Measurement of total attenuation in transition metal doped crystals is still an opened field and needs further research and development. In this investigation we developed a method for measurement of passive losses in Cr2+:ZnSe and Cr2+:ZnS laser crystals using polarized laser beam. A method for loss measurement, the Transmission Comparison Method, has been taken into consideration and modified to quantify the sample loss which in our case is larger than the extremely small loss measured in the Transmission Comparison Method. Parenting Practices As Mediators Of The Association Between Violence Exposure And Internalizing And Externalizing Behavior Problems Among Black Youth, Penny Loosier

“Tough love” has been posited as a prevalent parenting style among black families; although most of the literature has focused on differences in parenting across black and white youth, examinations of parenting within an exclusively black sample are rare. The current study used an exclusively black sample to examine a blend of parenting practices aligning with a “tough love” conceptualization of parenting: child disclosure (CD), parental nurturance (PN), and harsh discipline (HD). Given prior evidence that it might be an adaptation to compromised environments, it was hypothesized that, if viable, “tough love” would present via positive associations between violence exposure …

Due to its physical and electrical properties, silicon carbide (SiC) has attracted much attention recently for its possible applications in high power devices. Point defects and the associated defect levels are important to understand if we are to produce high quality SiC wafers. While a lot has been done to understand point defects using electrical measurements, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) reveals more detailed information. EPR gives us both the number of defects and also their specific structure and charge state while photo-EPR helps to determine their defect level. Mental health courts have been established to help meet the treatment needs of the mentally ill offender. If mentally ill offenders commit crimes because of their mental illness, then “by treating [them], society may benefit through reduced recidivism and improvements in social outcomes” (Mears, 2004, 258). This study focuses on the Jefferson County Mental Health Court and its participants. Young adult fiction may not portray obese characters accurately. Research questions used to explore this issue focused on how obese characters were portrayed in young adult fiction. One set of questions asked whether characters in the books in this study will suffer from ridicule and peer rejection. A second set of questions asked whether any the books in this study will suggest that losing weight will ensure personal happiness. The modern origins of intentionality reside in the early work of Franz Brentano—specifically, his Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint (1876) and the notion of the “intentional inexistence” of the object of consciousness presented therein. “Intentional inexistence”, says Brentano, is the fundamental distinguishing characteristic of the objects that occupy our desires, aversions, thoughts, and all of our conscious activities in general. The major purpose of this research paper was to document in a written form the history of the Iowa Teen Award (ITA). This purpose was accomplished through interviews and examination of IEMA Archival materials located in the University of Northern Iowa Rod Library Archives Collection.

The results of this study showed a dedicated group of school librarians who organized a state-wide plan for a book award chosen by students in grades six through nine. Over a five-year period, plans were made for the award to be similar to the Iowa Children's Choice Award. The study presented the growth and development …

The purpose of this thesis is to look at the potential for interactive devices to enhance the story of future theme park attractions. The most common interactive theme park rides are about game-based interaction, competition, and scoring, rather than about story, character, and plot. Research into cognitive science, interactivity, narrative, immersion, user interface, theming and other fields of study illuminated some potentially useful guidelines for creating compelling experiences for park guests. Gutter King had a threefold purpose: to create a feature film using limited resources, to make the film bridge the gap between a defined artistic aesthetic and its broader distribution goals, and to make the film entertaining to its target market of 14-24 year old males. The methods used: exploiting new digital technology, using a limited workforce (crew), and implementing a planned improvisational structure.
