Originality And Jones' The Grammar Of Ornament Of 1856, John Jespersen
Originality And Jones' The Grammar Of Ornament Of 1856, John Jespersen
Kresten Jespersen
Two years ago (2006) was the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones (18091874). This bible of ornament remains his best-known contribution to visual culture. This article looks at how the Grammar came about and also at its design intentions. The folio itself is really more famous for what it is than what it really is about. Jones' intention for ornamental designs of carpets, ceilings, wall elevations and fabrics was to create a field which was frequently conditioned by borders, panels or dados, cornices and covings. The field's ornaments consist of secondary motifsdots, fragments, elements, …

Marking Time In The Barry Mckenzie Films' Music, Rebecca Coyle, Michael Hannan
Dr Rebecca Coyle
This article examines aspects of the music of the Barry McKenzie films directed by Bruce Beresford (The adventures of Barry McKenzie, 1972, and Barry McKenzie holds his own, 1974), with particular regard to the ways in which the music places the films in a set of historical contexts. First, the music composed by former advertising songwriter Peter Best, reflects a particular approach to film music associated with the revival of the Australian film industry. Second, performance numbers in each film can be heard in the context of collections of sea shanties and bush ballads. The bawdy nature of the songs …
Radio Norfolk: Community And Communication On Norfolk Island, Rebecca Coyle
Radio Norfolk: Community And Communication On Norfolk Island, Rebecca Coyle
Dr Rebecca Coyle
IntroductionMy interest and research into the radio service on Norfolk Island commenced with a three-month residency in 1999.[1] Both my research and my experiences on the island brought to mind the contradictions and tensions between public and private, as well as between global and local, which seemed significant then and still affect island identities today. These aspects pertain to the radio service on the island insofar as Radio Norfolk is both a highly localised service while at the same time a conduit for broadcasts from elsewhere, some of which represent Norfolk Island back to itself through news coverage of island …

BACKGROUND: Concern has been growing in the academic literature and popular media about the licensing, introduction and adoption of surgical devices before full effectiveness and safety evidence is available to inform clinical practice. Our research will seek empirical survey evidence about the roles, responsibilities, and information and policy needs of the key stakeholders in the introduction into clinical practice of new surgical devices for pelvic floor surgery, in terms of the underlying ethical principals involved in the economic decision-making process, using the example of pelvic floor procedures.
METHODS/DESIGN: Our study involves three linked case studies using, as examples, selected pelvic …

Political Will, Local Union Transformation, And The Organizing Imperative, Bill Fletcher, Richard Hurd
Richard W Hurd
[Excerpt] As part of its ongoing commitment, SEIU has devoted increasing attention to the challenge of getting local unions to embrace organizing and to allocate sufficient resources to the task. In this context, the unions 1992 national convention adopted two key resolutions: one to affirm the centrality of organizing, the second to assist leadership development with targeted educational programs. In the months following the convention, a discussion unfolded among national staff regarding appropriate steps required to assist local union leaders committed to change. Although internal organizing and initiatives to develop leadership skills among women and people of color were encouraged, …

Basking Behavior Of Emydid Turtles (Chysemys Picta Marginata, Graptemys Geographica, And Trachemys Scripta Elegans) In An Urban Landscape, W. Peterman, Travis Ryan
Travis J. Ryan
Basking is common in emydid turtles and is generally accepted to be in thermoregulatory behavior. In 2004, we quantified and described the basking behavior of turtles in the Central Canal of Indianapolis. This canal system runs through an urban landscape that is dominated by fragmented woodlots, residential areas. and commercial areas. We observed that basking turtles exhibited variable basking behavior. with spatial and temporal shins in basking behavior from east-facing banks in the morning to west-facing banks in the afternoon. Turtles in the Central Canal are subject to frequent disturbance, which altered basking behavior. Many turtles forewent aerial basking on …
