-1968, Alison Rose Bazylinski
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis examines the ways the American fashion industry and fashion publications appropriated aspects of Indian cultures as marketing tools from 1940 to 1968 and the ways representations stereotypes created through fashion outlets denoted American and individual, rather than Native, identity. Representational stereotypes created at the turn of the twentieth century provided fashion merchandisers and sellers with a home-grown marketing scheme, while the development of an American fashion industry based on mass-produced, ready-to-wear sportswear led to nation-wide dissemination and use of "Indian" colors, patterns, and designs.
